Re: Shutting this down
Came back today to check on some things after a couple months to another 400+ messages in the spam moderation queue. Doesn't appear we can stay ahead of this with the moderators we've got (and I added more after starting this thread). I plan to close new registrations effective immediately and will ...

Sorry for the recent outage. My hosting provider had to take my site offline due to it being under extreme load (looks like it was being DOSed or something). Hopefully a temporary issue....

Shutting this down
Hey all, after logging in today for the first time in awhile and seeing over 10,000 spam posts awaiting moderation and seeing very little in the way of new posts lately, it's got me thinking long and hard about whether it's worth keeping this site alive anymore. I'm strongly considering making every...

POSReady wasn't a hack, though, it was an actual XP-based release Microsoft created for embedded systems.

Probably worth noting that the "Some bugs were fixed." note is in reference to some security issues that were found and reported to them.

Re: MSFN Is going to be closed on 12 August
Thanks everyone for the support. When I started this forum way back in the day, I never would have guessed that this site would still be going all these years later. I'm really happy to see that you all find so much value in it and it really makes me happy to see people willing to help keep it runni...

Re: MSFN Is going to be closed on 12 August
Well that sucks. Times they are a changin' :( In case anybody's wondering about the status of this site in light of XPer's news, here's a blunt assessment of things. It generates literally no money, but it also basically costs nothing besides time to keep running. I use my hosting for other things a...

hrm, the change appears to have done something as we've definitely seen *some* new posts waiting on moderator approval since that change went into effect.

Re: Ridiculous Amount of SPAM Lately
I was really hoping that moving to phpbb3 + recaptcha2 would be enough to avoid what I was doing prior to upgrading - that is, requiring admin activation of all new accounts. Sadly, that doesn't seem to be working out like I'd hoped. Also annoying is that I haven't found the option to have the board...

Re: The BIGFOOT/Firefox connection!!!
<snip> Thanks, nothing horribly obvious stands out there. I've been talking to one of the engineers who focuses on perf and responsiveness and they'd be willing to look at a profile if you're willing to collect one when Firefox is being sluggish/laggy. If you're willing to do so, grab the Gecko Pro...

Re: The BIGFOOT/Firefox connection!!!
Ok, This Force-enable was NOT present in my DEV-version ... I did add it, just to make sure I copy pasted correct ... I added "browser.tabs.remote.force-enable" then set it to "True". It is NOW present and I can't say I see an improvement, cant say I DON'T see one either. Is there a way to check. M...

Re: The BIGFOOT/Firefox connection!!!
Thanks for the update. If you're interested in providing more feedback on Firefox 52 before it goes to ESR (and the bar becomes much higher for fixing anything other than security or stability issues), you can try out a current DevEdition build which is currently tracking 52. Otherwise, it'll go to ...

Re: Recent site security upgrade
I've installed two new themes that are compatible with 3.2.0 (not a lot to choose from, so they'll have to do for now) - Cynthia and Lucid Lime. I've set Lucid Lime as the new board default for now.

Re: Recent site security upgrade
I just updated to phpBB 3.2.0 and naturally it broke the theme we were using (well, it was somewhat-usable but broken enough to be annoying). I've reverted back to the default style for now, but I can assure you that I'll try to get something less fugly installed as soon as possible.

Re: The BIGFOOT/Firefox connection!!!
If you don't already have Electrolysis enabled (multi-process), you can try forcing that on too, which may help for responsiveness. Mozilla is doing a staged roll-out of it, so not all users are getting it enabled by default yet. If you want to try it out, you can go to about:config and set browser....

Re: AV & Browser for XP SP4
FWIW, Mozilla's dropping support for XP in Firefox 53 (and moving XP users over to ESR52 for the next year). But at this point, Firefox is the only game in town for a modern web browser that supports XP and still gets security updates.

Re: Recent site security upgrade
Yeah, I picked the Digi theme specifically because it was the closest out-of-the-box theme I could find that resembled the old one. I thought I had it properly set as the default one, though. Guess not :( TBH, I don't have the time to try to build a theme that matches the old one more closely. If so...

Noticing a couple things since this update. First, the pages never stop loading--need to stop loading the page in order to refresh it (unless you use F5). And secondly, the number of "guest" visitors is consistently about half of what we usually get. We used to have between 15 and 35 guests at any ...

I recently enabled HTTPS support for this site, thanks to LetsEncrypt. From all the testing I've done, everything should Just Work at this point, but feel free to comment here if you run into anything odd.

bphlpt nailed it on the head - incredibly vague all-around (one URL that's "just one example") and very limited space to "make a strong case". Due to various links that were deemed "infringing" in the "ELiTE's Apps" forum, Google pulled Adsense from my site. As most of you know, while the Adsense revenue generated by this site is fairly small, it is what pays the hosting bills. So I've removed ELiTE's Apps from the site and am now appealin...
