Are you talking about XP? Ya if you use a new update pack you have to start from scratch. Best thing to do is to just to make backups of a clean source you can use.

I've found that Installing the latest IE8 update, and THEN searching, will allow the search to finish within a minute or two. Search for "Internet Explorer" on the Microsoft Update Catalog , order by "Last Updated", then Ctrl+F to find "POSReady" to find and download the latest IE8 update. People w...

People who experience high SVCHOST issue, and windows update hanging for hours, It's because you have Office 2007 or Office 2003 Compatibility pack installed. It's well know and MS will not fix it. I see no value in patching windows for vulnerabilities if the system isn't connected to the internet and thus isn't vulnerable.
