Idea for Future Update Pack(s)

nice work on the update pack. I think that since most of us use/slipstream WMP10, and a TCPIP.SYS hack, it would be really cool if you could release a version without the WMP9 updates along with the loopback update.

Also, can you please include KB888111 - Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) High Definition Audio class driver version 1.0a

Well if you do make sure you do not include the Mssap.dll and Portcls.sys from it as they are old.

Like Mssap.dll is version 9.0.0.3140 yet I have 9.0.0.3250 on my system.

Portcls.sys is 5.1.2600.1364 and I have 5.1.2600.2180. So this one came with sp2.

I'm not putting hacked files in my pack anymore. They're available as seperate downloads from my site if you want them.

If I do end up making a WMP9-less version, it won't be for at least a month. Maintaining three packs is already a pain

. And I'll probably just do a full WMP10 version instead

(but don't hold off on your next format waiting for it, because you could be waiting for awhile

)

EDIT: And KB888111 will be coming eventually. I've had it on my hard drive for awhile, but I have to decide how I'm going to integrate it first (since it's got a bunch of new files). And that requires time to test it, which I REALLY don't have right now (I have finals in a week).

i didnt say anything about including hacked files. i just said that a bunch of us are using the hacked TCPIP.sys file and there are problems using your update pack because it has the loopback and kb885267 and any other tcpip fixes. it would be really cool if you could release a tcpip.sys that is the latest version already so that those hotfixes wouldn't be needed.

nevermind that post. i just noticed that the tcpip in the loopback fix is the same as the tcpip in the kb885267 version.

Instead of a light, medium and full pack, maybe you can make a pack with just the hotixes, and a pack with all the updates (like mp10, ...)

I use the Dutch Post SP2 Pack. Added Highmat CD Wizard to it. Integrated MP10 (with cat files). Dot Net Framework, Journal Viewer, Media connect are called from svcpack.inf

Now Windows Update completely hits zero after installing my XP CD.

If you look closely, the light pack contains pretty much nothing but the hotfixes (plus the reg tweaks).

@ryanVM:
I noticed there is very little difference between the medium and full packs (only 200k) so I would suggest 'retiring' the medium pack after the next update.

Also, i haven't dug around your installation files (i don't touch what works well already), but if you don't already do this, then try to make it modular, with plenty of comments, so users can comment out parts of the ini to limit what gets installed.

as Meulc suggests, create a separate pack with the 'Extras' you include such as:

- pretty much everything that isn't a Hotfix, really.
Again make the pack modular so commenting out things in the ini leaves it off the installation.
Add instructions on how to install these along with the Hotfix pack (can you just rar the extras pack into a folder within the hotfix pack, for example) and then you just have 2 packs to update - a hotfix one and an 'Extras' one.

Believe me, I've thought about doing something. But yeah, that would make things more complicated as it would then require a second INF and such. Forcing people to edit INFs is moving in exactly the opposite direction that I want to go.

If Microsoft ask you to completely bloat your computer with useless stuff through their Windows Update site your happy with that

afaik nobody uses the highmat cd wizard, so I removed it from the Dutch pack. As long the Automatic Updates Service doesn't complain about Aditional updates, I will not include that stuff in Dutch pack.

Please also note the HIGHMAT CD Wizard update is available as a seperate download and can get installed unattendedly.

Personally if I don't like the extras, I would take em out, its not too much trouble. The only extra I really don't like is the COPY TO context menu thing, and that I DO take out.

What really needs to be remembered here is that RyanVM is basically doing these packs for himself, and being kind enough to share with us, and even more shocking, he actually will concede to us over his own wishes sometimes . I really don't wanna push my luck too much and ask him to completely re-think his pack.

It's just that most people i know, just perform a standard install of XP, go to Windows Update and install all of it. So i also try to make a CD with all the items showed in WU.

Alot of his extra's are either very small or small and useful. It only adds about 3 mb to the xp install.

You're going to have to live with installing those other files through a standard unattended install, which I assume you're capable of if you're downloading files from my site in the first place.

There are only 3 programs I have to install unattended: Media Connect, Journal Viewer and Net Framework... All the rest is included in your Update Pack.
