New update pack causes one regtweaks to stop wroking

Post by glent » Sat Jan 28, 2006 2:19 pm

Since upgrading to the 2.02a Pack this Regtweak no longer works

Code: Select all

;Adds Device Manager to right click of MY Computer
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\DevMgr]
@="Device Manager"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\DevMgr\command]
@="mmc.exe %%SYSTEMDRIVE%%\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM32\\devmgmt.msc"

It a adds a shortcut to device manager when you right click on my computer

Heres is the error I get now
Image

This number may have changed with the updated mmc:

Code: Select all

{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

If you do Start...Run "%systemroot%\system32\devmgmt.msc", does that work?

Try changing

Code: Select all

@="mmc.exe %%SYSTEMDRIVE%%\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM32\\devmgmt.msc"
to

Code: Select all

@="mmc.exe %%systemroot%%\\system32\\devmgmt.msc"
and see what happens.

@ryan, there both the same, the reason his reg file aint working is because only the \\ symbol must be repeated not the %% as well in other words change

Code: Select all

@="mmc.exe %%SYSTEMDRIVE%%\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM32\\devmgmt.msc"
to this

Code: Select all

@="mmc.exe %SYSTEMDRIVE%\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM32\\devmgmt.msc"
or this

Code: Select all

@="mmc.exe %systemroot%\\system32\\devmgmt.msc"
either one of the final two will work it makes no difference.
@glent, a simple addon with that reg tweak in inf, would be much simpler :)

here use this instead, you may want to consider converting all your reg tweaks to inf format, or you may not either way its up to you

I also noticed that it appears you've got an XPize GUI. You're not using XPize 4.2 MCE Beta, are you? RyanVM said that XPize 4.2 MCE Beta affects the MMC adversely when integrated with his 2.0.2a pack.

You do realize Device Manager is only a couple clicks from My Computer -> Properties, right?

Hi,

I had the exact same problem the other day. Try this:

Code: Select all

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\DevMgr]
@="Device Manager"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\DevMgr\command]
@=hex(2):25,00,77,00,69,00,6e,00,64,00,69,00,72,00,25,00,5c,00,53,00,59,\ 00,53,00,54,00,45,00,4d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,6d,00,6d,00,63,00,2e,00,65,00,\
78,00,65,00,20,00,25,00,77,00,69,00,6e,00,64,00,69,00,72,00,25,00,5c,00,53,\
00,59,00,53,00,54,00,45,00,4d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,64,00,65,00,76,00,6d,00,\
 67,00,6d,00,74,00,2e,00,6d,00,73,00,63,00,00,00
I found that if the string value is replaced with an expandable string value then everything works. I believe the need for the REG_EXPAND_SZ derives from the use of an environment variable in the path. If the path uses a hard coded drive letter then the exisitng REG_SZ value can be used. Of course, using an expandable string value means that you need to use hex values, but I've copied it above. It is the equivalent of:

Code: Select all

%windir%\SYSTEM32\mmc.exe %windir%\SYSTEM32\devmgmt.msc

Andy

Hmmmm. Strange as it's working for me and I had the exact same issue as outlined above. Maybe I pasted it wrong?...

Try creating:

Code: Select all

%windir%\SYSTEM32\mmc.exe %windir%\SYSTEM32\devmgmt.msc
As a REG_EXPAND_SZ value and then exporting. Does your .reg file match mine?

NOTE: If you don't precisely add this .reg file to the registry (i.e. you try to create a new key and REG_EXPAND_SZ value manually) then this might not work. By default when you create a new key a "Default" REG_SZ value is created. The presence of this will stop the fix working. The only way to make this work in my experience is to create a reg file with the exact contents above and use REGEDIT /S to import it. This will only create the REG_EXPAND_SZ value and not the "Default" REG_SZ also.

Cheers,

Andy

That's what happens to me when I get to fooling with the registry after a while, it gets corrupted to where you see those messages, trying using the new code in a fresh installation and see if that cures it, it usually does for me. ;)

If that's not your problem, then sorry for my posting this. :?

Hey guys i fixed the problem. That addon didnt work for me. But this did. Have a try to see if it works.

Whatever you had before. Change it to this.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

;----- Adds Device Manager to right click of MY Computer
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\DevMgr]
@="Device Manager"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\DevMgr\command]
@="mmc.exe C:\\Windows\\system32\\devmgmt.msc"

I think the problem was the that it couldn't find it with the coding, but this works flawlessly.
