OMG... I'm currently testing my install source, and checked for an update of your pack half an hour ago... I refresh and see I have to rebuild. LOL

LOL.... well, looks like I'll be your first tester... I'm testing tonight anyhow.

Holy crap, you made the Full and Lite already?? Since when did you have free time? Get back to work... :-P

I think I figured out your method for adding new updates to your INFs and such, and was working on putting new updates into it for my own use, and after doing so GUI install wouldn't start (would reboot, then restart setup, reboot, restart setup, etc). Finally found out that it was because I was using Basrat (or whoever) driverpacks after using nLite. One thing that does puzzle me though (I couldn't find it last night anyhow), where do you actually define %10%, %11%, and %1033%?

Those are system variables.

And I make the Full and Lite packs simultaneously.

And my exams are done, so I've got freetime now :D

I've used Manual Installs up until now. I decided to download Nlite and see what the hype is about. Is it safe to do manual install with NLite, or is there something specific I would need to change. I've had up to 1.03 so far.

If you do a manual install, do it after running nLite. The only word of caution I'll give you is that if you remove components that are hotfixed, qfecheck might be angry about it.

Of course, if you're going to play with nLite, you can just start fresh and integrate 1.0.4 during the wizard.

How about adding MD5 sums for Update Pack? It would be safer... :)

Just created a new CD image with your 1.0.4 update and a few batch command files I made to install Media Player 10 and the other stuff in the optional update. Installed it on a Pentium 4 2.4 GHz., 512 mb test machine, and it went through with no problems.

Thanks for your great work Ryan. I know how those tests can be. I'm in grad school now and I'm teaching a freshman class. Taking tests and giving tests in the same week hurts. Hope you did well.

I suppose I could, but I'm not that worried about my server being compromised :P
Well, I was thinking at the possibility of a corrupted download. And then there would be some problems, I suppose. Isn't it possible? :)

When you right click the catalog file included with the update you can get the build date of the file.

I'm now on a test run with the Update Pack dutch.

All updates are now included except the following:

uxtheme.dll hack
sfc_os.dll hack
wholockme
Microsoft OpenType Font Properties Extension 2.1
Microsoft Calculator Plus

except the hack-files these additions are English only. If people want to add these software additions they can install them seperately.

About your mydoom update showing up, I can't find it on Windows Update?

Meaby it's about blastcln.exe that is not removed. I remove it with nLite

Fell free to start a post over in the in the translations section for your translation.

The MyDoom thing has nothing to do with blastcln.exe. It's a different file called doomcln.exe. KB836528

It's weird that it's not showing up for you. Maybe it's a US thing?

FULL: Added Copy To/Send To context menu option DLL
Ryan, this file is english only and Í don't know why to add this thing.

When using the following reg tweaks I never have problems using 'copy to' and 'move to':

Code: Select all

;Add Copy To to right click menu
;[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers]
;[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Copy To]
;@="{C2FBB630-2971-11D1-A18C-00C04FD75D13}"

;Add Move To to right click menu
;[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Move To]
;@="{C2FBB631-2971-11D1-A18C-00C04FD75D13}"
BTW, can I post a link on your website to the Dutch pack or my website?

Absolutely. I even made a forum just for pack translations for you guys :)

Regarding CopyTo/SendTo, there are issues with the registry tweak which have been discussed over at MSFN on multiple occasions. The DLL works in all situations.

Now that you bring it up, 1.0.3 Lite was in a bit of a weird position. There was some stuff in 1.0.1 Lite that was causing problems for international users, so I had to go back and do some things differently. That's the short answer, which is all I feel like giving right now :P

Regarding the MyDoom tool: I figured out a way that works. As some of you are aware of, blastcln.exe is already on the XP CD. Also, you can see on a fresh install that at some point during XP setup, blastcln.exe is run. The evidence for that is a log file in c:\windows\debug named blastcln.log. I also noticed when running doomcln.exe that a doomcln.log was also created in the same directory. This got the gears spinning in my head. So I tried renaming doomcln.exe to blastcln.exe and compressed it and put it in i386. And (not) to my surprise, it worked! doomcln.log was present and WindowsUpdate no longer wants to install. So for the next release, that's what I'll be doing unless someone can find a better solution.

Update pack 1.04 problem

Post by Roy » Fri Dec 17, 2004 2:20 pm

I've just installed the update pack 1.04 using nLite 0.99.5.
After installing windows I run the qfecheck utility and it says that the KB883523 hot fix should be reinstalled.
What could be wrong?

Ryan:
Saw your main post. Is it the execution of the .exe that causes the system to not want to download the critical update, or is it the log files that something checks to see if it is there? I'm guessing some registry keys are created, the log file, and some other things. I'm gonna try a few experiments and see if anything I can do will make something happen, so we don't have to rename the file.

Right now, I have the Microsoft KB file execute in a batch file that installs all the other stuff when Windows comes up for the first time. That's the way I'm getting around it now. But I definately agree with you, there's gotta be a better way to do it. I'll see if I can do anything, but I'm not a CS student, so any code I look at will be interesting. But I'll see what I can do to help.

I'm probably going to integrate the WMP10 version into the update pack. I've got someone doing some tests right now for me with WMP9 and the WMP10 hotfixed file. Initial reports are that things work fine, and that would solve the issue.

For the mean time, you could probably just get away with deleting the existing registry entries for KB887078.

Hiya Ryan,
Just a quickie here - with that new update for XPSP2 - KB885222, is there any plans for a new release of the update pack? Or would you rather that there be more worthy patches before a new update?

If you'd like to wait, then I need to know - so I can do the newest update in the normal svcpack.

Congrats with the board. :D

I'd hardly consider an update for firewire to be signficant enough to warrant a new release.

Yeah, to me it's a big waste of bandwidth to make a new release (especially following so close to the last one) for one hotfix that most people aren't even affected by.

To give you all some perspective, I've had over 400 downloads of 1.0.4 (Full & Lite) already since releasing it on Wednesday. I had well over 1000 downloads of 1.0.3 before releasing 1.0.4.

If you are really itching to add the new hotfix, you can always use /integrate (though I hate that personally) or keytotime made a (now locked) thread for KB885222.

Well, you're the first person to have an issue with it, and 1.0.4 has been downloaded well over 1000 times, so I'm betting the issue is on your end. I haven't ever had an instance where a mistake I made caused a lockup at T9 (unlike the framedyn error which I accidently did once myself :P), so I don't have a clue where to even start looking. Did you download the correct sysoc.inf?

Then it shouldn't be misbehaving. I just built a new ISO with the Lite pack integrated and am testing it in VirtualPC. We'll see what happens.

I've just built a new ISO again and retested it with VMWare. Still the same problem. Everything else is fine.
I read that this hotfix is due to a problem XP SP2 has with some CD-RW units. I dont have a CD-RW unit installed in my PC. Could that have something to do with that?
Ok, Ryan. I'll wait for you to test your new ISO.
Thanks.

Look in your system32\drivers folder and tell me if imapi.sys is in there and if so, what the version number for it is.

I built a new ISO with the Lite pack and it worked fine for me in VirtualPC (which also doesn't support CD writers). I extracted it directly from the same CAB file that everybody else would use if they downloaded it from me.

Yes, the version is 5.1.2600.2180. By the way, I use the full pack.

It should be 5.1.2600.2505. imapi.sy_ is included in the 1.0.4 full download, so something must be wrong on your end. Try extracting it manually into i386 and see what happens.

The imapi.sys I checked was in the windows\system32\drivers folder of my installed windows. Now, when I went to the i386 folder of my XPCD I found out that the imapi.sy_ was the same that comes with the 1.0.4.
The MD5 hash for that file (imapi.sy_) is

I don't understand why for you it appears to be copying the file from driver.cab while for everybody else (myself included), it copies from i386. I'm betting if you had nLite remove the duplicate files from driver.cab, the error would go away.

I don't know where in the hell it is copying that file from because I've searched the entire ISO and the only IMAPI.SY_ is located inside the i386 folder. I did this, after installing I manually renemed and copied the imapi.sy_ that came with your pack to the system32/drivers folder and overwrote the one with the version 5.1.2600.2180. Run qfecheck and everything ok.
I'll then put it inside the \$OEM$\$$\System32\drivers folder so when it finish the installation the file will be automatic copied to its destination.
I'm going to test it now to see if it works.
If you have a better idea please let me know.

The other copy of imapi.sys is in driver.cab

And please stop using bold on all your posts. It's kind of annoying.

I've finally found where is the other copy of imapi.sys. It is located inside i386\sp2.cab. Should I remove the file sp2.cab or update the imapi.sys located inside it with the one from the update pack?

PD: Sorry about the bold.
