Windows XP with Ryan Pack 2.12 problem

Post by reignfire » Tue Oct 17, 2006 3:54 am

I have created a Windows XP cd with SP2 and ryan pack 2.12, all works fine, but with this months released SecurityPatches something goes wrong, i have determined that when installing KB924496 on a system installed with the previously mentioned CD, everything works except that it is not possible to open a link in a new window with Internet Explorer. It opens and closes imidiatly. The same happens when i click in Messenger on my Inbox, it tries to open IE but closes immidiatly.

Has anyone seen this problem and nows maybe to solve this ???

Kind regards,

Reignfire

If I had to wager a guess, I'd bet on bad registry entries. Try unregistering and re-registering shdocvw.dll.

Code: Select all

regsvr32 /u shdocvw.dll

Code: Select all

regsvr32 shdocvw.dll

For what it's worth, I just did a fresh install in VirtualPC with 2.1.2a integrated and first verified that I could open links in new windows OK in IE. I think went to MU and installed all the October updates and restarted. I opened IE and I can still open links in new windows (right click...Open in New Window). Am I missing something?

I can confirm that I have this exact same problem. Only cropped up a few days ago. Basically, I open up an IE window to any website, right-click on a link, select "Open in New Window". A new window opens up, stays open very briefly (less than a second or so), then immediately closes. :(

I'm not entirely sure of the cause, though your mention of a specific hotfix maybe helpful to me in eliminating the cause of the problem. (At first, I thought it was OneCare 1.5 beta that did it. I had to uninstall it due to firewall-related problems)

@RyanVM: I have tried all the online fixes I could find regarding this (most involved unregistering and reregistering certain DLLs), and none of the fixes solved my problem. I don't think I've tried your exact method, so I'll give it a go, and report back.

Just tried the suggestion you mentioned. Unfortunately, didn't work :(

It's not a major problem for me personally. Merely a minor annoyance, but still... a fix for the problem would be nice, if it could be found. :)

Just decided to try another experiment with this:

Since I got KB924496 through MU (not integrated via the Pack), I decided to uninstall it. After the required reboot, the problem disappeared.

I reinstalled the same hotfix again. The problem comes back.

Ah well...

I wonder why the Update Pack v2.1.3 has no problems with this update. I'm running a fresh install of everything on my computer and I can't get this problem to resurface.

And as my last post indicated, I think it's more complicated than just 2.1.2 being to blame, since I did that test in VirtualPC and had no issues opening links in new windows. You guys might want to start seeing if your installs have something else in common.

reignfire, Why not update to the latest update pack?

I have many friends using the 2.1.3 version and have no problems.

Just for the record, installing IE7 final solved the problem. Which I found interesting, as a comparison of the shdocvw.dll in IE7final and the hotfix held identical version numbers.

This leads me to think that Ryan's idea of some screwy registry setting or similar was to blame. Anyway, at least the problem is resolved for me, so I'm happier than I was before :)

Now, I think I'll just build a new CD with the latest pack and be done with it. :)

I had the same problem and did not want to install IE7 now.

I found out that KB924496 replaced shdocvw.dll with another version as the ohter *.dlls of IE6.

In my case KB924496 installed version 6.00.2900.2987 (xpsp_sp2_gdr.060901-0121) of shdocvw.dll (the SP2GDR version of this file) while the other IE6 *.dlls for example mshtml.dll has the version 6.00.2900.2963 (xpsp.060728-0003) which is the SP2QFE Version of this file.

To solve the problem I had to extrac KB924496.exe and replace %SystemRoot%\system32\shdocvw.dll with the SP2QFE version from the patch.

This solved all the "open and close IE window immidiatly" on my PCs
