Suggestion: Add KB893357

Post by jcarle » Sun Dec 31, 2006 5:57 pm

I noticed that KB893357 is not included in the update pack. Just a suggestion, I think it would quite useful to add this one into it, especially considering most people (including myself until this week) don't even know it exists.

For a long time, I could never figure out why the Windows Wireless Management could not connect to a WPA2 network... until I found out about KB893357. It updates the wireless components of Windows XP and makes XP WPA2 aware. Why Microsoft hasn't included that in the list of critical updates for Windows Update is beyond me.

The original KB article is located here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893357

And the download link is:

Thanks...

You know, Microsoft can make things so frustrating sometimes. I can download KB893357 in ENU/FRA from the download center, but KB923154 is listed as "To resolve this problem, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the hotfix."... why?

I'm guessing that most consumers wouldn't have much need for EAP, but it would be nice to have if you bring your own machine into a corporate environment that uses that protocol.

in my chinese update pack i uses KB893357, because i can't get a KB923154 in chinese, as there is a file "netshell.dll" containing language resources in KB923154.

however, if an unofficical hotfix doesn't include such file(s), i use it.

just my opinion. :)

Actually all of these updates have been superceded by KB917021. THIS should be added to the update pack instead... so those who run XP on their laptop can use WPA2 right off the install.

Actually, dougm, if you check the latest RyanVM Update Pack then you'll see that KB923154 still supersedes KB917021-v3. The build dates of the former are four days newer than those of tha latter. ;)

Ugh...so why doesn't MS update their older KB pages accordingly? My skin crawls when I think of how many out-of-date files we have deployed, when there are really better ones out there under the name of a completely different hotfix... :?
