Just to be clear on Ryan-created Packs vs other Addon Packs.

Post by newsposter » Tue Oct 11, 2005 1:25 am

Ok...

If I understand the 'future direction' correctly:

Ryan intends to concentrate on the development and release of Update Packs which contain Microsoft components only and leave the creation of other Add-on Packs to the user base.

I'm asking because of the flurry of recently released Add-on Packs, many of whom conflict with non-MS components that Ryan includes in his Packs.

Yes ryan has been considering dropping the addons packs and letting us take care of it. As for conflicts so far none of the packs created will directly conflict ryans addon packs (Just look at it as an update to ryans pack). And as for the ones that have the same components they are made for end-user choice.

Basically this is something we are gonna have to play by ear. There are certain things that we will have to look out for in each pack made. If 2 packs have some simular peices of code in them they can mess each other up. I am going to continue making the integrator better as we go along and try my best to make sure that it will be able to prevent that from happening. But that will just be something that will come in time. Soon Ryan and some of the others will begin posting tutorials and they will tell the dos and don'ts.

It would be nice to have a definitive statement though. If Ryan comitts to packaging up only MS-released 'KB' type patches for XP and the WMPxx add-on pack, everyone elses energies could be concentrated on the other packs.
