can i manually replace xp sounds?
can i manually replace xp sounds?
i'd like to replace the default .wav files in xp with my own custom sounds. so this is what i've figured out is:
first i rename all my sound files to match those that windows uses.
then i make a cab file of them by this command MAKECAB FILENAME.WAV
which results in the file as cab with FILENAME.WA_
after that i just copy the cab files i have made and paste inside the i386 folder of my xp build and overwrite the originals when asked.
is there any problems with doing it this way?

ok this is what i've found so far. i'm sure there are other methods of doing this:
open up notepad and make a file with this:
@echo Off
title MakeCab all file in current directory
FOR %%L IN (*.*) DO makecab %%L /L ".\Cab"
exit
save the file as createcabs.cmd
place createcabs.cmd in the directory where you have your files located. double click on the createcabs.cmd and it should run a batch process and place the cabbed files in a folder named cab.
however, also in the cab folder is a "createcabs.cm_" file. i'm unsure what that file is or what it's importance is (or if i can just delete it)

probably for the same reason when people post how to do things with rvm that nlite can already do much faster and easier.
anyway, Wesmosis i used the vista sounds from this http://oddbasket.deviantart.com/art/XP- ... k-47056403
i tried testing out quite a few different ones and i found these to sound the best. some of those vista sound packs sound downright awful.
?? i dont understand what you mean.ccl0 wrote:bober101 wrote:well there are a couple of xp sound replacement addons, why not simply take those?

1- dl a specific sound replacement addon
2- unpack it and take the sound files

simple:
a. i dont have to depend on the work of someone else.
b. i wanted to use the vista sounds that *I* wanted to use, not someone else's selection. not all those vista sound packs are equal. some are really bad. the one i found was the best in my opinion.
c. why re-invent the wheel when my method i outlined takes all of a max of ~maybe~ 10 seconds for me. if my methods works AND i am happy with it, then why go through the trouble of finding some addon, testing to see if the sounds are as accurate/clear as the ones i originally am using. all of that takes extra time, when all i do now is copy over my files to i386 in .5 seconds and be done with it
oh and also it just gives people other options about how to do things
i just thought you were looking for the wave files so i simply gave my opinion(how to look for and get them from a pack, i never intented you to use the addon but only the files in it.)and btw work of others also includes:

ok if you say so. all the other i had seen either used the vista sounds with the low volume(which sucked), or the ones with the artificially increased volume(which only resulted in distorted sounds). also none of the addons set the vista sounds to default. how i did it worked for me and got the results *I* wanted. if you want to do it differently, go right ahead. you can create your own topic and post the methods that you used.bober101 wrote:and btw work of others also includes:

i am not going to argue about this back and forth because it seems rather silly to be honest.
if you have nothing else to contribute to my thread other than 'why didnt you do it this way instead of that way?' comments, then please just dont post anything at all.
