Is ryan working on update packs again?

Post by jdub » Wed Sep 09, 2009 2:26 am

Not asking for a release date, just wondering if its in the works. I have 2 xp installs I need to worry about in the next few weeks.

Failing a ryanVM one, how close is redxii's pack to ryans in style of integration? I had a friend who said his install was a little wonky using either redxii's or Onepiece's... cant remember which.

Is it possible to integrate most of the latest .net stuff these days? I hate the AIO .net installer and I hate looking at 10+ .net updates in add/remove programs.

One last unrelated note - can anyone point me towards information on integrating an office 2003/2007 with all updates into an unattended disc? Or failing that towards making an updated standalone office 2003 disc?

Thanks.

Cool, because I couldn't find them searching.

Nice to know there's such a knowledgeable community willing to reach out with news of whats going on.

Only Ryan knows whether or not he'll do another update pack. I don't know. But user_hidden's may be the closest to Ryan's since it was derived from his last XP SP3 update pack.

OnePiece has a slipstreamable .NET 1.1 addon. For anything newer you'll need to use a switchless installer.

The best sources for Office information I know are MSFN and Siginet's forum.

To answer your first question. The one that's closest to Ryan's Pack, is XPSP3_QFE_UpdatePack for Windows XP Post-SP3 by user_hidden. In fact, it has Ryan's personal 'seal of approvement'. ;)

To answer your second question, yes, there are several Net addons. Like the [Release] Onepiece .NET 1.1 SP1 TRUE addon for WinXP by Onepiece/nonno fabio, and the Microsoft .NET Framework Family 3.5 SP1 - v1.03 20090830, also by user_hidden.

And your third question has already been answered by 5eraph. ;)

Not likely I'll be doing one again any time soon (if ever). I'm currently in the middle of moving and work has had me taking on a lot more since my company offered early retirement a couple months ago. Sorry to disappoint, but FWIW, I have no plans to shut this site down. As long as this site is still serving a purpose, I see no reason to take it away.

well if you had bothered to read the entire thread concerning his last updatepack he made then you would know which one was closest to his already http://www.ryanvm.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6990
and you would also know that he probably won't will be making one any time soon, or probably not at all b/c of user_hidden. again, in the same topic.

@ryanvm, thanks. If I might be so bold as to suggest - could you make a little "ryan status" bar on the main page to let us know stuff like this? I'm sure you don't like being asked dozens of times on the forum each time your packs go dormant. If you just had a little blurb saying "I've stopped working on the packs for the foreseeable future, but I recommend xx for this application and yy for this one" - I'm sure you'd save yourself a lot of hassle.

Thanks for keeping the site going. Hopefully you'll visit frequently?

Hey didn't you just finish your masters not long ago? And you're being offered retirement? I'm guessing you completed it while working?

I DID read the whole thread, and if you'd read my first post you'd know I had issues with the 2 recommended there. Making this thread led me to user_hiddens pack which I'd forgotten about.

You can safely go with the user_hidden's pack, it's up to par with RyanVM's quality, however, this one is up to date:

I think he means that other people are retiring so now they're making Ryan do more work to help make up for those people leaving.

May I ask whether or not any of the update packs currently include some of the latest releases of Powershell? (2.0 is coming out soon, and I'm excited to play with it [^^])

@Happy-Dude, perhaps because it's a preview still, and not an official, optional release offered by WU//MU?
