For Windows Desktop Search specifically, HJW found a solution. For other updates, beats has posted a more general solution. For the nag to install WDS4 in IE8, the following INF code can be used:

Code: Select all

; Prevents the prompt to install Windows Search 4 when typing in the address bar.
HKCU,"Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\WindowsSearch","ShowPrompt",0x10001,0

from what i know, during updating process, MU writes some restore points looking like: $$ directly to windir and also within "Software distribution" folder, in windir...

I believe that some tiny scripting files are saved within one of the subfolders of the software distribution folder, that it tells the browser even the history of your updatind during large periods of time. if somehow you manage to integrate that info, of course after observing the bahaviour of it right after disabling the updates you do not like (windows live essentials, windows search, power shell), it wil hide those updates, preventing you from seeing them, but seems a bit messy for such a low goal.

Any ideas on the follownig two updates:
KB976002 (browerschoice)
KB979569 (.NET2)

The first once popups even if firefox is installed.
The last one is allready installed on the systems, but just keeps popping up.

I don't know about KB976002. It does not appear for me in the United States.

How was KB976569 installed? Are you certain it is installed correctly? I believe beats's solution should work for this if necessary.

try just putting a dummy browserchoice.exe in system32 dir. For example, my MRT stub with file version should satisfy if this solution works(just rename extracted mrt.exe to browserchoice.exe).

Hmm, yes I tried some things now.
This file:
brows.exe
(extracted from french updatepack by jaynbe).

I added it to the dutch updatepack (entries.ini):

Code: Select all

[dosnet_files]
d1,brows.exe

[txtsetup_files]
brows.exe = 100,,,,,,,20,0,0,browserchoice.exe
And this in the inf:

Code: Select all

;KB976002
HKLM,"%SP4UPDATES%\KB976002-v5","Description",0x0,"%HOTFIX% (KB976002-v5)"
HKLM,"%SP4UPDATES%\KB976002-v5","InstalledDate",0x0,"%VERSION%"

Try changing...

Code: Select all

brows.exe = 100,,,,,,,20,0,0,browserchoice.exe
...to...

Code: Select all

brows.exe = 100,,,,,,,2,0,0,browserchoice.exe

Hey i dont know if you can use this but what i did to make windows update happy and prevent the kb976002 to throw the browser choice and a desktop shortcut in my face at first login was installing the hotfix with runonceex and execute a reg file with the following right after

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce]
"KB976002-v5"=-

that will remove the regkey the update adds after its installed so its actually installed like its supposed too but since the browserchoice file is never executed it will not do anything unless you manually locate and open it :)

Ah, right, that did the job. Thanks! :)
