Hey guys, one of the biggest requests on this forum as you're all well aware of is a well-written guide for how to make a translated version of the update packs. I really don't have the time to do this, so I'm turning it over to you guys. Would any of you have the time/motivation to write a well-documented (including screenshots) guide describing how to translate a pack?
If one of you wants to do it, you can write it in Word or something and send it to me, and then I'll edit it and put it on my website (with credit going to you of course).
Thanks

Care to explain to me in 5 lines how? I find it out myself in detail then and write a guide.

Basic gist is that you need to figure out which files are language dependent and which ones aren't.
Next, replace the files which are language dependent with the localized one for your language, along with their cat files.
Next, change the relevent file build information in the INF with the information from those files (it's easiest to get that information by installing the actual fix in VirtualPC and checking the registry entries it creates).
Finally, TEST IT to make sure that the files install properly and that Windows File Protection picks up the files correctly.

Ryan,
I'm trying to make a translated pack.
I started with only the critical updates on Windows Update, New shockwave flash version, New Windows Update version, and HigmatCD.
These are already working fine, but I also want to add MP10.
I followed this manual:
- Obtain lastest WMP10
- Extract it somewhere
- Delete all .inf files inside (15 of them)
- Delete control.xml
- Delete all Synpl**.wpl (12 of them)
- Delete eula.txt
- Delete wmp10.chm, wmperr10.chm
- Delete msnlogo.png, msnsmall.png
- Compress all files en move *.cat to svcpack and add antries
Now my first question is: Is this method Windows File Protected?
And my second question is: How do you stay up-to-date with all those hotfixes coming out... Is there a site or something?

To get those files protected by WFP, you'll need to install the WMP10 CAT files from svcpack.inf. You can use the svcpack.inf that comes with my pack to get the general idea.
To find the hotfixes, myself and a few others pretty much just watch the MS KB for new articles as they come up. I personally have list of a few generic keywords that I search with every few days looking for new articles. I'm not sure how Ron Liang finds all the ones he does, though. One thing that's annoyed me is that it seems the KB search limits the results to 100 and there's no way to increase it (Ron or someone else, correct me if I'm wrong).

Hi Ryan,
I would like to give you support about the Italian language file. Can I do that?

I'm a newbie trying to create a translated update pack for Korean. I've downloaded most of the KB hotfixes/updates from the 2.1.0 list, but 7 were only available in English (I'm assuming the English version is common to all language versions of XP, and that otherwise MS would've put up a link to a translated version) and 14 of them were not available via the MS site. Is there a way to get these files from MS without having to contact customer support via phone (I'd rather not pay the fees associated with doing so)?
I'm also a bit unsure as to how to integrate things like gdi detection tool, windows script 5.6, highmat cd burning, wmp 10, etc. I have to figure this out to be able to recreate the packs 100%.
Also, I'm not sure if there would even be a demand for a Korean language version of the post SP2 update pack. I guess I could still just think of doing this as a learning experience.

http://hotfix.xable.net/download/index. ... dows%20XP/
go to this site, some hotfixes are availible here.
for other files, please check them on M$ download, some of them are availiable(just you haven't installed them or downloaded them). the rest files, some you can use the English one, if it doesn't contain language resources(eg. a driver or a core dll).
and if no way works, you'll have to remove it.

look up checksums in your registry.
WMPSECUPDATE="Security Update for Windows Media Player"
SECUPDATE="Security Update for Windows XP"
UPDATE="Update for Windows XP"
these three are needed.
well, a [strings] section will have strings that frequently appear. and in body sections(like registry, file copy, etc.), you use %STRINGNAME% to infer a long string this STRINGNAME stands for. and [string] section is what you define these things.
for the rest, you don't have to change them.
but if your windows folder is not called "windows", your WMP folder is not called

The issue is that checksums dont appear into my registry for some files, for a strange reason. Thats why I was searching for a tool to see them..
One good Example is KB899271 All the keys into the windoze registry are empty.
