XP Update Packs - Purposes and Differences Explained!

Post by Xable » Tue Jun 20, 2006 9:10 pm

For a while now there's been confusion about about how the XP Update Packs differ and what their purposes are. Hopefully this will help you out in distinguishing between them.

Ryan's Pack

Aim
To have an XP install which is as up-to-date as possible and to install all updates as close to the original installer as possible.

Purpose
To install anything that is considered to be beneficial to an up-to-date install.

Contents
All high priority updates on Microsoft Update plus some unofficial hotfixes and other extras. See Ryan's website for full details.

Xable's Pack

Aim
To install the bare minimum required to protect the system and keep Microsoft Update happy. This involves only adding registry entries which serve a purpose keeping them to a minimum and installing hotfixes in the high priority section of Microsoft Update only. High Priority updates consist of critical updates, security updates, and software updates. No fixes in the optional section are included.

Purpose
To be lightweight as possible. That means installing as little as possible while still making the system up-to-date and secure.

Contents
All high priority updates on Microsoft Update plus a few extras. See Xable's website for full details.

Hopefully this helps to clarify the differences. Feel free to ask any questions on the subject.
