Post by tomasz86 » Thu Feb 09, 2012 12:57 am

This project has been discontinued.

Please check http://tomasz86.com and the Unofficial SP 5.2 for Windows 2000 thread at MSFN for more information.

This is just the beginning... I'm going to post more specific information later on but at the moment I'll say that 2393802 & 2508429 must be installed first before replacing any other system files.

Compatible:

mlang.dll 6.0.2900.5512
msoert2.dll 6.0.2900.5512
msvcrt.dll 7.0.2600.5701
msvcirt.dll 7.0.2600.5701
notepad.exe 5.1.2600.5877
winsta.dll 5.1.2600.5512
ws2_32.dll 5.1.2600.5512

Unsure:

comctl32.dll (incompatible with 2479628)
imeshare.dll 9.2.4202.0

Incompatible:

crypt32.dll
dbghelp.dll
iphlpapi.dll
gdi32.dll
msvcrt.dll 7.0.3790.x (from Win2003)
msvcirt.dll 7.0.3790.x (from Win2003)
shlwapi.dll
urlmon.dll
wtsapi32.dll 5.1.2600.5512

If you know about any other files or have any objections to the list, please share your information and thoughts in this topic :)

I recommend Replacer to replace system files directly from Windows. Please use with care and always be prepared for the worst! Having a Linux LiveCD is recommended in case something wrong happens. Replacer always creates backup files (xxx.dll -> xxx.backup).

UPDATE

Wtsapi32.dll 5.1.2600.5512 is not compatible with W2K. Everything seemed to work fine but I found a bug when trying to disable and enable again Internet connection. It would freeze and the only way to close the window was to close and reopen explorer.exe. To enable the connection again you'd have to reboot the system. Anyway, I moved the file to the incompatible list.

I also added mlang.dll 6.0.2900.5512, msoert2.dll 6.0.2900.5512 & notepad.exe 5.1.2600.5512 as compatible. Especially msoert2.dll is recommended as it adds some APIs which will be needed for other XP files in the future.

Thanks ricktendo :)

Acus already prepared a 2K version of KB975791 but I haven't tested it yet. Do you know why this hotfix is no longer available at the M$ site?

I'm asking because there were cases when M$ removed a hotfix because it was buggy, ex. 983246 for MDAC 2.81 which is no longer available for XP/2K3.
