[Soon to be Released] Latest Daemon Tools SILENT *Comments*

Post by Nightwolf81 » Wed Nov 08, 2006 4:36 pm

I have been sending forums and mail off to locutus of daemon-tools.cc:

Forum Posts:

This is the email message:

Dear Nightwolf,

we indeed included the options you requested for.
Our next release will contain the Silent Install - Options.

Just out of curiosity - why is this option THAT important
for you?

best regards
LocutusofBorg

Lets have some responses here about this quote and then I'll send him the post address!

The reasons I wanted this feature back is because I want to support my favourite community forum (RyanVM) and because I love 'DT' and just want it to look pretty for this purpose (with the chance that it may fail due to someone elses AutoIT script abilities! and because ALL ''GOOD'' applications should be silent (if needed).

GOOD NEWS :D :D :D

and THANKS LocutusofBorg for listening.

Finally someones got them to do this. It really pisses me off when an app doesn't provided silent install switches.

I still can't see why they can't run a full install silently and then have any post reboot tasks handled via runonce.

Could you remind them to add a noreboot switch, I believe NSIS does this by default but it's best to check.

Oh, and a No (crappy spy-ware) Toolbar switch would be good too.

Well its a wast of time to install manualy and have to re-boot. That 1 reason can give. And just a lot of people will like it more for the silent option:D

Thanks for the feedback. . . I knew I could trust you guys/gals of this forum to see the good of a good winge every now and then (Well I am also stoked he has managed to get it up and running in vista already (Virtual Drive and Virtual Machine was the only thing holding me back from moving on to vista and now both are avaliable?)

I must say all the crap Vista went through to get out (IT'S WORTH THE WAIT) I was impressed with all it's new features (to speed me up).

I don't know the future on RyanVM's mind about Vista integration but I am more than happy to continue his XP versions as thats about all most of my customer base Hardware is capable of . . . But who knows (if ryanvm and siginet get out a lite maker of the VISTA before NLite (NVista or whatever he calls it) then we might just have some interesting things happening in the whole UI world!!

But we'll all stay with RyanVM until microsoft needs no more patches and everyone stops updating their applications. . . So RYAN your stuck with us forever!!! :)

Enjoy your day/night

We release new version, DT V4.0.8, tonight.

However, some words on my own:

We decided for ourselfes to include that silent installer. Noone forced us to
do so and we prefer it ourselfes, anyway.

@kof94: I'm pissed off of alot of things, too. However, keep one thing in mind:
we really work fulltime on DT, and we KNOW its far from being perfect.
But we need the cash from our "Spyware" Toolbar. We believe that it
is - because not mandatory - a good choice to support us. Otherwise,
we must publish DT only to licensed users. I personally decided that our
users should decide whether they want to support us or not. Without spend
money. Even without spend anything. So please do not simple write:
"Their crappy SPYware Toolbar", when this is in fact the last thing that
stop us from being commercial purely as alcohol or virtualcd.
If you dont like our "Spybar" - do not use it, YOU have the choice. This
is by far more then most other companys let you decide. Think about
it!

@larciel: I'm a developer and see far more then you might think ;)

The silent install was to make you guys happier with our software. I'm
a bit dissapointed (not angry, no offense!) when in return people write
about our "crappy spybar" which is read by many people that don't give
it a chance. Well, this is my PERSONAL opinion about it, no need to answer
and no need to discuss about it, just to let you know how WE feel on the
other site of the table. For you its just a mouseclick to throw out the bar,
for us - its our existence. When then others read "crappy bar", they will
not even think about a possible install, which costs us thousands of
dollars. Like already stated, only to give you our impression of things.
Of course you're entitled to your opinions and you don't have to support
us. But do not give people the same impression so we are forced to
change something. Let them decide for themselfes.

Yeh LocutusofBorg your a softie at heart (don't lie).

Your 100% correct (your tool is used more than anyone elses virtually) he he he that still makes me laugh!
BUT would it be if people were forced to pay $$$ for it (I'd prefer the Toolbar (Optional) too)!

LocutusofBorg glad your not offended but anyone who has to face the internet everyday knows how it works. . . 1 ToolBar = open door for a 2 Toolbar to be auto installed then 3 SpyBar = Crashes then 4 Hidden Virus = Data loss!

If you want us to benifit from this Toolbar - tell us a little about it here. . . I've never even installed it. . . Don't feel bad I never installed Ultraedit's one ot Flashgets or Googles. . . Infact ANY toolbars!!! I won't even give them a chance anymore as I've always found them to crash IE6 (probablly IE7 too)! and the Features they offer arn't up to scratch!

I Thank you again 'LocutusofBorg' and we all wan't to keep you happy (or we may miss out on the benifits yours and the rest of the crew for DT have offerd us and will Hopefully continue to do!).

p.s. I'll be making a switchless As soon as I get it (with no crappy spy bar. . . LOL. . . Nah I'll leave it stock standered so Lotus it's up to you to make sure the toolbar is silent as well)!

You bet - sometimes I think I'm too softhearted for this whole business.
BUT would it be if people were forced to pay $$$ for it (I'd prefer the Toolbar (Optional) too)!
I doubt it, on the other hand: who then will care? Ever tried to buy your food
or to pay your bills/rent for your appartment by saying "Hey, I'm Locutus,
you must give me this and that just because its me!"?
Do you think we do this 18hours job just for fame? DT have around 400.000
lines of code, we talk about something that is as complex as the core of
3d egoshooters already. I would lie if I tell you that I'm doing this all in
expectations to get nothing in return. That would be one fat lie. Of course
we hope people license and/or use our Toolbar. And frankly spoken, I can
not believe that you expected something different. Farstone, f.e. have 150
employes (maybe now even more). We decided to keep our team lean,
but from something we must life.
But as already stated, noone feels bad if you do not want to support us,
that is fully okay! It is YOUR decision. I only dislike we people try to
"convince" other people, too (I find no better word, I mean to "influence?"
them so that they do not even try it out.). If that would be a general
trend, then we a) went fully commercial or b) code something else
Okay, lets stop that discussion about all this, I guess you got my point
as well as I got yours. Lets hope we do not have to rethink about all this
because I think our actual business practice is more than fair to our
users. Otherwise, I can only suggest to buy Alcohol or VirtualDrive or something
else that do not even cotain adware

It's definitely fair. Point taken. :)

Of course you could always say "Resistance is futile," but I'm not sure that would work to pay the bills either. (I'm sorry, I couldn't resist.)

I just wanted to say thank you for doing the work you've done so far. Making silent installation a reality is a major boon for us here, whether your motivation for doing so includes us or not. The software you develop is greatly appreciated by many people that I've known.

Thanks for stopping by and explaning it yourself. I've been using DT for years and have appreciated the software and the effort put into it all along. Haven't tried 4.xx yet so I can't comment on the spybar but I'm sure it won't be as obstructive and as nasty as some others are
