ESET NOD32

Post by GH0st » Fri Aug 11, 2017 3:10 pm

NOD32 Antivirus 10.1.219.1 Final has just been released and I have tested it and like it! Yup, Mikey likes it, Mikey likes it! <--(let me know if you remember this saying and from where)

As you know, I am sticking with WinXP till it finally ends (2019) and my experience has lead me to stay with Eset NOD32. In the past I have always loved v7, it was the lightest, super smooth. Then v8 came out, which had better HIPS with their option of "SMART" setting on the HIPS. If you have to run HIPS, on XP, this is the best ... once you have TRAINED IT. There is a training mode to select and it lets ESET learn your system and what you do, then you change it to the SMART mode. I love this shiat!

If you do not use HIPS, then v7 has been the recommendation in the past ... till now! v10 is out and is really nice!!

I did do a "Dirty install" of v10, over-writing my install of v8 ... this was a bad idea! Trying to uninstall v10 and v8 same time, is like 'Mission Impossible', but I did it, cleaned it all up, to include cleaning the registry too. Then I installed v10.

Thing to note about v10, the HIPS has a automatic mode, which it was in by default. I then selected the training mode and reboot. This turned my rig (computer) into a lagging crap hole, taking multiple seconds to just open windows explorer. I spend some time setting it to EXCLUDE certain known things (like windows explorer) and this calmed things down a bunch. Then after just 3 days of TRAINING the HIPS, I got tired of the lag and selected SMART mode. Reboot, SUPA SMOOTH, I like it, I like it a lot!

A friend who does AV comparatives, says the newest ESET product may actually be ranked 4th or 3rd. TrendMicro will probably always be #1, but they are the most expensive! Kaspersky is ranked #2 and has been in the 'top 3' for years now. I say ESET may take the 3rd spot with this v10!

I will continued to work with it and report back. I got to do another install cause some how OFFICE 2003, once updated with an add-on (FileFormatConvertors) so it will work with "docx" files, it some how BREAKS Windows/Microsoft updates. So I just bought a new office off ebay for $10, MS Office 2007. Bad part is, someone with 2007 had the same problem, so, I may still be screwed ... maybe I should just choose to NOT update it.

Back to ESET ... there is one bad part of the newer version, its the GUI (Graphics User Interface), they used to have the best Antivirus, smooth GUI, that you could slide around tweaking it quickly as needed. I really love the old style. This newer version has a complicated GUI, many layers deep and looks like crap IMHO ... but I guess they wanted it to look like Win10, aka: WinLucifer.

Edit: To correct spelling and make it easier to read

I remember "MIkey likes it" from an 80's breakfast cereal commercial on TV. Can't remember which one, though.

Haven't tried NOD32. Still using avast, but now I'm finally test-driving Win10 since my new graphics card doesn't have XP drivers.

I also remember the "Mikey likes it" commercial. Two kids (a boy and a girl) don't want to try the new cereal, so they give it to Mikey because "he hates everything", but surprise - "Mikey likes it!" But I also don't remember what cereal it was. (Us old folks are showing our age. :) )

Re-look at the thread I previously pointed you to. At least one person has said he has an installation order that works. It might also work with SP4 installed, if uninstalling certain portions of it are possible. You'll just have to experiment a bit. If Kurt says that Office 2007 still has the same problem, then he is probably correct. At least you didn't spend much money. :)

Cheers and Regards

I briefly slid my eyes over the possible fix, but, seemed (at first glace) to be too complicated and a PITA! But I will look thru it again, would be nice to find a fix, cause this fresh install feels so good!

Thanks for finding that for me!

Thanks for finding this thread for me. Thanks again for making me read it again. The one guy actually did find what did in fact work for me!!

*** Install the three hotfixes (KB3127894, KB3203438 and KB3191897) manually, Now Microsoft Update is working fine!

Dibya, it's an EVGA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti SSC 4GB. Reference drivers from nVidia (1, 2) will not work using this card in XPx64. Tried from v347.09 to v384.94 (the latest) to no avail.

Thanks, Dibya. No hurry, and no need for me at this point. I've already completed the move to Win10. OS is on a shiny new SSD. My data drives are assimilated. Resistance is futile.

I will look at this CHrome fork later, sounds nice!

I was using the Eset v10, it was nice, but, not fully smooth as I like ... my current fresh OS install, I am using Eset v7 again, with no HIPS.

I had a dream the other night ... I ordered a computer from somewhere ... not saying it was Dell, but something like that. Latest Hardware, fastest stuff Intel makes (cause I'm an Intel WHORE) and Win10 home edition ... oddly enough, I was pleased with it. Then I woke up and realized it was just a dream.

BTW, same dream had 'Google Fiber' in my house! (1000 up/1000 down)

Well, I now have it installed and works surprisingly well!!! I am pleased. It does have some changes from what I been used too, so will take some getting used too. Like HTML5 on utube, I actually prefer the old flash style.

But this does install in the same Chromium way, so cleaning tools like CCLeaner (and others), all work the same! This is a big plus for me!

This is a good find, so thanks for thinking of me!

Bad part is, I feel that he will NOT be able to include XP in further/newer releases up the Chrome branch. So he may do some tweaks to this version, fixes, but this is end of life for Chrome on XP. That said, this feels good and tight, so should work fine for the next year or so!

Okay no problem . Keep a frequent backups as 10 as bad habits of corrupting big files . Thats all.
I can challenge you that you gonna miss your XPx64 .
