Windows Update broke, svchost 100%

Post by GH0st » Sat Aug 12, 2017 4:52 am

Wanted to share my problem and chronicle the fix needed to get MS Update to work again.

Installing SP3 for the Compatibility Pack borks Microsoft Update. It will search for updates as normal, but will end with the svchost getting pegged at 100% CPU Utilization for hours on end, and no updates offered. By manually installing these 3 hotfixes (KB3127894, KB3203438 and KB3191897), Microsoft Update is working fine again!

Thanks to: Tomcat76 @MSFN forum, for working so hard on this problem and also thanks too bphlpt for finding the cure and making me go back and read it again, cause I missed it first time.

My system is WinXP Pro, uSP4, Office 2003 with the "FileFormatConverters" installed. The updates added after adding FileFormatConverters is what breaks MS Upate.

I have not testing this on Office 2007, would be interested to see if the same fix works there as well!

I just did another reformat and install, for various reasons. This time I installed the Office 2007 ... the fix noted above does NOT work on Office 2007. Does not ... and now I have to reformat again, cause ... that little voice in my head tells me too!
