I plan to close new registrations effective immediately and will likely set this to read-only around the end of April or early May.
Closing registrations sure is the way to go. However, it should suffice, do you think there are so many spammers already registered that the mods cannot just ban them after registrations are clossed? I don't think so. In any case, one can aiways cull all zero-posters registered during the latest 5 years from the members database, which should catch any dormant cryptospammers lurking there. I think the current legitmate post frequency is so low that making the forums read-only would hardly change anything, once registrations are closed. Am I wrong? :?:

I agree, Den. I hope Ryan takes this approach. Admittedly, there is not much activity here these days, but I would hope that the ability to continue to post about existing projects and/or post questions and answers for those having issues will remain.

Cheers and Regards

There's no need for that. Anyone really interested in joining can reach several of us on other forums an ask for a referral, and we can then forward the request to 5eraph or someone else here. This should filter out any new spammers, IMO.

I will echo the sentiment that it stinks to have to move down this path, but it is likely the best way forward. Shutting down registrations is best but there are a few of us around that remember the old days!
Manual integration is the only right type of integration!

I value being able to post here because it enables me to provide updates and new features to projects that appear to have been abandoned by their originators. I don't suppose anyone minds me continuing their work because they appear to have lost interest in the forum judging by how long it is since they last posted. user_hidden, for instance, last posted on 04 March 2018, and 5ereph last posted on 14 November 2019 in this thread.

My next project is to complete Dibya's Extended XP :Lets patch XP for newer apps which should be challenging because I do not know the first thing about programming.

Still going after 17 years, but for how much longer I wonder. I would like the forum to keep going long enough for me to devise an addon for the Adobe Flash Player, because a surprisingly large number of websites still use flash for navigation controls. I was also considering an addon for address space randomization using Wehntrust, and one or two other things, but I seem to be speaking to myself here because the forum is almost deserted. Where have all the Vista lovers and XP diehards gone?

There is not much point to keeping the forum open for new posts if no-one wants to contribute more addons and update packs. I did say that I wanted to keep the forum open for new posts so that I could continue to update other's projects, and possibly make some new addons. However, I got stuck making an update to XPSP3_QFE_UpdatePack for Windows XP Post-SP3 that included WinUSb and KMDF pre-installed so that the user could execute an INF file to register his WCID compliant USB device. Having struggled with this for months I have succeeded in making it possible to install WinUSB and KMDF automatically from the Found New Hardware wizard, so the user does not have to go searching for WinUSB drivers. Ideally, the software would be installed automatically without the user having to go through the Found New Hardware wizard, as is possible with Windows 8,8.1 and 10, but this may require an upgrade to the Advanced Installer (advpack.dll) only available in later versions of Windows.

It took five years until I could honestly say I was happy with Windows 10 (advertising and quirks aside), but now I have to say, it's an impressive and surprisingly stable beastie. That said, I still prefer Arch or Debian for general use.

there used to be so many 3rd party update packs and addons whom now have dead links.
I think what needs to be done is people whom want to share their addons do so with links to internet archive is where many retro enthusiasts go these days. Things like multimedia, tools , tweaks cpl addons just so they aren't lost forever.
I used to enjoy a theme patch with a ferrari theme for xp it became so popular microsoft made their own for vista and windows 7
Information how to make themes I cannot find which is sad really.
When official support for an OS is gone people move on to the next but some of us hang on.
I hang onto XP as the driver support extends to 2014 that was when the cpu core count explosion really changed things.
I have still most of my internet games running better on xp than even windows 10 because theres no telemetry. Nvidia has telemetry as well now and soon I bet the mouse and usb will.

I can't stand 11's inability to ungroup windows in the taskbar. Hopefully, Open Shell will become completely useable on 11, and of course, there are other options like StartIsBack 11, or whatever it's going to be called.

Open Shell works completely fine on W11 for me, but obviously I have different settings and looks to yours.

Secondly, for ungrouping taskbar icons, look into "Explorerpatcher" ... turns the whole taskbar into the same look as W10

Wow!! This is actually quiet amazing that this forum is still here!! This was a really awesome time of my life being a part of this community. I don't think I've been in here in 10 years or so.

I wrote the RyanVM Integrator with Ryan so long ago and it looks like people were and maybe still are using it!

If anyone is interested... I will be developing another software adventure soon that is going to merge the computer technician world with cryptocurrency. I'll be needing to partner with people in cyber security and other aspects of business. I will need developers to join my team. It is going to be a massive undertaking and it's going to be freaking awesome! I'd love to have some old friends come hang out as well. If any of you remember me! 😉

Not sure if you'll ever read this Ryan... But it would be great to catch up! 💪

Not only are people still using the RVM Integrator in 2021, but there could be more addons in the pipeline if I can get my act together. The plan is to keep XP going into it's third decade after which Reactos will be in beta, and we will have the OS of our dreams.

From the Reactos website
ReactOS is a free and open-sourced operating system based on the Windows NT architecture, providing support for existing applications and drivers, and an alternative to the current dominant consumer operating system. Compatibility with Microsoft Server 2003 is the ReactOS design goal
I am not involved with the project. Although the aim is to reproduce the functionality of NT5.2 they don't even have plans for WMI, hibernation, UMDF, WFP, and LSASS among other things so the outlook for a beta release in this decade looks grim. You can see Missing ReactOS Functionality at their website.

I'm not interested in trying to transfer this site elsewhere. FWIW, it does appear that this site will still live on at archive.org for those looking for historical information.

Im currently running Win 11 since it was released, and I'm not looking back.
XP was great but I moved on a long time ago ... I usually just visit here to see what projects people are busy with.

Take Care peeps <3
