Firefox v2.0 final to be released Tuesday

Post by ricktendo64 » Sat Oct 21, 2006 2:21 pm

Found @ Wincert.net
October 20, 2006 (Computerworld) -- The final version of the new Firefox 2.0 Web browser will be launched Tuesday, just eight days after the last review candidate for the software was released for public use. A spokeswoman for the nonprofit Mozilla Foundation, which maintains the open-source browser code, said the Release Candidate 3 (RC3) version of Firefox 2.0, which was posted for download on Monday has been doing well among users and is ready to be finalized as Firefox 2.0 for distribution.

"RC3 is substantially the same as the final release," the spokeswoman said. The final version will be branded as Firefox 2.0 and will be available for free download on its own Mozilla Web page sometime on Tuesday afternoon. "That's definitely scheduled," she said. The news comes days after Microsoft Corp. launched its first full upgrade of its Internet Explorer browser, IE7, on Wednesday.

That's because they've switched to NSIS for their installers. You can probably just use those switches instead.

This information applies to SVCPACK installations...
Desktop Installations behave differently.

Firefox 2.0 is a 7zip selfextracting archive and it works from svcpack using the -ms switch although it does not create a quicklaunch shortcut. Start Menu and Desktop shortcuts are created.

Here is a VBscript to create the quicklaunch shortcut;

Code: Select all

Set objShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
Set colEnvironmentVariables = objShell.Environment("Volatile")

strFolder = colEnvironmentVariables.Item("APPDATA") & _
 "\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch"

Set objShortCut = objShell.CreateShortcut(strFolder & _
 "\Mozilla Firefox.lnk")
objShortCut.TargetPath = "%ProgramFiles%\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
objShortcut.WorkingDirectory = "%ProgramFiles%\Mozilla Firefox"
objShortCut.Description = "Launch the Firefox Web Browser"
objShortCut.Save
copy/paste the above to notepad and save as firefox.vbs
This script also works in Vista.

I find that vbscripts are reliably executed if you call it in a cmd file like this:
wscript.exe "fullpathto\firefox.vbs"

Firefox 2.0 does not use a 7zip SFX installer. It uses NSIS.

Google-> http://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox2/Status ... #Installer
Installer

* w32 only, moving to NSIS Installer (nullSoft/OSS), saves us 130K on the installer size, gets rid of our previous solution which was pretty messy
* pretty much ready to go, just need to merge to tree
* mpilgim: there's an existing bug on file for supporting installers in high contrast themes, be sure to test your new solution on that, too.
* axel: what's the impact for l10n repackaging?
o when it lands, it will be no different than our current solution for repackaging
* bsmedberg: we can still land this in an installer2 directory for now
* should be ready for A2
* need to create a single tracking bug
* axel: what's the license
o mpilgrim: seems to be ZLIB

Maybe you are both right, Just right click on the installer choose properties and see:

The Silent Switch that worked for me is /S... Which happens to be a Nullsoft switch.

NSIS uses LZMA compression, which is what 7zip uses as well. That doesn't mean NSIS = 7zip.

I've never known the following command to work on NSIS

Find /I "RunProgram=" "Firefox Setup 2.0 RC 3.exe"

although the above is well known to work on 7zip'd exe's

I've never once said NSIS = 7zip, i said RC3 installer is 7zip
its you that keeps trying to tell me its NSIS, and it isn't.

The setup.exe file INSIDE the distributed package is NSIS.
but that doesnt change the fact that the distributed package is 7zip

Now to revisit svcpack and try /S instead of the oldschool -ms ...
using /S is the same as -ms, no quicklaunch shortcut created.

@ Shark007, another way to create the shortcuts with a AddOn is to create a hybrid svcpack and .inf addon with the .lnk files inside a .cab to be copied to -> 16410,Microsoft,Internet Explorer,Quick Launch

Edit the .lnk file properties to make compatible with alternate program files folder placement with the folowing variables:
%ProgramFiles%\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe
for difrent Drive letter
%SYSTEMDRIVE%\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe

Or simply use a [ProfileItem]

I think I'll hold off from upgrading to 2.0 for the time being, at least until many of my fave extensions and themes update themselves to support it.
