In case you were wondering...

Post by RyanVM » Wed Jun 06, 2007 8:14 am

As anybody who has signed up in the last few months can attest, it can take me awhile to get new accounts activated sometimes. The reason I'm manually activating accounts is to catch spammers before they have a chance to post on this board, as I'm sure many of you have seen how badly they're hitting many phpBB-based boards these days.

Anyway, I just thought you guys should get a glimpse of what I get to see every day when I wake up and decide to activate new accounts.

Every orange-highlighted row is a spammer account. I think it pretty well speaks for itself.

Hey you get IrinaSH and Clarissa too? :P

I discovered a nice little trick to make it much easier to ID the spam accounts. Install the phpBB Danish language. The script that they use must pick the first available language or something. So if I see Danish I delete (my apologies to those who really do want Danish on my board).

Yeah, IrinaSH is by far the most persistent of the spammers I get. Nice tip on the languages!

How about enabling 'Enable visual confirmation' if you haven't so far?

Maybe a newbie link, but:

It's been cracked. Prolly using some kind of crude OCR.

oh, i've ever seen a chinese forum with this anti-spam method:
it asks a simple question, and you need to input the answer.
e.x. 1+2=? you input 3

phpBB seems to be in a state of perpetual beta/rc testing. If version 3 doesn't come out this year I'm switching to something else like smf.

BTW, yes, this board uses a CAPTCHA. No, it doesn't make much of a difference.

@RogueSpear - phpBB3 is in RC status, so have hope :)

vBulletin (Siginet spells it wrong as "vBullentin") is a good choice.
AT LEAST, IT SUPPORTS CHINESE SUBJECT as phpBB DOESN'T.
in phpBB those chinese characters can be shown in a post, but if it's in a title, it will be converted to "&#xxxxx;" (without quote). xxxxx is 5 numbers, and if you type ALT+xxxxx in your keyboard's Num zone, you will get that chinese character.
however, i love the style of phpBB. it looks good.

yumeyao - I was giving Siginet a hard time about the misspelling of vBull. I'm very familiar with it :). As for your bug, have you had a chance to try phpBB3 yet? I'd be interested in seeing if they fixed that or not.

Hey, what about InvisionPowerBoard. I'm using it right now as my site's forum ! It's really great and bug free, as far i know ... much easier too use, with a rich CPanel ! Disadvantage: it is not free like phpBB :(

what if not? :?

------------------edited-----------------------
by the way, when you're to change it, please notice me. I fear that chinese characters will all be turned to &#xxxxx....because in fact, phpBB DOES convert all characters to those, but when in a post, they automatically returns to chinese characters as the user's OS system is chinese.
so if you determinate to do so, please notice me, i'll use "edit" function to save all posts in my computer. once if they are really messed up after you change the system, i can reuse "edit" function to recover them.

thanks.

I'm waiting to see how good phpBB3 turns out to be before I worry about paying for any forum software. From what I'm seeing so far, it's a vast improvement over phpBB2 in every way.

That's what has been killing me. V3 looks fantastic, at least from an end user perspective. I've read in their forums where some people are experiencing a little bit of a learning curve administering it. I haven't bothered to install a test setup and mess around with it myself, so I can't really vouch for those claims.

But overall it really seems like the phpBB team is doing their best to bring their software up to speed with their competition. I don't know how many people are on their dev team or what other things they have going on in their lives, but man this seems to be taking a while.

If you haven't run in to any IPB bugs, then good for you. I asked whether IPB is good enough at Hydrogenaudio, and got my share of horror stories that I steer clear of it... :?

Well, instead of paying, why not use a free alternative like SMF?

That is, if phpBB3 is not good enough for you and you want to use a different forum. If phpBB3 is good enough, I think (hope) migrating the forums to phpBB3 should be a painless operation.

Well, here's to hoping the best!
