Long story short - Dreamhost moved me to a new server, DNS some how got messed up, and it took them two days to respond to my critical support ticket. Consider me unimpressed with the entire experience.

Yes, I would agree with compstuff on that. I seemed to have gone through withdraw symptoms myself.

Yikes, gonna have to get that fixed.

To be fair, given how all the shared hosting companies have sliced away their margins with their price wars, I'd be surprised if you ever find a company that doesn't run into a problems. A newer company might fare a bit better because they don't yet have a large number of customers or a large amount of old hardware, but I'd be curious to see how your host holds up if--when--a problem does occur down the line. On the whole, I've been pretty pleased with DH the two times I've been with them (I first signed up many years ago when they were still somewhat new and not that well-known, but I canceled when I realized that I didn't have enough traffic to warrant a paid hosting service, and then rejoined recently when my traffic was starting to become burdensome for self-hosting), and as a bonus, they also provide the best controls for a shared host provider (I'm a bit of a control freak).

I wonder, though, if RVM would've been better off sticking with shared hosting instead of VPS; the latter isn't exactly their forte...

One way to 'vet' hosting providers is to ask them for copies of their internals procedures; recoveries, moves, add, changes, etc, etc. The speed at which those written procedures are supplied to you, their revision date (including tracking of rev changes!!!) and their completeness/accuracy will go a long way towards telling you how good management is.

I've actually been pretty impressed with www.hostmonster.com since I moved to them from dreamhost. I have allready had a couple of cases where I had to call them for support and they were very quick to fix the problem. Dreamhost doesn't give you the option to call for support. But hostmonster does. They answer the phone promptly and give great support. I haven't had much downtime since I changed hosts either. When I was with dh... I had lots of downtime.

They did. Almost half a month's worth, even :)

@code65536 - Yeah, the move to the VPS hasn't been working out as well as I'd hoped it would. You might be right about switching back.
