Is it okay to remove Outlook Express from an XP disc?

Post by marzsyndrome » Mon Jan 30, 2012 4:00 pm

I was wondering if I could get away with using nLite to remove Outlook Express from the XP disc seeing as I hardly use it anyways? I thought I read somewhere or other that getting rid of it would cause side-effects elsewhere but I can't seem to find such advice through Google.

Anyone care to clarify?

If you'll use Microsoft Office Outlook afterwards, then don't remove it, because Office Outlook needs Outlook Express. If you don't intend to use another software for managing your e-mail, then it's ok.

If you ever want to save a web page as MHTML (*.mht) in Internet Explorer, or open MHTML files created by IE, then you need Outlook Express installed.

I thought Chrome/Opera/Firefox can handle those without hassle. Maybe I was wrong... :)

Can't speak for other browsers, but Firefox does not support .mht (nor would I ever expect it to).

So, out of curiosity, since Win7, and Vista, don't have Outlook Express anymore, then what takes care of MHTML files in those OS?

[Nice to see you Ryan. Glad you're keeping an eye on the place.]

Cheers and Regards

In Vista/7 you will find OE stuff in "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Mail"

In Chinese forums there're people worked out a way to remove OE while keeping mht support.

Keep acctres.dll inetcomm.dll inetres.dll msoeacct.dll msoert2.dll and wldap32.dll . Then register inetcomm.dll (regsvr32)

Haven't tried it ever myself though.
