easy question on making simple update pack

Post by cleverswine » Fri Mar 07, 2008 4:01 pm

I have a program that has no installer. It's just two files (an exe and a dll). It can be installed simply by copying to \\program files\<new dir> and creating shortcuts in the Start Menu.

Should I bother making this an update pack or is it better to use $OEM$ with RunOnceEx?

Well... you wouldn't make an updatepack. It would simply be an addon. Sounds like a very simple addon to make. I would make an addon instead of using $OEM$ with RunOnceEX because an addon is much simpler to add to the disk whenever you want to add it in the future. Also... addons can be used without winnt.sif whereas the $OEM$ method requires winnt.sif. I mainly only use RunOnceEX when I am installing utilities that must be installed at first login... or if I want to have a selectable list of utilities that I can choose from using a tool like "Windows Post-Install Wizard" or "Windows Installation Helper Utility".
