We've reached the three year anniversary of this addon, though the first iteration was unreleased. Due to a hardware failure (no worries, not my hardware) I've transitioned my XPx64 machine to Win10 over the past couple weeks. I still plan on updating this addon and other releases for the next 20 months--at least until POSReady 2009 reaches EoS on 2019-04-09.

All my testing and INF data collection will continue to be done entirely in VMs. And the build process is still heavily scripted; it's just that the scripts run mostly in Win10 now with surprisingly little CMD editing. To create ISOs with RVMi in Win10 I was forced to place a copy of mkisofs.exe in SysWOW64 (I'm still using a 64-bit OS) and rename it rvmisofs.exe. nLite operation is unchanged as far as I can tell, though as a precaution I enabled .NET 3.5 under "Windows Features" before installing nLite just to be sure it would work properly.

I've upgraded to Win10/x64 since it came out.
have had no issues
my test PC for XP updating is a Dell 2400, and virtualbox on my main Win10 rig

happy anniversary on the POSready addon

Thanks, everyone. :)

Really didn't want to move away from XPx64; it's been the most stable OS I've had regardless of the machine running it. Serendipitously, I decided to start trying Win10 about a week before a friend fried one of his graphics cards. I was using one of his, you see, and he needed it back posthaste. It was only when I bought a replacement for myself that I realized that nVidia's 10-series cards aren't supported in XP (or Win10 LTSB as I found out the hard way, but that's beside the point).

(Seriously, though. Why would nVidia and Microsoft suppport an old 780 in Win10 LTSB, but prevent a new 1050 from working? Seems backward to me. Funnier still, the 780 is still a better card than a 1050 Ti. WTF.)

I just did an install using this pack, worked on it yesterday and last night. Very good install, very strong, nice and quick too. Low latency. I decided to break with uSP4 for the time being. Am pleasantly surprised with this install! Had to do it twice, since my first attempt included dotNet 2.0 and 4.0 by another person and something went wrong, so just made another ISO with out, K.I.S.S. approach (keep it simple stupid) always works best!

Thanks for your hard work here!!!

If I read 5eraph's post correctly, he's not doing anything with it. It wasn't his and he had to return it to his friend who needed it back.

Another weird MS action...

KB4025398 was released containing msinfo32.exe ONLY and is included in this pack.

That file has disappeared from MS Catalog and is replaced by the same KB # dated Aug 28, 2017 but contains msinfo.dll ONLY.

Very interesting, SHO_GuN. I have the new update and it's ready for me to add.

Should I release an addon update now? Or should I wait for the next Patch Tuesday (two weeks from now)? I'm open to suggestions from all of you. The Microsoft Update site isn't offering the new update yet, but I'll add it now if there's interest.

What I'm wondering is whether the original KB should be scrapped beings it doesn't seem to exist any longer.

This new version is NOT showing up on MS Update, I just saw it on MS Catalog. I meant to do an install using a previous update pack and see if either are requested but got tied up. I will do that now and report back.

MU is not offering KB4025398 even without it being in the update pack.

I'd just let it go and see what patch Tuesday brings. Maybe a new KB with both the exe and dll?

Registry entries given in the "More Information" section of the KB article are in the addon, but don't know how to test TLS 1.1 and 1.2.

You need test pages, like
https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/viewMyClient.html
https://www.computerworld.com/article/3 ... s-1-2.html

IE8 under XP cannot open those webpages. I'm guessing KB4019276 only applies to IIS, not IE. I do not know how to test for support in IIS.

Firefox 52.4.0 ESR has no issues accessing those sites even when XP is not patched. TLS 1.1 and 1.2 support is built into Firefox. IE does not gain support for TLS 1.1 or 1.2 when Firefox is installed.

Is removing an entry from entries_POSUpdates.ini in the [obsolete] section enough to keep RVMi from removing that specific update?

Update:
I tried commenting the following 2 entries, but RVMi then skips processing the POSReady Addon

Code: Select all

;qfeUpPck.inf|,KB954193,|,|1
;KB954193
The log only shows Processing entries_POSUpdates.ini v Build Date:
I compare the original extracted .7z with the one I created and everything was the same except for the changes I made above. Why is the modified addon not working?

Can someone tell be how to correctly repack an addon because I just unpacked XPSP3_QFE_POSReady_Addon_20170812_5er.7z and repacked it with

Code: Select all

7za a -r XPSP3_QFE_POSReady_Addon_20170812_5er <filespath>\*.*
without making any changes and RVMi will no longer process it. It's been so long since I messed with this stuff and I have no clue right now. The hashes are different too.

Maybe because you used a recent version of 7za ?

I finally got it working with the following command running 7za from within the addon directory:

Code: Select all

7za a -r -m0=lzma -mx=9 ..\XPSP3_QFE_POSReady_Addon_20170812_5er.7z *.*
No idea why RVMi did not like the way I created the other file mentioned previously.

I think it's because RVMi lacks the support of latest LZMA2 archives.
With -m0=lzma you've forced 7zip to make an archive to LZMA (=version 1 or legacy) format, by default the recent versions of 7zip are making LZMA2 archives.
I remember it was the same with WinRAR & nLite (but because it use 7z.exe and 7.z.dll you can update it)

Anyway, I think you can upgrade the 7-Zip Standalone Console in RVMI by simply downloading the preferred version of 7zip Extra files (latest stable is "http://www.7-zip.org/a/7z1604-extra.7z"), extracting "7za.exe", renaming it in "7zdn.exe" and copying it to the "\RVM Integrator\Plugins" folder.

Thanks for the infos. I've made a note of it and updated the 7zdn. I did not realize replacing the old 7zdn would
work. If I recall correctly 7zdn was a special version without the compression component included in it. I'm not
sure why this was done that way and if replacing it would break anything.

This problem also occurred a while back with Vista and Win7. MS never fixed it for Vista. It took me over 4 hours to get any results for Nov on XP running wuauclt /detectnow. The same thing happens when you run Windows Update http://www.update.microsoft.com/microso ... x?ln=en-us

It's not just you, I left a computer that I did up for a club running overnight and it got nowhere.

I've found that Installing the latest IE8 update, and THEN searching, will allow the search to finish within a minute or two. Search for "Internet Explorer" on the Microsoft Update Catalog, order by "Last Updated", then Ctrl+F to find "POSReady" to find and download the latest IE8 update.

The current Posready Cumulative for IE (Nov 2017) is kb4047206

People who experience high SVCHOST issue, and windows update hanging for hours, It's because you have Office 2007 or Office 2003 Compatibility pack installed. It's well know and MS will not fix it. The way to fix that is to manually install the office updates, for 2007 and the compatibility updates by hand. Also IE cumulative updates should be hand installed. It's well documented on msfn and proven.

Not in my case, Destro. Happens in VM on a fresh install of Windows as well, without Office.

Install latest IE cumulative update.

Create a short cut.
%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\muweb.dll,LaunchMUSite
Works like a charm every time.

I have dealt with this issue myself. These are two different problems. When I update on 2nd Tuesday, it does take hours to do the system search, for reasons I don't know (will try what 5eraph suggested). I also have had the update issue caused by OFFICE, on both 2003 and 2007. These are two differant problems. I have cured the office problem, but NOT adding any more updates to office after installing the Compatibility pack. Does leave me alittle open, but I only use WORD and not that often.

I can do updates thru MS but, long time to do the initial search.
