Re: [Addon] XPSP3 QFE POSReady Updates 20171128

I don't trust MS Update website and would prefer to install the updates manually. At this stage there are not too many of them so it should be easy to do. Can someone please confirm that my procedure is correct, I have never used MS Update Catalog before.

My XP has just been built using the packages listed below:

XPSP3_QFE_UpdatePack_10-10-17.7z
XPSP3_QFE_POSReady_Addon_20171115_5er.7z
YumeYao_IE8_Addon_Clean_ENU_1.5.35.7z

So I only need to monitor updates after 2017-Nov-15 on MS Update Catalog website and RyanVM forums.

1) Go to MS Update Catalog website and type POSReady in the search bar:

http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/

http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com ... q=POSReady

a) make sure to click on "Last Updated" tab title to refresh the sort order with the latest updates on top. A small blue arrow will appear at the bottom of the tab title:

b) is it only necessary to monitor WES09, POSReady 2009 and Windows XP Embedded or is some other category also needed, like Windows Server 2003 or 2008?

2) Monitor change logs on RyanVM forums for the three packages listed above.

3) Download relevant kb exe files and install them one by one. If there is more than one file available then the installation order might be important, in that case I'll just bring this up on this thread, I guess.

4) I might later install Excel from MS Office Home and Student 2007, is it possible to run it without any MSO updates?

-----
Update to 1) above:

The best keyword to enter in the search bar seems to be "Windows XP Embedded". If "POSReady" is entered instead some updates will not be shown:

Update to 3)
POSReady updates must be first enabled in the registry, otherwise KB setup error will pop-up.

-----
Disclaimer: I use Linux Lite, Arch Linux and Debian for everyday tasks and only need XP to run a few specialized Windows applications.

TL:DR - Probably yes.

Want to wait for Microsoft to unblock KB4056892 (a Win10 update), which includes a microcode update for modern microprocessors to mitigate the Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities.

KB4056615 for POSReady may include the same microcode update, as the update package includes processor-specific kernel files. It would be nice to have a bug-free update. And considering Atari800xl's issue with this update, I'd like to err on the side of caution.

Good news, maybe Intel releases microcodes for windows soon, according to Intel no Bios updated required to solve Meltdown/Spectre flaws

SSD is very fast, my older computer tops out at 270-280mbs ... intel ICH10DO south bridge. Which is nice. Maybe some day I may get a new computer and get some of that speed :))

XP can take full advantage of an SSD... All we really need is a good, free utility that sits in the taskbar and automatically runs TRIM whenever necessary.

Yes, but it's not free. I forget the app... But there's definitely something around...

Modern SSDs do automatic garbage collection last I heard... But I am not aware of any SSD that "self-Trims"...
