[Release] Startup Delayer CPL Addon v2.3.125-070830

Post by Mrs Peel » Fri Feb 10, 2006 6:51 am

My favourite startup management utility and a valuable tool if you like to pace your startup applications so they don't overload windows. If you config it to use the GUI mode launcher (which I personally recommend)) then you can use the cancel button on that to halt the startup sequence at any point - very handy for when you want a barebones startup with minimal processes running.

There is one shortcut in Programs\Utilities and a new CPL extension for those who prefer to configue their startup delays from there and both of which are pointing to the utility which configures your startup apps delays. You must set up a configuration profile for this app before it will work.

Please note that this latest release does NOT inlcude the VB runtime files, so you will need to installer them on your system by other means.

Startup Delayer
Can you learn another language in the time it takes for your machine to boot? Do you turn on your PC when you go to bed, so it's finished booting by the time you get home from work the next day?

When Windows loads it's Startup file, it attempts to load every program in there at the same time. Therefore if you have quite a lot of programs starting when Windows starts, each program will try and grab CPU time so that it can load. If each program tries to do this at the same time, you soon notice the slow down that occurs, due to your CPU trying to help all the programs to load, and your hard disk accessing multiple files.

Startup Delayer allows you to setup how many seconds after Windows has started, to load each program. For Example, if you have your mail program and a special clock starting up, then you can make your mail start say 10 seconds after Windows has loaded, and then the special clock start 20 seconds after Windows Starts.

Enjoy (or not)

That's because Ryan hasn't uploaded my file yet.

And that is why I had NOT bumped this post to the top of the forum yet - which was previously sitting on page 300-and-something before you just bumped it, cos there's been no replies to this thread in 18 months.

I guess if I want to get a reply to my posts to know that people are actually using them after more than a year and a half of no replies I should just disable the download link huh? Or nuke them and wait for a flood of whining PM's from ungrateful members?

So, now that you have so rudely bumped this thread before I was ready to announce the update, you'll just have to wait patiently for Ryan to get this updated on the server.

OK, the link is live now..... I just rebuilt this with an uninstaller and to update to the latest version (which I didn't realise had been released cos the project had been inactive for 3yrs).

I have to say that I am not impressed with some of the changes that the author has made in this new version because it installs and saves settings in such a way that it is no longer portable, and saves stuff in two different places. Anyhoo, I did what I could with it and it works AOK at my end, but I would like to hear some feedback to see how this new installer/uninstaller is working for others.

Also be advised that if this thread (which had no bloody replies for 18mths before today) does not get some activity real soon (other than complaints about dead links) then it goes onto my Cull Alert list....

Well I am going to try this - my current working system does exactly what this is designed to try and prevent and can take an absolute age to boot up completely.
Should be able to install it on my running system so this will be doubly useful - for my unattended builds and on my main system (which will get sorted out one day when I am not so busy doing everyone else's!)
Thanks again Mrs. P - you continue to dig these little gems up.

Thanks for the update. I wasn't intending to be rude. My apologies. I use many of your addons and appreciate your efforts. When I get a chance to test this in a few days I'll be sure to confirm my anticipated success.

Sorry I haven't bumped your other threads. Here are the ones I thankfully benefit from your efforts on (some of which I've used before, most of which I'll be trying for the first time with my next build):

MrsP_AlbumArt_Downloader_Addon_v1.6.0-070804
MrsP_Disable_WinPicFax_Addon_v1.3-070805
MrsP_Duplicate_File_Finder_Addon_v1.1.0.3-070810
MrsP_FreeDB_EasyNav_Addon_v1.2.5.0-070804
MrsP_Startup_Delayer_CPL_Addon_v2.1.10
MrsP_The_Font_Thing_Addon_v0.80b2-070821
MrsP_TMPGEnc_Free_Addon_v2.524.63.181-070826
MrsP_uTorrent_Addon_v1.7.2.3458-070811
MrsP_XnView_LCE_Addon_v1.91.3-070814

Again, my thanks for your efforts.

Thanks to a rick trick, I was able to add an extra section to the uninstaller of this which will give you a prompt asking if you want to also delete all your personal settings in the User App Data directory.

Cheers!
