[Release] BitTorrent's uTorrent Addon v1.7.4.4482-070909

Post by Mrs Peel » Thu Mar 09, 2006 1:47 am

OK I've been in a snot about updating this since Ludde sold the software to Bram Cohen (friend of the anti-piracy agencies) but I've finally bitten the bullet and made a new version cos I am in the process of rewriting all my addons to have uninstallers.

Because some peeps are not happy about Ludde's sellout, cynical about the future of uTorrent under the development of a commercial software company, frustrated with the ridiculously HUGE number of constant bugfix updates this thing has been undergoing over the last few months, worried that their private torrent sites might add uTorrent to their tracker ban lists, or just generally have the perception that recent versions of the program are not performing as well as some previous version.... I have decided to henceforth keep all previous addon versions archived below so y'all can make your own choice about which one you prefer. I also decided to update the older version packs with uninstallers (awwww wasn't I kind)

Please note that this client is my personal edition and there is a lot of stuff which I have customised (icons and permanent download categories and optimisation stuff) and preconfigured to suit myself. Also note that I have made this to be "portable" with everything self-contained inside it's own program folder. If you don't want to use my custom setup then you have two choices - either configure it to your own personal taste on first run OR..... open the settings.dat file in a text editor and delete the contents of it.

Do NOT just delete the settings.dat file or the program will loose it's portability and move all it's config files to %userprofile%\Application Data\uTorrent. In case any of you DID inadvertently do that (cos you didn't read my release notes properly) then I have included a post-install cleanup routine in the reg entries to nuke that on reboot ;)

uTorrent v1.7.4.4482
LINK: MrsP_uTorrent_Addon_v1.7.4.4482-070909
MD5: 7BD92888AB74EBE3170B4289542567AF
SIZE: 695 KB
Description: The lightweight and efficient BitTorrent client.
Op System: Windows 2000, XP Home, XP Pro & 2003 (x86 only)
Builddate: 2007/09/06
Language: Multi-language
Title: uTorrent
Version: 1.7.4.4482
License: Freeware
Website: http://www.utorrent.com
Installs to: "%programfiles%\Internet\uTorrent"
Installer: Removes ENTIRE program folder and EVERYTHING in it, eg: personal settings, user data, backup dat files created by program AND any torrent files you were silly enough to save in there - so don't say I didn't warn you!
At A Glance
* Multiple simultaneous downloads
* Configurable bandwidth scheduler
* Global and per-torrent speed limiting
* Quick-resumes interrupted transfers
* RSS Downloader
* Trackerless support (Mainline DHT)

Micro-Sized Yet Feature Filled. Most of the features present in other BitTorrent clients are present in µTorrent, including bandwidth prioritization, scheduling, RSS auto-downloading and Mainline DHT (compatible with BitComet). Additionally, µTorrent supports the Protocol Encryption joint specification (compatible with Azureus 2.4.0.0, and now BitComet 0.63) and peer exchange.
Resource-Friendly. µTorrent was written with efficiency in mind. Unlike many torrent clients, it does not hog valuable system resources - typically using less than 6MB of memory, allowing you to use the computer as if it weren't there at all. Additionally, the program itself is contained within a single executable less than 160 KB in size.
Skinnable and Localized. Various icon, toolbar graphic and status icon replacements are available, and creating your own is very simple. µTorrent also has support for localization, and with a language file present, will automatically switch to your system language. If your language isn't available, you can easily add your own, or edit other existing translations to improve them!
Actively Developed and Improved. The developer puts in a lot of time working on features and making things more user-friendly. Releases only come out when they're ready, with no schedule pressures, so the few bugs that appear are quickly addressed and fixed.
Screenshot I made of the custom version I posted here:

Did I happen to mention how much I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE this program?????????

:D

PS: Despite recent developments, this still is my fave bitorrent client of all time cos y'all know how much I adore teesney weensey tightly coded utilities with a very small resource footprint. And did y'all know that I had the very rare priviledge of being the first person ever to write a review for this l'il darling over at BetaNews forums ;)

Your status icons are out of date, you should find an updated version (or use another set). It's missing the icon for All, Active and Inactive. Your toolbar set is WAY out of date, it's for like, 1.4 when there was no RSS button or configuration button. Please, don't bundle out of date sets.

If you added the language file, make sure it's utorrent.lng for build 437.
edit: checked, it is the latest. How come you included a blank ipfilter.dat? It's not required to make it use its own folder, just settings.dat. To make it easier for people to add entries?

And yes, the screenshots on the website are out of date, I just haven't updated it 'cause I don't have um.. any proper torrents to make screenshots from. :D I might do it later, or let ignorantcow do it.

Oh buggery bollox! I never even noticed that cos I was using 1.4 until a few hours ago

Wow and now I've gone and pissed off the developer.... just as well I didn't really embarass myself with a rave about loving the software so much I wanna have his love child

LOL so where do I report for my spanking now? It was almost worth me being bad to get such an auspisious visitor to drop on by to our wee corner of the web ;)

Cheeries m'dearies

PS: Yah Firon, the blank ipfilter.dat was to help peeps make their own ones. Hey you can use my pretty screenshot if you like, I just updated it :P

pg2 blocks Utorrent.com

Biggest news in the past few days in the p2p world is the Retspan story. Lots of inaccuracies and condemnations of Ludvig Strigeus (aka ludde) over his deal with peerfactor, subsidiary of Retspan, an anti-p2p association. Some claim its the end of the world, that the client will serve Retspan directly, and through the licensing of a single DLL file, ludde is permanently tainted as a traitor to p2p.

To this end, the current version of PG2+blocklist will block attempts to even visit the µtorrent website. The block gives the message "utorrent.com works for anti-p2p RetSpan". Mr. Strigeus described the block as 'ridiculous' and called for it to be removed. One of the admins at PG2, gong by the name "phrosty" blamed it on BlueTack, provider of their blocklist.

Over at BlueTack, admin "fa" appeared unaware of what the connection was between Mr. Strigeus and PeerFactor. When asked why the block was added, with the natural suggestion of "ignorance of what was actually going on" 'fa' replied "fuck you". Then, to Mr. Strigeus, present with me in their IRC channel, " you better pick the peeps you work for a littel better if you wanna make utorrent apps. its staying int"

Clearly BlueTack is not concerned about accuracy in any shape or form. A log of the discussion follows

[16:18.24] <+ludde> can you remove the silly PG2 "utorrent works for RetSpan" thing? I don't work for Retspan and I never will.
[16:30.45] <@fa> well, what is it that you are doing for them then?
[16:32.23] <@fa> or with them
[16:32.28] <+ludde> I'm providing a DLL file to PeerFactor, that they can use to download content through the BitTorrent protocol. It does not have any features for getting IPs or anything from users, it can only be used to download stuff.
[16:32.33] <+Benjones> I think thats been widely published everywhere
[16:32.50] <+ludde> exactly.
[16:33.56] <+Benjones> so, why was the block added?
[16:34.06] <+ludde> ignorance?
[16:34.32] <@fa> fuck you
[16:35.09] <@fa> you better pick the peeps you work for a littel better if you wanna make utorrent apps
[16:35.15] <@fa> its staying int
[16:36.24] <@fa> lol
[16:36.40] <+ludde> fa: utorrent is not related to anti-p2p. I don't see what the reason for the block is.
[16:37.10] <@fa> helping anti-p2p in any way is relating it to it
[16:37.43] <+ludde> I'm not helping anti-p2p. I'm helping a company (separate from retspan) that wants to provide a download service.
[16:37.45] <@fa> and yes, if you did the same for microsoft, you would have made the list as well
[16:38.00] <+ludde> so, microsoft is on the list?
[16:38.01] <@fa> staying in till the source is public
[16:38.27] <+ludde> that is not going to happen.
[16:39.23] <@fa> we have a list jsut for M$ yes
[16:39.46] <+ludde> fa: utorrent is not in any way related to anti-p2p. I'm just selling an "off the shelf" DLL product to PeerFactor, more or less.
[16:39.48] <@fa> they are the biggest anti-p2p organization
[16:40.23] <+ludde> this agreement is not about µTorrent.
[16:40.30] <+ludde> so I don't see why you punish utorrent.
[16:41.57] <+ludde> fa: can you remove the block please? If I was anti-p2p, I would never have created utorrent.
[16:42.32] <@fa> everyone should get to make the Decision for themselves, first they need to see that you have worked with them, then they can choose to use the app or not
[16:42.43] <@fa> the block is the best way atm to show peeps
[16:43.33] <+ludde> why put the decision on the people? They don't have enough information to tell what the deal is about. they just have the information provided by media, which is written in a way to generate attraction.
[16:44.25] <+ludde> this deal is really nothing, they contract doesn't even MENTION µTorrent.
[16:44.27] <@fa> the whole thing is dodgy as hell, they prolly needed that dll to build an anti-p2p torrent app, and you just handed it to them

Phrosty at Phoenix Labs was also present, and said "i don't think it utorrent.com should be blocked, but it's out of control of phoenix labs until we launch our own lists (soon)". As Ludde suggested, its clear that this is a decision made from ignorance. The value of these sorts of programs has never been proven either. Whilst protecting from overt lists might well keep you from the corporate networks, no-one rely on well known sources to search for copyright infringement. If you are relying on these lists to protect you from being found and prosecuted, you're investing in a false sense of security. Whilst they act on empty rumours and show little attention for the facts in compiling their lists, it leaves the question of just what value their lists are.

Can I recommend peerguardian? not until their blocklists are compiled by people who know what they're doing.
Knowledge is a process of pilling up facts; Wisdom lies in their simplification.....
Knowledge is learning something everyday; Wisdom is letting go of something everyday....

Hi,
Thanks for the great addon.

Do you know if there is a way to silently install utorrent?

I like it, but I don't want it auto-installed (aka addon pack) - I use a software selector.

Is there some kind of silent switch (like /S ?)

thanks/.

uTorrent doesn't have an installer, it comes as a standalone executable.

If you want to make it as a switchless installer then what you would need to do is to extract the contents of my cab file to a folder named "uTorrent", delete the uTorrent.lnk file and archive it into an sfx file using WinRAR or 7-zip making your own shortcuts for it.

Hope that helps.

Cheers

that as you put it, is a installer that does a few things that you yourself can do manually..
one it creates a folder in program files and extracts the uTorrent file there..
two it creates shortcuts.. and a few other things.. (it might make associations.. not sure)

the uTorrent file is one file.. put it where you want it... run it. and visit the menus in the program to make associations with torrent files.. all things that the installer can do for you (if you get lazy!)

Oh well, ya got me there. I never use installer versions of stuff if they have a portable version, so I guess I just don't notice such things ROFL :P

PS: And did you notice that I made an addon for XNView, cos I never noticed that you said thank-you ;)

(posted in wrong thread before)

The installer contains the language pack and well, an installer (and uninstaller and shortcuts, but that's a given). That's about it. It was provided as a slightly more newbie-friendly thing.

Mrs Peel: the langpack's been updated again :P

You should try out Filefront for your temporary storage, 1GB max filesize, no bandwidth limits, and the file lasts forever. You do have to register though, only drawback.

Invalid yousendit link.

You have email yourself and copy the link that yousendit sent.

Or use this service.

Oooops, my mouse musta picked up some text from the next line on the YSI pages. All fixed now.

There are only 25 clicks on each of those links peeps, so if the links are expired in a few hours I'll know that was 50 Lurking Leechers who never bothered said thanks to Firon. ;)

PS: Guys guys guys! I've tried nearly every free file storage place there is and only TWO of them work properly for me... and the other one everybody always moans about, so...... I actually prefer to use links that expire so there's not old versions of my addons still live on the net somewhere.

PPS: And anyhoo you should all just be grateful that I bothered to upload these temporary links instead of making you all have to wait till Ryan wakes up in the morning to get this updated version. You say the glass is half empty and I say the glass is half fill. I guess you just can't please everyone (((sigh))) it seems I better start using my old disclaimer again....

[disclaimer] Files will be relocated to permanent RyanVM hosting shortly. If this arrangement is unsuitable for you please email me here.

1.6 is actually slower than 1.5, I've found.

That's really sad. She's absolutely one of the most inspiring Addon maker on this board. :(

I've based most of my addons on what I call "Mrs Peel" "standard" to really make sure they work before releasing.

Yep, I also love MrsP spirit of adventure when it comes to addons.
It would be a real shame if she wouldn't come back to the forum :(.
But then again I'm already loving Foxy's work ;).
I can see that he really picked on MrsP footsteps :).
Go for it Aserone 8).
Rui

Yep, he's back for good :P.

Ahhhhhhhhh, but she's back now, and she's cranky so watch out ;)

Sorry guys been away on sick leave for a few months. I've already done an update for this but I'm trying to program in an uninstaller for it in this new release so I'm a bit stuck on that ATM. Four months since I made an addon so I'm waaaaaaaaaaay rusty.

Nice to know I was missed. Big hugs to my fan club :D

PS: Arserone, I need to get you on my IM list so you can help me out with this please

Updated.....

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE bother to read my new release notes - and especially the bit about the uninstaller not cleaning up properly if you have saved files to your program directory.

I don't know if I am going to bother maintaining this pack anymore until such time as I see where the development of this goes since Ludde sold out to a company that is anti-file sharing. Personally, I intend to stick with the old v1.5 build until my paranoia is allayed.

;)

PS: I've left the link to the old v1.5 package in place for those of you who are sceptical like me hehehehe
