Acrobat Reader 7.07 Addon Interest?

Post by heathy » Tue Mar 14, 2006 1:52 pm

I'm trying to see if there's any interest in an acrobat reader 7.07 addon pack. I'm about 90% done with the one I've been working on and I can go ahead and share it if there's interest. It is quite large even compressed which was my main concern with releasing it.

Naah, that's a Switchless Installer Addon Pack; this'd be a -true- addon pack, which IMO is always better. If bigger due to worse compression. I'd certainly be interested in this pack though :)

Yes this is an addon pack, not an installer. I think I'll have it done today or tomorrow.

I tried to make an addon of adobe acrobat before as well.

The thing is ... is you need to make your own uninstaller for it and get rid of the msi uninstaller it comes with. Because the msi uninstaller makes you have to pack un needed files with it.

Really? I haven't run into that. The uninstaller seems to remove everything. The only thing it does do is leave a couple empty folders which I think is the behavior of the Adobe installer more than my meddling. I also maintained the repair functionality of the installer. Was it the main Acrobat Reader.msi that you couldn't get rid of?

Ok I have an update on the pack. I think I'm almost done. I have it working as far as doing a right-click install, but I haven't tested an actual windows install. I'm doing that now and I'll check in on it in the morning if all goes well I'll post it tomorrow.

More info on the pack:

So the total pack size is 52MB. I did say it was quite large. This is mainly due to the repair function in Acrobat that requires a 25MB cab file to be present to copy files from. Maybe that's what Siginet was eluding to. So if you don't care about the repair function the addon could be modified down to about 27MB, which is "close" to the original size from Adobe. I'm sure someone smarter than me can get better compression. It installs acrobat in the same state the adobe installer does, it even asks for a user agreement on first launch.

That's all for now. I'm tired and going home.
