LOL. I'm actually in the process of making one. I will test it. I will keep you posted. I'm also gonna make a full tweak addon

What it will contain

Internet tweaks
Network tweaks
Windows media player tweaks
Windows Explorer tweaks
Speed & performace tweaks
Customisation tweaks
right click tweaks
Startup removal tweaks
Windows hidden tweaks
and some more.......

I will separate them as well. I will test mine soon as i can.

a nice addon would be one that takes a text or xml file as input and lets users setup the default XP services as they wish. Kind of a text version of the services panel in nlite.

Something like this would be 'universal' in that it could be used on all XP systems by all users.

Sorry guys, i have been working heaps the past couple of days. The addon will be complete by this Sunday.

I am testing it at the moment. I will probably need some people to test as well, once i have completed it. So many tweaks to check....lol.

Sorry for the delay. My work is pissing me off.LOL. I have done some testing.

I tested it and it worked fine with most of the tweaks. I am worried about the services though. I disabled some services.....and it caused a slow down in startup and shutdown. I have to pin the culprit and i will get back to you.

I did a system the other day with the tweak and it took 2 mins to shutdown. I set the services to windows default. and it shutdown in 10 secs.....lol. i also disabled a few of the common ones like wireless config, alert, indexing, clipbook and that seems to work well.

IT WILL BE SOON GUYS........

If it helps, this is a listing of services for non-domain (workgroup only) system installs that I do on a regular basis and have (yet) to have any detrimental side effects from in the year and a half I've been configuring it this way:

.NET Runtime Optimization Service v#.#.#####_x## : Manual
Alerter : Disabled
Application Layer Gateway Service : Disabled *
Application Management : Manual
ASP.NET State Service : Manual
Automatic Updates : Disabled
Background Intelligent Transfer Service : Manual
ClipBook : Disabled
COM+ Event Service : Manual (Starts)
COM+ System Application : Manual
Computer Browser : Manual
Cryptographic Services : Automatic (Starts)
DCOM Server Process Launcher : Automatic (Starts) <- Cannot safely change this one as no option to do so is available, outside of the registry. _HIGHLY_ recommended to leave at default.
DHCP Client : Automatic (Starts)
Distributed Link Tracking Client : Manual
Distributed Transaction Coordinator : Manual
DNS Client : Manual
Error Reporting Service : Disabled
Event Log : Automatic (Starts) <- Again, no option exists other than the registry to change the default on this one, I moderately_highly recommend leaving alone.
Fast User Switching Compatability : Manual
Help and Support : Disabled
HID Input Service : Automatic (Starts)
HTTP SSL : Manual
IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service : Manual <- Does not affect burning via 3rd party apps, only via the windows wizard dialogs, but I still don't set it to disabled. Just in case.
Indexing Service : Manual (Even though it's not installed via WINNT.SIF and not selected for any of the drives. I leave it at this as performance takes a dip if I set to disabled)
IPSEC Services : Manual *
Logical Disk Manager : Automatic (Starts)
Logical Disk Manager Admin Services : Manual
Messenger : Disabled
MS Software Shadow Copy Provider : Manual
Net Logon : Manual <- Not on a domain, not needed.
NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing : Disabled
Network Connections : Manual (Starts)
Network DDE : Disabled
Network DDE DSDM : Disabled
Network Location Awareness : Manual (Starts)
Network Provisioning Service : Manual
NT LM Security Support Provider : Manual
Performance Logs and Alerts : Manual
Plug and Pray : Automatic (Starts) <- Yet another one that doesn't have any options outside of the registry, (god, M$ loves that setting!) I personally have no desire to change it.
Portable Media Serial Number Service : Disabled <- Obviously I don't have one.
Print Spooler : Manual <- Don't have one of these either, but handy for PDF creation, turn on when needed, off otherwise.
Protected Storage : Automatic (Starts) <- Setting this to Disabled has given me problems, so I leave it alone.
QoS RSVP : Disabled (And Uninstalled from Network Properties, if it ever is to begin with.)
Ramote Access Auto Connection Manager : Manual
Remote Access Connection Manager : Manual
Remote Desktop Help Session Manager : Disabled
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) : Automatic (Starts) <- _HIGHLY-HIGHLY_ recommend not touching this one. In fact, I'm sure if you did, you'd best be ready to immediately re-install or have some other way of fixing it, because it will FUBAR everything in sight.
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator : Manual
Remote Registry : Disabled <- Depending on network security software, may need Manual or Automatic, otherwise off.
Removable Storage : Manual
Routing and Remote Access : Disabled <- Again, no domain, not necessary.
Secondary Logon : Manual
Security Accounts Manager : Automatic (Starts) <- Yet Another with no options.....Depends on your point of view, disabling means that permissions no longer work as expected and can introduce some instabilitites and problems running installs and/or applications that require them.
Security Center : Disabled *
Server : Automatic (Starts)
Shell Hardware Detection : Automatic (Starts) <- Unavoidable, really.
Smart Card: Manual
SSDP Discovery Service : Disabled
System Even Notification : Automatic (Starts)
System Restore Service : Disabled
Task Scheduler : Manual
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper : Manual
Telephony : Manual
Telnet : Disabled
Terminal Services : Manual (Starts) <- Disabling this introduces some interesting side effects. Like no longer knowing who is running what services in Task Manager, for starters. Applications that rely on knowing who's doing what for how many cookies will lose it if this isn't running and that's assuming you get to log in.
Themes : Automatic (Starts) <- Because I abhor WB and detest "Classic".
Uninterruptible Power Supply : Manual <- Unless you have one.
Universal Plung and Pray Device Host : Manual
Volume Shadow Copy : Manual
Web Client : Disabled
Windows Audio : Automatic (Starts) <- Sound _will_ still work for anything that goes to the hardware or actually detects/enumerates to the drivers, but really, why mess with this one?
Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing : Disabled *
Windows Image Acquisition : Manual <- I'm not always scanning or whatnot.
Windows Installer : Manual
Windows Management Instrumentation : Automatic (Starts) <- Unless you like programs telling you they can't run because you don't meet the requirements or don't have the right OS or any number of highly annoying problems, this one should be left running as it is.
Windows Management Instrumentation Driver Extensions : Manual
Windows Time : Disabled
Wireless Zero Configuration : Disabled
WMI Perofmance Adapter : Manual
Workstation : Automatic (Starts)

Note on the * entries: I proactively engage my own Firewall/ID&C and Monitoring solution. For those who don't do active port scanning, have filters in place on a router/hub (IP or MAC Address or otherwise), run a firewall other that the Windows Firewall as well as have an active AV Solution will want to set those options accordingly.

Also note that I have only listed here the basic windows services. There are application services that are also running (Example would be from ATI/nVidia drivers), those in some cases can be turned off unless you actively use Profile Management to enable pre-sets for specific games/apps.

Still, only 22 services set as running taking up 9 Processes (not counting explorer.exe, System and System Idle Process) is fairly tight. Commit Charge on windows boot up lists 58M / 2459M on a clean install of XP SP2 with the above settings made to the install source. Start Up and Shutdown are fast and tight (and rarely "degrade" over time unless I _really_ start adding on the "Run with Windows" applications) and as I mentioned above, I have yet to encounter any serious technical errors or problems with this configuration.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Zacam

Your list is great. Do you use nlite or a reg file. If you use a reg file, please post your tweaks for the above.

Image Wouldn't it be easier to disable these using [ExtraFileEdits] and txtsetpu.sif

Code: Select all

[NetServicesToDisable]
  Messenger
  Netlogon
  Alerter
  Afd
  Telnet
  DHCP
  NetDDE
  NetDDEdsdm
  ntcx
  ntxem
  ntxall
  ntepc
  DigiFEP5
  Pcimac
  CiFilter
  LicenseService
  RasAcd
  RasArp
  NdisTapi
  w3svc
  ftpsvc
  msftpsvc
  gophersvc
  raspptpf
  wuser32
If you want the internal names of the services (example: gophersvc) this addon by ENU_user has most of them http://www.ryanvm.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2325
