Thank you for making this thread.
What about making a frequently updated .reg file, so users could import it to their registry?

armond, you can make an inf file and add these in it. Then right click the file and choose install.
You can look this as reference: (created by Reg2Inf v0.37 - http://tinyurl.com/fgqyf)

Code: Select all

[Version]
Signature=$Windows NT$

[Optional Components]
MyRegTweaks

[DefaultInstall]
OptionDesc ="Registry Entries"
Tip        ="Registry Entries"
Modes      =0,1,2,3
AddReg     =REGEntries.AddReg

[MyRegTweaks]
OptionDesc ="Registry Entries"
Tip        ="Registry Entries"
Modes      =0,1,2,3
AddReg     =REGEntries.AddReg

[REGEntries.AddReg]
;Put the tweaks you want here.
Edit: Sorry Sanjay, you posted while i was typing. Can you please use code boxes? The page goes huge this way.
I will convert new entries you posted into inf format.
Thanks for sharing :P
Edit: Thanks for code boxes sanjay :wink:

Just wondering.. The REG file listed above in this topic appears to have a few keys & values that are specific to both Win 2K3, XP, XPSP2 (and also a few for 2K, I think). Would importing them cause any problems?

Here's one that's not listed yet.

Key to set IE7 cache update frequency.

Code: Select all

; Sets IE7 Cache Update to Every Time
;0 = Never

Disable IE7 on MU/WU:

Code: Select all

HKLM,"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Setup\7.0","DoNotAllowIE70",0x10001,1
This will remove IE7 from MU/WU.
1-2 months ago this key made IE7 an optional update. Now, its completely disappeared on MU.

Not directly related with IE7 but wanted to post this here too.

Disable the language bar:
First one will disable language bar, and second one will disable the prompt when you want to close lang bar.

Code: Select all

HKCU,"Software\Microsoft\CTF\LangBar","ShowStatus",0x10001,3
HKCU,"Software\Microsoft\CTF\MSUTB","DontShowCloseLangBarDlg",0x10001,1

How about this tweak:

Disable Microsoft Update asking to run Active X Control

Code: Select all

HKCU,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Stats\{6E32070A-766D-4EE6-879C-DC1FA91D2FC3}\iexplore","Flags",0x10001,4

Found it on MSFN at: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?sho ... t&p=596993

I assume if you don't actually have the latest activex control this may cause problems.

Anyone with more experience care to comment?

EDIT: changed code to INF format. Follow MSFN link for REG format.

Hi,

Would applying the above result in all ActiveX controls running automatically, without prompt? Or no ActiveX controls running at all?

Surely it has to be one or the other and the former is insecure while the latter is undesirable.

The Language Bar tweaks have nothing to do with ActiveX controls, just_laze. When active, it is located on the right side of the Taskbar next to the notification area and system clock. ;)

I quoted the wrong message, my point still stands and that is, will this tweak ONLY effect Windows Update and not result in any old website being able to run ActiveX controls without your permission.

I haven't tested it yet, but I believe it only applies to the Windows/Microsoft Update ActiveX control that is included in the RyanVM Update Pack. Other ActiveX controls should not be affected.

I didn't see it posted up above, so I'll ask: Is there a way to have the homepage set to google.com? I have the tweak for IE6 but am not sure if IE7 requires something different.

Hey,

You set the homepage in your answer file.

Having a registry tweak do it is inefficient, it may work, but it's an extension of an already working method, so why bother?

Actually, I've done some reading about IE7 Phishing function. If you disable it, your IE7 will run much faster.
Try it.

MS released a hotfix to deal with that issue, SoKoOLz. It has since been rolled into IE7 cumulative updates since KB928090.

Hi Guys, I just want to ask.

If i want to use .inf files, how should i intergrate the files to my windows automatically? Usually i just use .reg file and run under RunOnceEx.

Is there any tools to convert Inf to Reg?

Usually someone would say "Did you search for one?" But in this case, on the main Update Pack Addons page, ~15 posts below this thread is a post that says [Tool] Reg 2 Inf Converter. Really hard to miss, even if you're not looking for it. :)

To integrate an INF file, yadzil, you must add an entry to SYSOC.INF under the first [Components] section.

I think yadzil is looking for a utility that does the opposite, kelaniz. As in from INF to REG. I don't think n7Epsilon's utility can do that (yet :)).

You'll find it compressed as SYSOC.IN_ in I386.

There are a couple more edits you'll have to make to get it to work properly. It would be best to make an addon out of it using this code as your template for ENTRIES_TWEAKS.INI:

Code: Select all

[general]
builddate=2007/05/21
description=YOURDESCRIPTION
title=YOURTITLE
version=1.0

[sysoc]
YOURFILE=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,YOURFILE.INF,HIDE,7

[dosnet_files]
d1,YOURFILE.INF

[txtsetup_files]
YOURFILE.INF    = 100,,,,,,,20,0,0

[i386_compress]
rvmtemp\extracted\YOURFILE.INF

@5eraph

I tried creating an addon to integrate my reg tweaks in my install-one inf. nlite keeps kicking out the unsupported.... error. Below is the ini...what am I doing wrong? Both this ini and the inf are together in one folder compressed with MakeCab and is named PersonalRegFiles_Addon.cab.

8.3 filenames

You have to shorten your INF file name

8 letters for the name and 3 letters for the extention example 12345678.INF

Is there anyway that I can update the INF file directly in the addon? Everytime I try to do it in 7zip it keeps giving me an error of "Not Implemented"

I'd like to add the tweaks directly into the INF before I integrate.

Any ideas?

right-click the archive, select "extract to %foldername%"
edit the inf file.
In the folder you extracted to, type ctrl-a (select all), right-click ->7zip->Add to archive.
Max all settings, and compress.

Hey,

For this to be full-proof you must add it to all zones.

This would be a more effective tweak:

Code: Select all

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\0]
"2200"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\1]
"2200"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\2]
"2200"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\3]
"2200"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\4]
"2200"=dword:00000000
Thanks.

mr_smartepants,
With respect to your answer to Zoom7000 above, on June5, because I also had the same question:

Does it matter if I do all that extraction, addition, and recompression with WinRAR, since I don't use 7zip. Doing so, I wind up with an addon named NR_IE7en_Addon_1.0.6.rar, hoping that will work just as well as the original NR_IE7en_Addon_1.0.6.7z

I realize the compression is different, but I don't care about that as long as the addon works.

Your opinion, please. Other opinions also welcome.

For some other websites, they didn't know how to signed their ActiveX softwares. This tweak allows Unsigned ActiveX to be prompted before installing, without this tweak the ActiveX will always blocked.

Prompt For Installing Unsigned ActiveX

Hi, I would like to set ie proxy settings for my nlite install, does the following look correct?

Code: Select all

;Copy & Paste your IE7 tweaks here below.
[UserTweaks.AddReg]
HKCU,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings","ProxyEnable",0x00010001,0x00000001
HKCU,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,"ProxyServer",0x00000000,"10.35.72.22:8080"
HKCU,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings","ProxyOverride",0x00000000,"icswebserv;webserver;10.35.72.45;classserver;<local>"
...Thanks...

kujina, use this one. I just added one character.

Code: Select all

;Copy & Paste your IE7 tweaks here below.
[UserTweaks.AddReg]
HKCU,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings","ProxyEnable",0x00010001,0x00000001
HKCU,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings","ProxyServer",0x00000000,"10.35.72.22:8080"
HKCU,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings","ProxyOverride",0x00000000,"icswebserv;webserver;10.35.72.45;classserver;<local>"
This key will disable the "would you like to join customer experience program" question when you click on "Diagnose Network Problems" in tools menu:
HKCU,"Software\Microsoft\Network Diagnostic","SqmEnabled",0x10001,0
