Is there an update pack for MCE Update Rollup 2?

Post by Fygee » Tue Apr 03, 2007 10:31 pm

Been looking around and I haven't been able to find one, nor a solution to properly integrate it into MCE without messing up Media Player 11 during run-once (And vice versa when Media Player 11 is integrated). Can anyone help me out with this?

I got close to making a 'WPI addon', but I never got to the point of integrating Update Rollup 2 into the MEDIACTR folder, though very close:

alot of the rollup 2 hotfixes can be integrated via de /integrate command, but not all,in the end making silent installers is simpler till soem one take the time and really come up with a true addon pack.

It seems MEULC will come with a solution. (read here.)

Would it be possible to integrate update rollup 2 and windows media 11? If I integrated Windows Media 11 then UR2 won't install because it included an update for windows media 10.

Update Rollup 2 comes inside a package including other hotfixes that have nothing really to do with MCE.
Just extract KB900325.exe from WindowsXPMediaCenter2005-KB900325-usa.exe

See "What Update Rollup 2 for MCE 2005 setup does behind the scenes"
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/ ... 83678.aspx
* Windows hotfix KB903157 - this is a hotfix for Windows Media Player (wmp.dll) that fixes some bugs in Media Center-specific scenarios
* Windows hotfix KB891593 - this is a hotfix for DShow (quartz.dll and qdvd.dll) that fixes some bugs in Media Center-specific scenarios
* Windows hotfix KB895961 - this is a hotfix for termsrv.dll that fixes some bugs in Media Center Extender scenarios
* Windows hotfix KB899337 - this is a hotfix that updates the wireless networking control panel to allow joining wireless A/G networks
* Windows hotfix KB899510 - this is a driver update to support one of the types of DVD changers that Update Rollup 2 for MCE 2005 adds support for
* Windows hotfix KB888795 - this is an updated set of IR drivers (also previously released as a separate download and available for MCE 2004 and MCE 2005 without Update Rollup 2 installed)
* Windows hotfix KB902841 - this is a driver update to support another one of the types of DVD changers that Update Rollup 2 for MCE 2005 adds support for
* KB900325 - this is the main Update Rollup 2 package and contains all of the Media Center files that need to be updated
* New digital rights management (DRM) runtime package (wmfdist95.exe)
However these hotfixes are likely included in
October 2006 Update Rollup for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (KB925766)

BTW here are my two posts @ MSFN on how I've done it.
Here is my method of installing Media Center, Update Rollup 2, and the latest hotfix, using only .NET 1.1 SP1.
It must be installed in two steps, unless someone knows a way to integrate KB900325 into the MEDIACTR.CAB

NOTES:
  • Edit txtsetup.sif and dosnet.inf so windows does not copy the wpa key.
  • tell nLite to keep both dbgeng.dll and custsat.dll if you remove components.
  • extract MEDIACTR.CAB to a folder and put medctroc.inf inside it to avoid the cd prompt.
  • copy medctrro.exe from KB900325.exe to the MEDIACTR folder to avoid the registration error - it will look for the newer .NET 1.1 CasPol.exe :)
  • KB900325.exe is extracted from the Update Rollup 2 package. [Details]
  • The other hotfixes from the Update Rollup 2 package are optional and can be integrated (slipstreamed).
  • MCE does not require .NET 1.0 it will work fine with just .NET 1.1 as long as you install Update Rollup 2.
Part1.cmd

Code: Select all

REM .NET 1.1 + SP1 from RyanVM
dotnet11sp1.exe

REM WPA key (remove mce component with nlite)
REG ADD HKLM\SYSTEM\WPA\MediaCenter /v Installed /t REG_SZ /d 1 /f

REM MCE Setup.
rundll32.exe setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection Freestyle 128 MEDIACTR\medctroc.inf

shutdown.exe -r -f -t 0 -c "Rebooting"
Part2.cmd

Code: Select all

REM Update Rollup 2 (extracted from WindowsXPMediaCenter2005-KB900325-usa.exe)
KB900325.exe /quiet /norestart

REM October 2006 Update Rollup
WindowsXPMediaCenter2005-KB925766-ENU.exe /quiet /norestart

shutdown.exe -r -f -t 0 -c "Rebooting"
I have discovered something about the problem importing the WPA key.
On an vanilla install of xp sp2 this key already exists with a DWORD value of 0 and it cannot be modified.

Code: Select all

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\WPA\MediaCenter]
"Installed"="0"
In order to install Media Center we need to change that 0 into a 1. There are 3 ways of doing so:
1) Use BartPE to load the registry and change or create the key.
2) Use nLite and remove the MCE component. This is essentially the same as the next step.
3) Manually edit TXTSETUP.SIF and DOSNET.INF and disable the following lines using ";".

TXTSETUP.SIF

Code: Select all

[SourceDisksFiles]
;medctroc.dll = 100,,,,,,,32,0,0
;medctroc.inf = 100,,,,,,,20,0,0
;mediactr.cat = 100,,,,,,,,3,3
DOSNET.INF

Code: Select all

[Directories]
;d3 = \cmpnents\mediactr\I386

[Files]
;d1,medctroc.dll
;d1,medctroc.inf
;d1,mediactr.cat
The last two methods tell setup not to install those 3 files, and result in no WPA key being created in the registry.
We must then create the key, again 3 methods of doing so:
1)reg file

Code: Select all

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\WPA\MediaCenter]
"Installed"="1"
2)bat/cmd file

Code: Select all

REG ADD HKLM\SYSTEM\WPA\MediaCenter /v Installed /t REG_SZ /d 1 /f
3)using regedit

On reboot System Properties will now say Media Center Edition.

Thank you, DigeratiPrime, for those instructions. I've gotten the files ready to use the very next time I reinstall MCE 2005, which may be very soon. And anything I can do to avoid installing any versions of .NET that I don't need is a good thing!

The rest is for RyanVM or anyone who is knowledgeable concerning KB891593.

 Dang it, I just wrote a long message and now it's lost. And you know, I had considered copying the entire message to the clipboard before I hit submit. Oh well...

The short version. I've researched and searched relatively extensively and was just wondering about the KB891593 fix contained within the MCE 2005 Update Rollup 2 (WindowsXPMediaCenter2005-KB900325-usa). It isn't an MCE-specific update, it's "FIX: Updates to address Direct Show playback performance issues in Windows XP SP2".

In the post-SP2 update archived changelog, v1.3.0 mentions that KB891593 was added. This version was unreleased but presumably KB891593 was still contained within 1.3.1 which was released.

Being that 1.3.1 was the last 1.x version before the jump to 2.0.0, and that 2.0.0 says among other things "Built over from scratch with an emphasis on removing hotfixes that caused more problems than they solved", I was wondering if this was the very reason why KB891593 or a superseded version no longer appear to be included in the update pack.

FYI for anyone who doesn't know and wonders, all the other updates contained within Update Rollup 2 have been superseded and those new versions ARE still contained in the update pack, or at least they were as of v2.1.4 when I did a detailed comparison.

I figure that if KB891593 didn't pass RyanVM's inspection then I would probably not bother to integrate it myself on my next MCE 2005 installation.

Thanks much!

*bump*

I since reinstalled MCE and DigeratiPrime's instructions worked great. Only one weird thing. Once I went to Microsoft Update to make sure I had everything, it listed KB908250 - Update Rollup for MCE 2005 Update Rollup 2, which is older than KB925766 and Microsoft's articles says that they're cumulative. I confirmed that KB925766 was already installed prior to Microsoft Update, and I also confirmed that once I was done with MU that KB908250 was installed.

FYI, KB891593 is long-superseded by the Update Pack (look at the file versions of qdvd.dll and quartz.dll)
