Something appears to have gone wrong with your integration. That update is included with the current version of this addon (v2010-12_1). The Microsoft Update website and Belarc Advisor v8.1p (security definition v2011.1.11.11) both report as up to date (tested integrations using RVMi and nLite). Check "Add or Remove Programs" for the addon version you have used, then check SetupErr.log in %SystemRoot% for possible problems.

That update will be obsolete in roughly four days, however, when Microsoft releases the next IE cumulative updates. ;)

Updated to 2012-02_1. Please read the Changelog for more details.

The following files and their WoW64 equivalents from the IE6 cumulative update have been added to the updated addon to replace almost all of the SP1 files included in the original installer. This was done for completeness as well as to include the fix for the functionality described in KB972582. The inclusion of these files has been tested off and on for over a year with no ill effects. Please let me know if you have any difficulties.
browseui.dll ..- Replaces SP1 file included in original installer.
ieencode.dll ..- Not included with IE8 but added as part of the IE6 cumulative update.
    mshtml6.dll ...- Replaces original IE6 file used until T-13. Original filename: mshtml.dll
    pngfilt6.dll .....- Replaces original IE6 file used until T-13. Original filename: pngfilt.dll
shdocvw.dll ...- Replaces SP1 file included in original installer.
w03a3409.dll - Not included with IE8 and not an IE6 file but the IE6 update usually has and needs the latest version.
The SP1 file shlwapi.dll and its WoW64 equivalent are included in the original installer but are not actually IE files. They are still not included in either addon. The latest version can be found in security update KB975713 which is included in the update pack.

Many thanks for your work!

Any chance of a Dot net 3.5/4 addon?

You're welcome. :)

Sorry, but no chance on dotNET. The cost to benefit ratio is too high for me; I don't use it often enough. Kurt_Aust has a solution involving scripts that you may be interested in.

Hi 5eraph

How did you integrate KB2598845 and other Compatibility View list updates into your IE8 addon?

The last Compatibility View list update (for XP x64) I can find in Microsoft website is KB982664. So where did you get KB2598845 and integrate it?

Thank you.

I had a similar question concerning a previous Compatibility View list update that was never offered for Windows XP x64. Used the Vista x64 update package with the tools suggested to extract the needed files from the package.

I've since written my own CMD script to extract and sort the files in an MSU, but it requires Expand from Win7 and SignTool to function under XP.

Once the files were extracted (IECompat.dll, wIECompat.dll and "package_1_for_kb2598845_bf~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~8.0.1.0.cat"), it was just a matter of renaming the catalog file and adding the three files to the IE8 Addon. I also added registry entries to allow QFECheck to verify the slipstreamed update on a running system. The entries can be found in the [KB2598845-IE8.AddReg] section of 5erIE8.inf.

So generally you get the iecompat.dll and wiecompat.dll from the Vista update package.

This is really strange to me. For KB982664, there are a few byte differences when comparing the iecompat.dll from Vista and from XP.

(Compare result)

Code: Select all

Comparing IE8-WINDOWSXP-KB2598845-X86-ENU.EXE-DIR\SP3QFE\iecompat.dll and IE8-WINDOWS6.0-KB982664-X86.MSU-DIR\X86_MICROSOFT-WINDOWS-IE-IECOMPAT_31BF3856AD364E35_8.0.6001.23039_NONE_844AB3E55FE5699D\IECOMPAT.DLL
000000B8: 83 53
000000B9: B0 EA
000000BA: 19 22
00000108: 15 F4
00000109: 88 C1
00000304: FD FF
0000030C: FD FF
00000464: 37 39
00000494: 31 32
00000496: 36 33
00000638: 37 39

But for KB2598845, the x86 version of iecompat.dll is bit-for-bit identical between Vista version and XP one.

What was Microsoft doing here? Are they trying to unify the DLLs? I hope someone knows the answer.

You'll find minimal differences between the IE8 binaries for XP and Vista releases. But in XP you will find a file named XPShims.dll, which leads me to believe that IE8 was not originally written for XP. Microsoft has this to say about software shims:

Microsoft wrote:As the Windows operating system evolves from version to version—changing to support new technology, incorporate bug fixes, and implement a modification in strategy—changes to the implementation of some functions may affect applications that depend on them.[...]

[The Shim Infrastructure] leverages the nature of linking to redirect API calls from Windows itself to alternative code—the shim itself.

It seems that somebody is hotlinking my files on other sites and gathering the wrong sort of attention. Until I can clear this up, please use the SkyDrive mirror to retrieve update pack and IE8 addon related files.

Thanks for the good work you are doing here.
One small issue is there any chance you take with IE8MUI-x64-enu in the next update?
Would be grateful if it could be done.
Thanks in advance.

The IE8 Multilingual User Interface package does not replace any operating system or Internet Explorer files. Also, many people don't need it—myself included. It seems best for those that require it to add the standard installer to SVCPACK and execute it at T-13 using either "/q /z" or "/u /z" as installation switches. The following addon for RVMi and nLite will do this for you.
