Should I continue development of thr RVM Integrator? Requests?

Post by Siginet » Fri Oct 11, 2013 5:02 pm

OK... it's been many years since I've worked on a new version of the RVM Integrator. But I think it would be great to get back to work on it.

So I wanted to ask a few questions...

1. What new feature requests does everyone have for a new Integrator?

2. Are there some known bugs that should be fixed?

3. Is there anyone that would like to help with the development?

Looking forward to getting back into coding for the RVM Integrator!!!

That's great news, Siginet. Do you have the latest source code from 5eraph? Or you had it too?

Before working on a new (beta) version, I would suggest you to make a final release from the latest build, just by updating 7zip to 9.20. This will create even more rumor, news and people will respond accordingly.

Thank you !

No I do not have the latest source. :( Hopefully we can find that. If not.... I need to see if I can find a way to fix the old forum so I can download it. It was posted as an attachment in the old developers forum.

Yes I understand support ends soon for XP. We have to admit... it had a long run though. ;)

I know there isn't much we can do to improve rvm integrator though. It was pretty close to perfect since our development team was so good. ;)

But with some help... I'm sure we could finally make it compatible with more OSes. ;)

Would be nice if the RVMi limitation bug could be fixed. :)

Been running v1.6.1 beta 2.1 for years - have been very satisfied with the results on XP and XP x64.

RyanVM Integrator - things I'd like to see:

Advanced tab > Run a Program After Integration - presently only one program can be selected and used here - I have used the WMP11 Slipstreamer or the Driver Packs Integrator (DPs_BASE.exe) - would enhance things if more than one program could be selected; keeping in mind the the Driver Packs Integrator must be last.

Make ISO tab - an ISO can only be made if the RyanVM Integrator is running in a 32bit operating system - it's been my experience it fails if RyanVMi has been invoked from a 64bit operating system (XP Pro x64 or Win7 Ultimate x64).

I'm assuming here there is no 64bit version of the ISO Tools that could be included in RyanVMi for use in a 64bit environment. (Have not checked on the availability of a 64bit version - assuming one exists and could be selected as an External Tool.)

Make ISO works for me with default settings in XPx64, ChiefZeke. Your INI and LOG files would prove to be enlightening.

5eraph;

XP Pro x64 w/SP2 > RVM Integrator 1.6.1b2.1 > ISO not made, though the LOG files says it was. I did a check and the file: rvmisofs.exe was in both the \System32 folder and the \SysWOW64 folder. (The J:\Windows\Take Command\TCC.exe shown is a replacement Command Processor - a product of the people that created 4DOS back in the 'old' days.) It has been my experience that if I re-do this integation from with XP Pro x86 w/SP3 the ISO gets made with no problems.

Sorry for the delay. Lost track of this thread.

Duplicated your paths assuming drive W: is a mapped network share and created an ISO using your INI. No problems. The only differences are the change of C: for J: as the system drive and "Take Command\TCC.exe" in the command line.
16:23:14 - Command Line = C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe /c C:\WINDOWS\System32\rvmisofs.exe -joliet-long -iso-level 2 -N -d -relaxed-filenames -duplicates-once -D -boot-load-seg 0x7C0 -boot-load-size 4 -o "W:\XPProx64ISO\XPProx64SP2Integ.iso" -b rvmintegrator.img -hide rvmintegrator.img -hide boot.catalog -J -hide-joliet xpboot.img -hide-joliet boot.catalog -no-emul-boot -volid "XPProx64SP2WMP11Integ" -sysid "Win32" "W:\XPProx64Integrated"
You could try one of the following workarounds:
  • Disable TCC.exe temporarily so it doesn't hijack calls to CMD.exe. Changing the ComSpec environment variable to "J:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe" may be an easy way to accomplish this. (Control Panel\System\Advanced\Environment Variables)
  • Copy rvmisofs.exe to W:\ or anywhere outside of the Windows folder, and select "Use External Tool" in the "Make ISO" tab of RVMi. Then enter the new path to rvmisofs.exe there.

Sorry for the OT 5eraph/Chief, but 5eraph's comment about losing track of this thread brought something to mind about this forum in comparison to Wincert, MSFN, and other forums I participate in.

This forum is able to show "new posts since you last visited", and I use that way to enter the forum almost exclusively, ie "View posts since last visit". But then that list will get updated every so often so the next time you visit that list now again just shows the "new posts since you last visited", regardless if you actually had ever looked at the previous posts or not. The other forums are able to show "recent" posts or threads that have had activity over a selectable time frame, with the threads you haven't looked at highlighted in some way. Can that type of feature be added to this forum? If so it would make it a heck of a lot easier to find threads that you know had activity in the last week or so for example, without having to use the search funtion or manually look through the forum index for last posted dates. Just a suggestion.

OK, back on topic now. Carry on.

Cheers and Regards

always have fond memories of the RVM Integrator but honestly i think the XP ship has sailed. I'm not sure what could be added to it that isn't already there.

ps. bphlpt i had 1886 in my view posts since last visit :P

Make ISO tab - an ISO can only be made if the RyanVM Integrator is running in a 32bit operating system - it's been my experience it fails if RyanVMi has been invoked from a 64bit operating system (XP Pro x64 or Win7 Ultimate x64).
I'm using RVMi on Windows 7 x64 without problems.

Make ISO works OK, but only when it is run as administrator.

ISO can be made with other tools anyway.

Looks like this has become a forgotten issue for the original poster.

Not forgotten. I have begun working on the next release. ;)

I've fixed a few minor bugs and I have been working on the Limitation fix as well. ;)

I was chatting with our good friend OnePiece and we may just re-write a completely new integrator. One that will work with all versions of windows. An AiO integrator! I think with code from RVMi and OnePiece's True Integrator it wouldn't be very difficult. Plus it would make for an awesome project!!

I will make a thread on my forum to discuss it further in more detail and everyone will be able to throw their ideas into the mix as well. :)

It would be great to get my buddy RyanVM on board to help with some ideas as well!!! It's been a long time since we worked together!

For a truly AIO integrator you could also fold in any good features and abilities that HFSlip might have. And since nuhi is back on the scene, and is also rumored to be working on an updated tool himself, it might be worth getting in touch with him as well. :)

Other related tools that might be worth looking at for ideas are Win Toolkit, Windows Hotfix Downloader, Windows-Update-Checker KUC, Se7en_UA, 7Customizer, and I know there are others as well. And that's not to mention the installation tools such as PowerPacker, WinNTSetup, WinSetupFromUSB, Easy2Boot, etc, because IMO obtaining the OS updates, integrating or installing them, customizing the OS, creating the OS install medium, then installing the OS from that medium are all interrelated enough so that combining them might make make some sense.

I think it's about time that there is some cooperation between some of the tool makers. I understand there is also some cooperation occurring regarding some of the hotfix lists so that only an index is maintained, I believe in XML format, and the hotfixes are then downloaded by each user directly from MS, unpacked and then kept locally on each user's system to then be installed or integrated as appropriate by tools such as Win Toolkit or Windows Hotfix Downloader, kind of similar to the way that AutoPatcher turned out. Anyway, I think this type of unification will be good for the community and will end up being less likely to lead to the type of developer burnout that has repeatedly happened for the one-man tools when they get fed up with lack of support and constant demands on their time.

Here's hoping that it all works out!

Cheers and Regards

@bphlpt - I know that I am an average user and would just like something simple to update my windows 7 sp1 iso so I can get a better installation disc. I have found tutorials online for doing these things but most are buggy or far more advanced than I can handle. With that said. I agree with you very much so. It's not as simple as we would like it to be though as many people move on or sometimes don't get along and have many things going on in there personal lives but even if a small percent of the devs out there combined efforts it would be so much better.

If all the devs of "integrators" (nuhi, ryanvm, siginet, onepiece, legolash2o... sorry for those I forgotten) could make a team, we would have the ultimate tool! But I'm probably dreaming....

@bphlpt: dont forget Windows Updates Downloader, already based on xml lists to download updates from MS servers (or elsewhere).

steven4554 at msfn and mdl share some updates lists for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 RTM.

Also gillesg at wincert share his own update list for Windows 7 SP1 x64 based on my update pack.

I also think it is the future for "update packs".
