I removed a patch applied because it failed. iI'm close to the solution however.

UPDATE: The K.N related functions are there to allow upgrading to K, N versions only if you have these versions previously installed. This redundant check is removed by the patch I applied.

Other than it makes sense to do so bc its microsoft and had to be done anyway but ie8 is pretty much obsolete and no longer secured anymore since it can't go ie9 bc of xp. to me, in a way its stupid, heh, just the way the xp OS is.

but now a days its different broswers from chrome, fire fox, Opera, safari are the main ones that stays secures that people mostly use now, definitely on XP

I do understand that IE8 is considered "obsolete", but I still enjoy using it as my main browser (with Firefox as backup). Some day I may have to abandone it, but as long as there are talented people like harkaz to help keep it secure, I'll continue to put up with the website notices that proclaim "Your browser is no longer supported, please use a modern browser". Think of it like this. There are plenty of folks who love to keep and drive old cars even when getting parts become more and more difficult. But they still do it for many reasons. And they depend on the skills of others to maintain those vehicles. I am happy with Windows XP and I'm happy with Internet Explorer 8. I have good firewall, anti-malware and anti-virus programs. And, I have my drive backed up on an external drive. So I'm comfortable with using XP and IE8 for the forseeable future. It's a real bonus when I see that harkaz has posted an update ported over from POSReady and tweaked so I can update my system. To each his own, as "they" say.

True there, wasn't going for an argument btw, mostly opinion n such, I still use ie8 time to time but with the constant pages that i go to have are hurtful ads n danger sites which i can block with 1 or 2 plugins i do in safari n chrome. haven't seen really good ones for ie.

sometimes I use Wonder Time Freeze 2 i got for free limited time, now theres 2.0.3. to keep my pc safe from viruses or changes I'm doing that may go wrong, lol

The IE8/XP update was successfully installed.
Users of Symantec products will need to disable them completely prior to updating IE8, otherwise you'll get a BSOD and have to start over.
If only MS would see the wisdom of at least continuing security support for Internet Explorer 8. Still used by a lot of people and corporations, especially in China.

A first test on Windows 98 to Windows XP upgrade run today has shown that dosnet/txtsetup files need to reference files in the same order. This means that some additional changes are required to be made in the setup files before a stable build is released.

PS I have been contacted by a security expert who has suggested changing some registry keys to enhance Windows security. These changes will be incorporated in the final version as well.

UPDATE: I will update the w95upg.inf file to backup/remove some additional files for .NET Framework, MSXML4, WMP11, IE8, etc. Although I know that nobody uses the Windows XP Uninstaller after a 9x-to-XP upgrade. :p

Does that include anything that nLite doesn't have in its options already?

These registry changes are not included in any nLite option or any update pack. There are a few hundreds of registry keys which address issues not fixed by Microsoft security patches. I cannot publish the list of those keys here, but they will be part of Windows Xp sp4 rc version.

Wow - that means SP4 will become a must, unless those registry changes trickle down to other update packs or tools as options, but even that could take quite a while ...

Thank you for the uSP4! Even in beta, it's very helpful. I am having one issue though...

I can slipstream uSP4 into XPSP3, and make a bootable ISO which works great as a boot device for a VM or when burned to CD. If I take that same ISO and use Rufus to make a bootable USB drive however, it looks like it will work loading drivers and such until the bottom of the screen says "Setup is starting Windows." At that point I get a bluescreen. This occurs on multiple machines and with multiple flash drives.

Does anyone know if this is a problem with uSP4 or with something I am doing wrong? Any suggestions?

I will test Rufus with XP SP4 later.

@Everyone: It would be great if you contributed creating a list of programs designed to build USB Flash for XP installation. I am very busy with many things so that would be great. I plan to test XP SP4 USB installations with all these programs.

Thats wonderful that a few or some security experts have taken a notice to this Windows XP SP4 Project and willing to help on making this one of the greatest Special Packs of all time that Microsoft will never do. Thank you for keeping them secret bc by all those hackers want to install bogus spyware, virus's to pc's.

This is really A Dream Come True! Wouldn't even care if this doesn't finish by this xmas, lol, we be the better ones with all those payed 3rd party updates for XP. .. awe-nestly, they expect us to pay $20-$30 to keep our systems updated for a certain mount of days? wouldn't mind time to time donate to you man by making this and if not any future updates after the main releases.

...I should have known to do a search @ MSFN.

1) I had deleted the svcpack folder...
2) ...but didn't think to delete the references to "KBnnnnnn" ... a search of my SP2 CD i386 showed no other references to "KBnnnnnn" or "Qnnnnnn" other than the svcpack folder itself, which we deleted in step 1) I found no reference to Qnnnnnn.
3) There were but 2 KBnnnnnn's referenced in both the svcpack folder & svcpack.inf: KB912812 & KB839210... 1 .EXE & 1.CAT for each KB for a total of 4.
4) I'm afraid your reference to "makecab" is above my paygrade... I'm just an average user NOOB with a lot of time on my hands lol. I'll hit Teh Google to find out how-to but any guidance from you or any other RyanVM member Guru's would be accepted most appreciatively.

@Din5dale: Seems like the known Adobe Flash autoupdate installation issue. You can ignore it without problems. The issue will be fixed in the next version.

@teknowledgist Usually this error is caused by lack of SATA/RAID drivers for your storage controller. It's interesting though that you don't have the issue with CD-ROM installation. Let me clarify something: have you tested USB installation on real hardware or in VM?

My successful (and only) VM test was emulating a CD.

I have successfully installed XPuSP4 to a Dell Optiplex GX620 using a burned CD.

I was unsuccessful with two USB flash drives on the same GX620 (SATA in "normal" mode -- as opposed to "compbination" mode for "older" operating systems). I was also unsuccessful with the flash drives on a Dell Optiplex 760 (SATA in AHCI mode).

I just now tried the same flash drive on an Optiplex 9020 (SATA in RAID mode)... and it worked!! (Of course, I don't want XP on a machine that new.)

So, I haven't the foggiest idea what is going on, but I'm willing to test some things out when I have time.

More Data:

I found an old Dell Optiplex GX260 lying around, so I tried one of my SPuSP4 USB flash drive on it, and I again got the BSOD with the same 0x7b error.

The CD version works fine on the GX260. (I didn't actually complete the install, but it appears to be functional -- no crashes.)

I noticed that SP3 winnt32a.dll causes some additional issues during Windows 9x to XP upgrade. Working on them right now.

UPDATE: A bunch of issues has been fixed.
Trying to fix some other glitches...

ps. I don't remember much of powershell, since I semi used it when it was first announced, its already integrated sp1,2,3, and seems to use for windows framework, would that be part of it as well for being integrated in the beta too? (KB968930)

Since my XP versions I had my pc was for crap probably got infected by a
virus, I just recently go this yesterday in the mail off of ebay brand new and
sealed since Dell won't send me my disk bc windows dropped support (fu dell).

I put a blank drive drive and just installed from the cd to test it out,
then installed sp4 exe, then windows update.

Next thing I'ma gonna do is test sp4 ingrate with this cd.

First of all, tell me if this command completes successfully when you execute it manually.

after makn a user name and does the rest of the installation before I'm login, I get an error (that somehow I guess during using nlight) that it doesn't detect my ROM anymore, I repute my original CD in and doesn't detect either. I know my sound works by also integrating my drivers to it too, but unable to get task manager cmd explorer.exe working w/o rebooting the pc.

Had this problem once but thought it was something i did wrong with my friend iso he gave me.

wondering if it work using a USB drive next but can't do that today.

ps, after turning off by power button and back on, about 8 errors or so about dell found that it does have list my rom but why now and not then, not sure. but showing nothing in the rom thou, other than viewing the icons and part of the start up is messed up, like half corrupted like no iexplorer, icons blue on desktop

Probably it needs to install some Dell-provided apps at first boot.

Already passed it, errors i think are due to not reading my rom to continue the installation for dell stuff, classic windows theme came up n computer shows theres a rom but seeing a blank disk. I'll make a quick vid installn to desktop

@Anthony21 I'm downlaoding a Dell 2005 ISO to take a look.
Since it's a CDROM recognition issue - probably related to a bug in SP4 with Sonic DVD installation - try deleting the following registry keys:

HKLM, "SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}", "Lowerfilters"
HKLM, "SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}", "Upperfilters"

Then reboot and retry.

@Anthony21 I slipstreamed Beta 3 to a Dell MCE2005 CD and tested.

CD-ROM drive is fully recognised in VBox. Right now it's installing the apps...

UPDATE: Ahh.. it won't finish installing the apps because I have changed the \DOTNETFX folder's contents. In order to make it work copy the SP2's DOTNETFX folder contents to the new CD.

An interesting "flaw" which will be taken care of in the next release.

Still, I need to know what caused the CD-ROM issue in your case.

when i tried again one more time to see if i can re create those 8 errors or so, somthn change and idk what, maybe bc i shut the system by the button bc the 2nd time i did it, the outcome came a little different with the media theme and the icons weren't blue. so ok, good for that but still with the rom problem.

Two more changes for the next build:

1. .NET Framework 4.0 will be disabled by default (for performance reasons).
2. Windows Powershell 2.0 will be included but it will be disabled by default. Remember that Powershell is not compatible with Windows Xp upgrade; if it's enabled in SP4 you'll need to uninstall it from Add/Remove Components before trying an in-place upgrade (aka repair) install.

tried on our original rom that came with the system I plugin which no longer really worked, installed windows setup n now just won't pass the boot screen. everything looks ok when i vmware'd it on my mac except this error code, not sure if you saw this error or not.

n besides that dotnet ndpsp.exe error. after that on vm, no errors afterwards.

ran that cmd code, not sure it was successful or not since nothin happen after 'ok'.

ima run usb test next.

update usb: scratch that, used rufus of the same iso i made for the cd off my portable drive into 8GB flash drive, starts up windows xp setup and runs into 0x0000007B

@Anthony21 The .net fw installer -related error I get is not a disk not found message but everything seems to halt at boot screen. I closed some background windows to get past it. I'll try to fix this after I'm back from vacation, in about 20 days.

Because I will be away from my system for the next 20 days, I won't be able to build the ported-to-XP August 2014 updates in time. I'll try to keep up with the latest posts and news via mobile.

After vacation I'll have 1+ month with (supposedly) enough free time to create a stable build.

Being in my mid-60's I feel I'm losing my edge, if I ever had one ever. It makes me even more of an end-user than I've been since the early 80's as far as computers and electronics go. Using Ryanvm driverpacks and nlite, I slipstreamed my install of Xp3 7 to 10 years ago. It was challenging then and I think it would possibly be more challenging now to this up and coming dottering old fool. This is the reason I prefer your update packs over having to slipstream updates all over again. I want to thank you for your hard work.

I just want to let you know that for me, WindowsXP-USP4-Beta2-x86-ENU works, but the Beta 3 would not boot. I installed it over Beta 2. After reinstalling my old slipstreamed XP I tried Beta 3 without having installed Beta 2. It still would not boot. So I reinstalled my XP again and successfully used Beta 2 once again. Xp is now running Internet explorer 8. I might run your downloadable updates: WindowsXP-KB2939576-x86-ENU.exe, WindowsXP-KB2957503-x86-ENU.exe, WindowsXP-KB2957509-x86-ENU.exe, WindowsXP-KB2957689-IE8-x86-ENU.exe, WindowsXP-KB2961072-x86-ENU.EXE, WindowsXP-KB2962872-IE8-x86-ENU.EXE.
