Everything I've managed to recover seems to be in order for the most part, but I have run into a corrupt file or two. I'm going to have to make 100% sure that nothing important is corrupted, but things look very good :)

Also, I'm going to be burning a lot of DVDs tomorrow (the external hard drive I bought isn't working right...go figure), so I make no promises on when the next pack will come out. All I can say for sure is that things just got a heck of a lot easier for me to get back in the game :).

Ryan
A valuable lession has been learnt by yourself and other members of this board ....to make regular back ups! However good to see the members stepped up to the plate while you were out of the picture, resolved problems, a carry-over update pack for Dec/Jan etc. Anyway a carry-over update pack for tomorrows releases could be on the cards.
So take your time, studies first, sort out computer comes second, offical update pack next.
Should say wife first, studies second, etc shouldn't I.

File Scavenger 3.0, the right combination of hard drives, and pure dumb luck.

And I've already run into a few randomly corrupt files from the update pack (different MD5 hashes and such), so needless to say I'm going to be thoroughly testing this stuff to verify file integrity before publicly releasing anything.

ah cool :)

also, another REALLY good way of backing stuff up..

go into Regional and Language options. change the date seperator to "-" -never found any adverse affects to this..

then create a bat file that does the following..

md x:\backups\%date%
xcopy /e/h/y y:\files* x:\backups\%date%

either run this file yourself, set it to run everyday using scheduled tasks (daily) or in your 'startup' folder :)

use it in work to backup the most important files that are most likely to get corrupt by all the users, but i use the %time% one too then

have a play!

robocopy is also awsome, but not for a project type backup -as this is, robocopy is better for updating an mp3 collection backup, where files don't get modified :)

I'm a Second Copy fan myself :)

And I'm almost done recovering/sorting through all my stuff (a few corrupted MP3s here and there, but all in all not too bad) and getting it all burned to DVD. I know I've said this before, but I think this weekend I'll be able to update and test the update pack. As of now, I'm not even certain if my Windows ISOs are unharmed.

There haven't been any patches since his last version. 2.0.1 is a stable release. What patches are you reffering to? The only patch... which is not even a patch... it's just an addon update is my JAN102006 addon. Which adds hotfixeses that were released after the 2.0.1 updatepack.

I believe hajj_3 was referring to the Windows hotfixes as "patches". Just a simple mistake in terminology.

Excellent job on the recovery, i know how hard it is to recover from a crashed raid..... I've had to do many, biggest was a 2 Terabyte.. Ouch.

Try Syncbackupse instead of Second Copy.... I really recommend it

Lets all donate to the ryan fund so he can get rid of the RAID and go for a 3rd gen Raptor.

Those 3rd Gen 150GB Raptors do look decent, but I'll stick with my Hitachi 120GB SATA 1st gen drives for the time being. When I upgrade again, I'll go with the current gen Hitachi's again or Seagate's for stability. Which is something I require over sheer power, sure the spindle speeds are noteworthy, but stability and longivity is most important to me.

While the goodness of a 150GB raptor sounds nice, my 74GB is purring along just fine :P. And as was previously discussed, I've got a new strategy now ;)

Now that's what works for me, Raid seems like a good idea but i've seen too many go down and data lost that should have been safe to recommend them. I always use individual hard drive (SATA or SCSI) with clone or data backup to 2nd hard drive and 3rd network or ext USB Hard drive if data is that important....
