Croc Hunter Dead

Post by Aussie » Mon Sep 04, 2006 4:41 am

For those in the US and elsewhere where Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin was well known..... he was killed today by a stingray barb that pierced his chest / heart while he was diving filming a documentary in north Queensland, Australia. He was a typical Australian larrikin.

He was a hero of mine for a long time, such a sad loss to conservation around the world, though his lagacy will live on!

Not only is it a tragic loss for his family, but also for wildlife and the environment. He did a lot of work that did not receive the same amount of recognition as his TV appearances, but were extremely giving and selfless. I for one, am going to miss him and his influence a lot.

OMG he was filming a kids show with his 8 year old daughter... Fortunately she was not present at the time.

Its the first fatality caused by a stingray in Autralia.

I was genuinly shocked when this came on the news this mourning, his roar passion for animals and conservation spilled out from the screen and he seened like a crackin fella too. A trully tragic loss.

My thoughts go out to his friends and family.

Rest in peace.

His memorial service was broadcast this morning across the world from Australia Zoo, It was way too short to encapsulate all his well doings in regard to environmental and animal conservation aspects (like most of his money earned from Discovery channel etc was put back into the zoo, funded an animal hospital, & brought up chunks of land all over the place to conserve it forever). Yet most of the testimonials from influent people just crapped on how much their children loved him...what he meant to them, yet they said nothing on how they would help or aid in keeping his dream / legacy alive and conserve the environment for future generations (hypocrites). Anyway the world has truly lost one of the good guys.

At least it wasn't anti irvine.

I read an article recently in a UK newpaper stating he 'antagonised animals for viewing pleasure, teased and hurt them to show reaction and keeps hundreds of animals captive in cages in a zoo yet calls himself a conservationist.'

Someone did write back and said 'BTW if he didn't have the zoo, the animals would all be dead. He saved thoes animals from life threatening situations and reared them back to health in the zoo.'

I heard the stock in his Sunblock company plumetted. It turns out it didn't protect from harmful rays.

Seriously though, he died the way he lived...with wildlife in his heart.

Nothing wrong with that.

Don't stop now, fearphage, you're on a roll.

Seriously though, the man was fearless, intelligent, and entertaining. I rarely watch television yet I knew of him. He will be well remembered by many.

Thats a wierd way to put it ... (Being that a stingray stabbed him in the heart :?)

But I agree with you fearphage, he did love animals and would have given his life to save one.
