DirectX 10 Ported to XP

Post by ricktendo64 » Thu Apr 19, 2007 1:28 pm

Finally making use of this blog I created almost a year ago. What a busy year it's turned out to be, from the inception of the Alky Project to the creation of Falling Leaf Systems and the Sapling Program.

As a fitting start to this blog, I'm proud to release a preview of our DirectX 10 compatibility libraries. These libraries allow the use of DirectX 10 games on platforms other than Microsoft Vista, and increase hardware compatibility even on Vista, by compiling Geometry Shaders down to native machine code for execution where hardware isn't capable of running it. No longer will you have to upgrade your OS and video card(s) to play the latest games.

The current preview allows you to run a number of examples from the DirectX SDK on Windows XP. They're not the greatest thing since sliced bread, but we want to whet your appetite. We hope to release builds in the coming months progressing from demos to fully functional games. We also plan to post on this blog from time to time with screenshots and videos of what's to come.

The preview build is available here. Inside this zip is a README.TXT file with complete instructions on where to install the files (don't worry, we'll have an installer in the near future) and how to get and run the examples from the SDK.

We at Falling Leaf welcome your feedback, and we're committed to giving you the best high-end gaming experience possible, regardless of OS.

Enjoy,
- Cody Brocious
Lead Alky Engineer

Man, I'd love to see if this will work with Microsoft's planned DX10 update to Flight Sim X.

What did I say? I really hate the phrase "I told you so" but I just _knew_ this was going to happen.

Well, it not that it actually works without problems... even SDK samples have issues. We will see how will this end up... Thumbs up for the team!

I wouldn't call it a port. It's just a wrapper which converts DX10 calls to (I'm assuming) DX9 calls. Kinda like what Creative is doing with Alchemy in Vista by convert DS3D calls to OpenAL. Obviously you shouldn't expect anywhere near native performance. Quite frankly, I don't think games are going to be exclusively DX10 for a long time, so I really don't see the point of this.

Halo 2 for PC will require Vista, presumably to showcase DirectX 10 and provide PC gamers an incentive to migrate.

And you can drive your car at 100 mpd in reverse on the highway, doesn't mean it's an idea that is workable or that you'll be satisfied with it. Not to mention the interesting crash possibilities......

Damn it! I was really looking forward to this title coming to PC. I really don't want to be forced to 'side-grade' to Vi$ta

Indeed, many (or MOST, or even ALL) of those games are DX9 games, wich have been modded for DX10, do a search for reviews, tests show those games work SLOWER and quality is bad compared to the dx9 version.
There are only few games that have been designed for DX10... and besides that, tests that I have read still show XP is better for games... since Vista uses lots of resources during a (native dx10) game (source tweakers.net)

Not that there's any DX10 games you can currently purchase, but have you tried this out with anything?

Guys, why not try getting it from the source, Falling Leaf Systems?

Notice that it's still pre-release, as in beta.
