Just a quick note about IE8, it comes with at least 4 extra .wav audio files. I dont know about you guys, but i dont use any such sound themes or such. Also, i am not excited by IE 8 as a browser itself, but more over as system update for the OS. As i just wrote over in Kurt Austs thread i benchmarked the java performance, and my firefox portable is still way faster, theres no comparison.
Seeing as how nlite doesnt remove these audio files, one would have to do that oneself.
Filenames are :
Windows Feed Discovered.wav Windows Information Bar.wav Windows Navigation Start.wav Windows Pop-up Blocked.wav
Which all resides under %systemroot%\Media folder.
there's also a ding.wav file under %systemroot%\PCHealth\HelpCtr\System\Remote Assistance folder
Which i am not sure if was there by default or not. (I had to re-arrange my install setup to accommodate for behaviour in my display drivers, so i added back in stuff)
I havent tried any automated way of installing IE8 yet, but i sure hope to have a way to get it integrated in the windows installation image, above all else.

Honestly, I was growing tired of seeing MSXML 6 SP1 offered on the Microsoft Update website. And I am hoping SP2 will overcome the previous problems encountered by others. It seems to work for me, but I'll remove it from the update pack if anybody has problems when it's included.
I chose MSXML6 x64 SP2 from the available choices. x86 binaries are included in the package.

No, please do not remove. Keeping stuff is *good*. Thank you for all of your hard work 5eraph.

@5eraph
"I have decided to include MSXML 6.0 SP2. If anybody has difficulties installing software bundled with an older version of MSXML6 then please let me know."
Realtime, fresh install, all went perfectly and the DotNET 3.5 SP 1 and 3.5 Family Update (KB951847) x64 (containing the MSXML 6.0) installed without a hitch in it's entirety.
VERY NICE
thanks

Update 2009-06_1 is working splendidly here on my MOST favorite XP64 system - Core I7-920, 6GB RAM, SATA all the way, and GTX9800+.
Your efforts are beyond great and I will always appreciate what you have done for me.
I am working on a LONG document about how I use nLite and of course your update packs figure prominently in that. I will forward a copy here when completed.
MANY THANKS from a supporter in Atlanta, GA. USA.

hey 5eraph; Will the end-of-life schedule for XP by Microsoft have any influence on your next updatepack(s)? What I mean is: Do you have any idea how long MS will keep on releasing updates for server 2003 x64 and/or XP x64 Edition? If I understood correctly, support for XP x64 will no longer be given as of the end of June 2009, but I may have gotten that wrong.
I'll continue to release update packs for as long as I continue to use XP x64. I eat my own dog food. It keeps me motivated.
From what I've been able to find, XP x64's end of life appears to be 2014/04/08. Windows Server 2003 x64 will remain in extended support until 2015/07/14, I don't believe we have anything to worry about.

Is there a way to easily update a running/installed system using this pack? (and yes, I have disk-access from a separate XP OS to the installed OS I want to update...)
I could try unpacking the files in their respective folders, and overwrite all older versions of it, but I know there's much more involved. Can such procedure easily be scripted? (Guess not, since it would make you similar to autopatcher, who got their share of letters from Microsoft about it..)

As much as I would want to, I cannot migrate all windows machines I maintain/admin to Win 7 x64, due to several issues related to hardware, software, drivers, licenses and cost. Looking at the previous hardware breakdowns and software insecurities involved, I will (also still) be using XP x64 until 2015 or stretched even further-on into the future.RickSteele wrote:I believe anything we need to know will come from one of the admins or RyanVM himself. I just hope 5eraph, and his family, are all OK.
Remember too, come October he could very well migrate to Win 7 (x64)-I know I will be; so Win XP (x64) will be going into storage.
Taking into account what 5eraph has written about this subject, I don't think he will (or would) drop XP x64 entirely anytime soon.
Perhaps MicroSoft got to him and offered a sh_tload of money and amazing housing so he can work for them as a tech consult and package (or even OS) maintainer? Either way, something about his absense smells fishy to me.. Ryan, care to jump in?
I'm not on vacation, but I may as well be. My x64 update pack and addon developments are suspended until I can build another x64 machine. I don't currently have an x64 system to use or test anymore. The moderately speedy x86 machine I had is officially relegated to my spare parts bin due to a faulty motherboard. Until yesterday, I had been without a working computer here since July 8—entirely too long.
My current machine is, on average, over ten years old and composed entirely of spare parts from four previously useful machines. I can read forums and check emails, but not much else on this 400 MHz dinosaur. I can't even run a virtual machine, so new addon creation or testing on any platform is also not possible for me at this point.
Everything I currently have available for download through MediaFire will remain available without advertisements at least through March 2010 when the account is due to be renewed.
When I can build another PC it will run XP x64. I'm not convinced Windows 7 will be enough of an improvement over Vista for me to take seriously; at least with the software I intend to use. Even if it does prove to be worthy, shelling out the extra money for anything above the basic edition may be beyond my budget since I may not be eligible for the cheaper "Upgrade" version.

Yes, glad to read you're OK! Aside from your tremendous work on packs and RVMI, you've been a generous, kind and helpful man in the midst of stress and hard to figure out problems and difficult users lacking proper communication skills. You grow on people that way
I currently maintain a netbook (Asus EEE with Atom N270) with an XP x64 on it, which is quite amazing that way I might add. The thing only did cost me 260 euros, and I'm truely flabbergasted by how the small screen still works fairly OK, and by its speed overall, especially with XP x64 on it.
For those looking for advance updates, Kurt has been real kind in providing info on updates post the latest 5eraph pack: http://www.msfn.org/board/howto-create- ... e-360.html

Patch Tuesday has come and gone, and it seems to be time for a status update:
As of now, 31 high priority updates and 40 additional updates are slated for the next release. All are downloaded and extracted. Once I've finished working on the INFs for all updates—I'm around halfway done with them—the updates will start going in the pack and several rounds of testing will begin.
Testing will be slower than usual. I'm down to one good machine instead of the two I had previously. Add to that the largest update workload I've seen so far. It will be a few more days, easily, before I can hope to be done.
I would be further along, but I spent a couple days writing new batch scripts from scratch to replace the lost ones. At least the new ones are better. I'm still modifying INFs by hand, though; hence the longer than average delay at this stage.
I had previously given Kurt_Aust an estimate of today or tomorrow for completion. Given my current rate of progress, this Tuesday looks like a more realistic, if still ambitious, goal.

No worries.
For those new to the update pack, or unaware of how I normally announce progress; the Changelog is a running progress indicator showing what I have done so far. I work in spurts, so don't be alarmed if there are breaks lasting several hours. I need to sleep, too.
