Re: MSFN.org state
Unfortunately, I'd say SOMETHING isn't working quite right. Let's hope it's nothing like last time.
Re: MSFN.org state
It's back up... for now...
Re: MSFN.org state
The MSFN news pages are still working, although there is nothing there that's less than nearly a year old, the forum pages never connect.

Re: MSFN.org state
The forum is "working", but ever since the latest "incident" the forum response time has been terrible. Over the last day or so it is more likely to time out than respond correctly.

Re: MSFN.org state
And now it seems to be down again? Or not. LOL Response time is so bad it's hard to tell.

Re: MSFN.org state
Since Dencorso had posted the picture showing the "too many connections" error, we can presume that either there is some attack onto the site itself, or one of the services the site, or the hosting company uses.
PS: if anyone in the US knows how to send a text to a mobile number in Europe on an Android phone, LMK.

Re: MSFN.org state
Dumb question, but I didn't know that it would be any different than sending a text to any other number, such as to a US number, so what is different about sending to one in Europe?Tripredacus wrote: ↑Thu Jul 05, 2018 9:31 amf anyone in the US knows how to send a text to a mobile number in Europe on an Android phone, LMK.

Re: MSFN.org state
You need to use an exit code, otherwise the text will go to the equivalent number in the US. Using the + sign on the exit code does not work, I am told the message wasn't received.
Re: MSFN.org state
Surely you just put the appropriate country code in front of the number, exactly as if you were calling it?
I am in Europe, and I regularly text a number in the States with no problem, so surely it should work the other way around?
I also saw the "too many connections" message once, but usually there's no response at all from the MSFN forum pages.
It could indeed be a denial of service attack.

Re: MSFN.org state
That's what I assumed. Maybe Dave and Trip could experiment to see what works, since they are both active and could even call each other until they are able to iron things out?
EDIT: On an unrelated note, what is it about MSFN that has caused it to be targeted for attack or have other major failures over the last several years? At least it seems that way when empirically comparing it to the uptimes and response times of other tech forums such as RyanVM, WinCert, MDL, etc.

Re: MSFN.org state
I know there are some people in various places that hold grudges against MSFN.bphlpt wrote: ↑Thu Jul 05, 2018 6:37 pmEDIT: On an unrelated note, what is it about MSFN that has caused it to be targeted for attack or have other major failures over the last several years? but that seems like a Denial of Service attack would be pretty low even for such people.
Even is such a thing is true (which I dont think is) it doesn't explain the reliability issues.
Re: MSFN.org state
oops, it is down again. showing centos default page now.
Re: MSFN.org state
Seems to be working again now.
Fingers crossed!

Re: MSFN.org state
The host has said it was a switch problem. It is possible to get a "too many connections" type error with a switch that is malfunctioning. Generally can be caused by collisions. Try it out at home, take a network cable and connect it to two ports on your router and see what happens! xD

Does the operator need to consult someone perhaps and get their "xper"t opinion? :p

It wasn't - I fell asleep at 3:30 am, so it was down for a good five hours or so.

Re: MSFN.org state
Does anyone know how I can get in touch with the admin? My account no longer works. I re-registered but received no confirmation email.
Thanks
Thanks
Re: MSFN.org state
This is a problem I'm afraid, AFAIK there is no way of contacting xper (the site owner) except through the site, which is not a lot of use if the site is down or you can't login to it!
I've just looked, and assuming your user name at MSFN is also "mockingbird" you are appearing as a registered member who joined 18 hours ago, so it looks as if your registration did work!

But it appears as though my account was purged because I have two confirmation emails from 2007 proving I joined then.
Either way, when I go there it says it is awaiting validation for my account, and when I re-send confirmation email, nothing appears.
Can you please PM him for me?
Cheers
Re: MSFN.org state
I will, but are you sure the confirmation e-mails aren't just being caught by a spam filter?
I think the e-mails from MSFN are a bit flaky at the moment anyway, as I'm supposed to get notification if anyone posts to a thread I'm subscribed to, and for the last week or two I often haven't been getting anything when I shroud have done.

Yes, I've checked and re-checked... The last email in my spam folder is an extortion email claiming I have been caught on my own webcam performing a certain act and to send a certain amount of money lest the video be released...Dave-H wrote: ↑Thu Sep 06, 2018 5:07 pmI will, but are you sure the confirmation e-mails aren't just being caught by a spam filter?

Great, glad Den was able to sort it out for you.

Re: MSFN.org state
Are we having a DoS attack on MSFN? It started just about now...

Re: MSFN.org state
Yeah, just when I needed to look up some info on setting config files for windows 98se to limit it's RAM amount, the forum goes kaboom.
Re: MSFN.org state
I got you covered. This much I can do. Here:

xper REALLY needs a way to allow us to contact him other than the forum. This is getting crazy over the last year.

Re: MSFN.org state
I have his cell phone number but I can never get my phone to work with the number. It always thinks it is a US phone number, not EU.

Re: MSFN.org state
I think I got a WhatsApp msg sent him. No reply yet. Cross your fingers...
Re: MSFN.org state
It's back online!
However I'm unable to view my profile, another person I asked is also unable to view theirs.

@Dibya: No this came up before. Xper seems to have secluded himself somewhat ....lol. I realize it's "his" forum, but when you've amassed a group of users to start relying on it, I then view it as a responsibility one has to those users.
