Re: Welcome to Windows XP Service Pack 4
I just did a fresh install, and did what I posted here. Worked like a charm!!!!!!! Really impressively easy. I did go to windows update and it gave me the option to add KB4056615, KB4074852 (which I did not) and KB2564958. That last one is much older and I will add it to the next release of "Hotfix post-uSP4 bat installer". Also, Abbodi86's AIO dotNet updater does install all updates to dotNet! Makes for a nice install, feels really good!!GH0st wrote: ↑Wed Mar 28, 2018 10:03 pmok, here it is ... the Post-uSP4 update hotfix batch installer.
This started with trevor12, modified by myself. I removed all the dotNet updates as abbodi86 does a perfect job updating all the dotNets, with his most current AIO installer. I took out a few known BAD updates (kb4056615, kb4074852) and the added March 2018 updates. Installing the latest IE8, which fixes things.
Proper deployment would be from a fresh install of uSP4, upon first boot to desktop, to place the "HOTFIX" folder on the C-drive, proper path would then be "C:\hotfix", from with-in that folder double click the "install" ... it will install all in the order its written. Reboot. With in the OS (Add or Remove Programs - Add/Remove Windows Components) chose to install dotNet 1-3-4, Harkaz does perfect install/optimization, reboot. Then install the abbodi86 AIO update pack, which will update *ALL* dotNET's thru January 2018. Upon first attempt of windows update you will be offered newer dotNET updates and the two dreaded BAD updates listed above, which should avoided!
This will offer the most perfect fresh install, (almost) fully updated, all offline, feels good.
Hotfix post-uSP4 batch installer--> newer version listed below
abbodi86 AIO dotNet update installer--> https://drop.me/on3G0q
I will try to update this file regularly, but I will need some help from 5eraph and user_hidden, so I know which updates to remove, while adding newer files, that replace older ones.

GH0st, you may wish to name the next version of your archive in the form "WinXP_post_USP4_hotfixes_batch_installer_date.7z" as I can see people downloading the current version and then forgetting what it's actually for.

Tested Windows XP SP4 in a virtual machine. Microsoft.NET Framework 4.0 is not wrapped in a package? It was not installed.
Re: Welcome to Windows XP Service Pack 4
Start - Settings - Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs - Add/Remove Windows Components, options to add (check) are:
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5

OK ... "WinXP_post_uSP4_hotfix_installer" ... now called ... GH0stPak_17Feb19 !!!
First: Best deployment would be from a fresh install of WinXP-uSP4! Upon first boot, place unzipped file on desktop and double click the "install" with in ... it will install each of the updates ... causing a Reboot when finished.
Next: from with-in the OS (Add or Remove Programs - Add/Remove Windows Components) chose to install all dotNet (1-3-4) Harkaz does perfect install/optimization, then reboot. Then install the abbodi86 AIO update pack, which will update ALL dotNET's, time to reboot again.

Thank you very much. I appreciate all that you do for us.
Re: Welcome to Windows XP Service Pack 4
Most recently, 5eraph, listed his updates to his update pack, which updates should be deleted cause newer ones cover the older ones. That and I need to add one more. So will work on this tonight, should be up soon. I will update the upper post, showing changes too.
I named it uSP4 hotfix, but could be used on any x86_enu WinXP computer.

Re: Welcome to Windows XP Service Pack 4
GH0st, you've hard coded the paths in your batch filewhich means that for it to work without editing, people have to extract the archive to C:\Hotfix
As there is no UAC elevation issues in XP, it would be better off without the path, then it could be extracted and ran from anywhere
Or you could use the %~dp0 variable to automatically generate the correct path
Also, is there a particular reason that you use the /NoBackup /n and /OverwriteOEM /o switches or use /Quiet /q rather than /Passive /u (which gives visual progress feedback to the user) ?
Code: Select all
c:\hotfix\windowsxp-kb942288-v3-x86.exe /n /o /q /z
As there is no UAC elevation issues in XP, it would be better off without the path, then it could be extracted and ran from anywhere
Code: Select all
windowsxp-kb942288-v3-x86.exe /n /o /q /z
Or you could use the %~dp0 variable to automatically generate the correct path
Code: Select all
"%~dp0windowsxp-kb942288-v3-x86.exe" /n /o /q /z
Also, is there a particular reason that you use the /NoBackup /n and /OverwriteOEM /o switches or use /Quiet /q rather than /Passive /u (which gives visual progress feedback to the user) ?
Re: Welcome to Windows XP Service Pack 4
Or you could use this single line:
Then the folder of the batch file will be the working folder (no need to put %~dp0 at the beginning of each local files you want to execute).
Code: Select all
pushd %~dp0
Alteration of the world

KB4101864
KB4093257
KB2564958 - odd, this is an old update from 2011

Re: Welcome to Windows XP Service Pack 4
The latest pack (13Apr18) did update to include kb2564958, not sure why it still offered it to you again unless you have the older version. I have done a full/fresh install, then used my pack to update and first visit to MS Update I was fully updated except the one problem (KB4074852).
I have not looked at todays updates yet, but will update after a few days, to watch this forum and other forums, to make sure nothing goes wrong. So probably for this week end.

Re: Welcome to Windows XP Service Pack 4
I have installed todays updates, but it would not offer them thru MU until I manually installed the latest IE8 (kb4103768), then it would offer the rest.
So today I got: kb4056564-v2, kb4101477, kb4103768, kb4130957, kb4131188, kb4134651 ... also offered two office updates. All is well for me! If no one complains about any of them I will update the post-uSP4 pack.

Re: Welcome to Windows XP Service Pack 4
Remember, it is necessary to FIRST manually install the latest !E8 cumulative update EVERY MONTH to most reliably have MU/WU work effectively.
You might also want to reconsider KB4134651, 5eraph isn't including it in his update pack - viewtopic.php?p=144429#p144429.

Re: Welcome to Windows XP Service Pack 4
I forgot, but found out, thru trial and error. All was feeling good. In the past my issue with kb4074852 was trying to get to services.msc ... and others. This latest does not have that same effect there, but with Computer management. So will avoid KB4124651 ... thanks and also thanks to 5eraph!bphlpt wrote: ↑Tue May 08, 2018 9:41 pmRemember, it is necessary to FIRST manually install the latest !E8 cumulative update EVERY MONTH to most reliably have MU/WU work effectively.

Re: Welcome to Windows XP Service Pack 4
does anyone know where I can download a KB, which installs the Microsoft Update?
you know when go to systems properties, Automatic Update tab, then hit the Windos Update Web site, on that site click to go to Microsoft Update site, it installs the MU software ... where can I get that, so I can add to my pack?

Re: Welcome to Windows XP Service Pack 4
@Kurt_Aust, @mooms: I did try and like the (pushd "%~dp0"), but tryed to delete the other switches. The batch installer would stop cause some of the updates were set to reboot. So in the end, rather then try to figure each out, I just places all the previouse switches in place, so it will force it to install each. Then the IE8 update, at end, will cause reboot.Kurt_Aust wrote: ↑Mon Apr 16, 2018 4:58 pmIf using mooms' suggestion, better add quote marks around "%~dp0"Code: Select all

I did try to find place were I can check these switches and possible find better ones to use, but, after an hour of messing around, I could not find much of anything on this topic, at least nothing I could make sense of (4am in morning)
Do you have a site I could use, regarding switches that I could add in the BAT files and such?
I have finished the next version, I am dating 12May18, few days in advance, to give time for adobi to finish his AIO dotNET updater, which will include the two newest updates for dotNet2+4. Then I will do this on a new live install. Just to check see if I have all updates needed. I am just avoiding the one, kb4134651

@GH0st
what about the classic form for updates in batch file
and to run ie8 update last with restart option
you put it in a folder eg ie8
and you call it with
the batch file and all updates should be in the same folder
Maybe someone with more experience in batch file command
can correct what i write

I got it figured out, got to do some more testing, on my own machine, if no problems, I will upload
Also to note, Adobi just released his most current dotNET AIO 20180508, very helpful when doing fresh install

I have tested multiple times on my current OS install. Everything works as planned. I will do a reformat and fresh install soon, to make sure I got all available updates included, except the one problem.
Special thanks to 5eraph, Kurt_Aust and mooms ... who played a roll in optimizing this update with their thoughts/suggestions. A good community effort here by all!

Re: Welcome to Windows XP Service Pack 4
Working with, trying out, the latest updates, I find "kb4293928" to bring alot of extra latency to the entire system. I uninstalled it and my speed came back!
Last friday I did a fresh install after making a fresh ISO of uSP4, forcing myself to make almost no changes to ISO. Fresh install, very fast, till todays updates. So uninstalled kb4293928, which warned me of its ties to kb4294416 and the latest IE, so I re-installed them after reboot. All is well again ... so I am adding this to the AVOID list.

Re: Welcome to Windows XP Service Pack 4
Installs for me in VM with no other updates installed. No OS alterations. I don't normally use the /O switch, but it doesn't matter in this case. It installs for me either way.
Typically, when an update doesn't install for me it means that the component being updated has been disabled (or hasn't been enabled if disabled by default). Might help to know if you nLite your source or if you commonly disable Windows components.
Here's my log.

Re: Welcome to Windows XP Service Pack 4
I can manually install it after the install. Or let WU install, but, it should install thru this hotfix update installer. It does not install, but then it will install thru WU or manually. The log shows fail, but I dont know how to interpret it further.
Its not a super big deal, as WU will give it to us, just odd that it wont install after a fresh install.
I do use nLite, but I do not remove anything. I do ADD a folder with Intel INF drivers thru nLite

Re: Welcome to Windows XP Service Pack 4
I think update kb2564958 is already in SP4,
maybe this is why you get an error
maybe this is why you get an error
Re: Welcome to Windows XP Service Pack 4
no, its not included, which is why it IS offered in WU. It's appropriate to have in this pack, will NOT install with my pack, but will install manually.
Re: Welcome to Windows XP Service Pack 4
in COMPONENTS_REFERENCE.pdf from SP4 Components Reference
in page 7 says that KB2564958 is included.
I dont know why a fresh install of sp4 want this update again.
Maybe they change something in newest updates or is a 2nd version.

Your welcome!
This can be used with a fresh install of XP, but I also use it to update my current install, which is a few months old.

I tried to download WinXP_post_uSP4_hotfix_installer_16Aug18, but the "WinXP post-uSP4 hotfix installer" link above is dead! Could you please re-upload the installer?

Re: Welcome to Windows XP Service Pack 4
Someone wrote me a private message, and I am not yet finding a solution ... thought I would share it here, see if anyone has any input towards a remedy. I will continue a search on other forums.
kb4074852 is not included in the August pack ... not sure what else may be the cause ... will continue to searchHi Ghost
Thanks for your August pack.
Everything is fine after install except I cannot scan from my canon printer to my PC any more, at least the file will not write to the hard drive and pops up the following error message.
"cannot write file. Code 10,242,7"
I Googled extensively and the one explanation that made sense came at the end of page 2
"If you are using Windows XP Pro SP3 in POSReady/WEPOS mode or Windows Embedded version only, the problem is a specific update patch # KB4074852. This patch changes important system files. After updating, many apps are not working properly (problems with .NET-based apps, scanning functions, video conversions, wifi adapters etc). The only solution is to ignore this patch. If you have it installed, you need to uninstall it."
Now I know from reading your posts that you have excluded KB4074852 and I don't see it under Add or Remove Programs, so if its not that patch what else should I be looking for.
I can scan under Windows 7 but not XP since the August patch.
Thank you in advance.
Regards,
Gary.
Re: Welcome to Windows XP Service Pack 4
KB4134651 was meant to replace KB4074852. Gary should try removing the newer update if it exists (versions 1 and 2, released in May and July respectively).
There was a lengthy discussion on MSFN regarding those updates, but the posts seem to be missing now. All posts between February 6th and June 7th were lost due to database corruption.

I joined MSFN and a kind member there helped sort out my issue.
The problem file is just version 2 of KB4134651 or KB4134651-v2.
As I could not uninstall KB4134651-v2 from Add Remove Programs under Control Panel, the kind member at MSFN provided a small uninstall file which I ran, restarted the PC and then installed the patched version of KB4134651-v2, restarted the PC and voilà.
My Canon Printer can scan back to my XP PC again, hooray.
Thanks for your input and thank you to GHOst who also tried to help.
Much obliged.
Kind Regards,
Gary.
