[Old] XUDPack v2.0.9 - 12/05/2007

Post by Xable » Fri Feb 24, 2006 6:06 pm

Here is my light update pack. All of the optional registry entries are omitted and only high priority updates are included along with just a few extras..

Aim

To install the bare minimum required to protect the system and keep Microsoft Update happy. This involves only adding registry entries which serve a purpose keeping them to a minimum and installing hotfixes in the high priority section of Microsoft Update only. High Priority updates consist of critical updates, security updates, and software updates. No fix`s in the optional section are included.

Purpose
To be as lightweight as possible. That means installing as little as possible while still making the system up-to-date and secure.

Contents
All high priority updates on Microsoft Update plus a few extras. See my website for full details.

Changes in Version 2.0.9 - Released 12th May 2007

They are all the updates that show on the high priority section of microsoft update.

In theory they all should be in RVM`s update pack, if their not then they`ve been superseeded by another fix he includes in his pack. Take a look at the link boooggy posted above for all the updates in RVM pack.

Thanks for sharing this!! I'm always looking for just the right minimal pack. You did a very nice job of selecting what to include. I'll be testing this when the new Dotnet 1+2 release is available.

Might be just a bad day to release? This one wanted to install Latest version of Microsoft Installer, then latest WGA, then requested a reboot --- all this upon first visit to Microsoft Update. Your version 1.0 did not do this, but maybe they changed stuff today?

For the record, expect KB912945 (released today) to break a bunch of stuff. It's the result of Microsoft's loss of the patent infringement lawsuit they were in over how ActiveX controls are loaded. Read the KB article for more details.

techtype, thanx for the feedback. Just wga shows for me. I`ve done a silent update though, which should stop wga showing up. Just needed an extra reg entrie. (see below)

MU is now looking for this reg entrie which gray`s out the options to disable/enable the active x control.

Code: Select all

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Ext\CLSID]
"{17492023-C23A-453E-A040-C7C580BBF700}"="1"
I`ve put this entrie in my udp and uploaded it, for me this works but wether that`ll be true for everyone, or how long it will last.. i don`t know.

I'm confused as to the difference between this and boooggy's Update Pack 1.2 (WU only)

I went through both posts and you have some KB's not in his pack, and he has some KB's not in your pack...

Which is the one I should use to be able to go to MU and see nothing to be installed?

This udp includes all the updates that show in the high priority section on a clean install of XP SP2.

So if you want all updates installed accept the optional one`s use this pack. If you want all updates installed including the optional one`s use boooggys WUZero pack.

Hi Xable :),
Are you planing to maintain this pack in the future?
Such as RVM's update pack that gets updated a few days/weeks after each month's 2nd tuesday, know what I mean?
Cheers
Rui

Yep, he's back for good :P.

nice work, X.

just wondering, why'd you remove the full list of updates? I really liked that in the first post...maybe put it above the changelog?

Thanks!

Xable, as i understand this pack is used in addition to ryanvm post-sp2 is it not? adding High priority hot fixes, as far as i understand Boooggys 2k3 post sp1 only adds critical and a few High priority hot fixes but not all.

a06, Visit the download link.
as i understand this pack is used in addition to ryanvm post-sp2 is it not?
No it`s not. My pack is stand alone and consists of purely High priority updates only, They show in the High Priority section of Microsoft Update (right above the Optional Updates)

My pack only includes those High priority updates, none of the optional one`s are included, in fact no other updates are included accept for those in the High priority section of Microsoft Update.

Hence the title "High Priority UpdatePack"

There is often confusion about the terminology for updates, read more here:

Is there any way to remove specific updates from the update pack? I'm trying to create a custom XP install CD for a corporate environment, and this pack is making things a LOT easier than expected. However, we cannot allow specific patches due to software compatibility issues. I want to be able to remove the KB812912 update and the Microsoft Update client, if at all possible. The 812912 patch absolutely has to go, and I just want the Windows Update v6 client, not the Microsoft Update client. Please let me know ASAP how to unintegrate those items from the pack. Thanks. :)
