[Release] Preset Services & Descriptions

Post by ENU_user » Wed May 31, 2006 12:22 pm

many web pages refer to Black Viper's Services Descriptions in the attempt to explain better how these services are used, what they really do, and how they relate to one another.

this addon will rewrite descriptions & names for the items found under services.msc with tips and explanations (making them more understandable) when viewing them under the services.msc window.

Because there are 3 diferent settings
-I use XP Smoker PRO, it also sets the services to the safe setting
-U can also use NLite and manualy dissable these programs from starting

thnkz

It doesn't deal with services but services description, in the left side of services.exe, you will see a more precise description of most of the services, and some clue to decide if you should keep the services up...

But has I have a big big collection of this kind of things, here is for you the services information you are talking about... all credits goes to BlackViper for his awesome works... It explain, the services you can stop, those needed, etc... I have only the file for XP PRO but you can easily tweak them for HOME.

While this sounds like a great idea at first glance, sometimes I think that making the services more accessible to noobs is not such a great idea. Then again if you're a consultant looking to increase your service calls, this could be quite a boon :P

i did try to do something about it but sorry no go ..
just add to integrator and hit integrate ;)

some services are now loaded by new and updated files with newer descriptions
so to achieve the over all look in the ( names ) part ,had to add runonce entries.

I hate to complain, but if you thought the MS descriptions were long, these are novels. More importantly, they're all much longer than the 349 max characters services.msc will display in the Description field.

Don't get me wrong, as currently written, they're a great resource for a web page, but they're way too long for actual use in Services.msc. I'd hoped when his site was reopened, there'd be a condensed version that works and looks good in the limited space services.msc offers. But, no such luck.

So, I edited a new copy of the XPSp2 services for my build. End result is all the same info without all the personal commentary. Most of the descriptions fit well within a maximized services.msc @1152px and none are so long they get cropped for excess length. To be fair, the default Microsoft descriptions are also guilty of this. :)

I'm gonna send BV a note and see if he minds me sharing. If he's agreeable and if anyone wants a copy, I'll post. Here's an example change.

Original: Crops at "aware how many Games actua..."

Code: Select all

HKLM,"SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSIServer","Description",0,"( MSIServer ) required for software applications that install using MSI files. If no applications that you have will install properly or you get an error that involves 'RPC Service,' place in to Automatic or Manual. Only disable after you have completed installation of your applications, mainly Office and such. I am not aware how many Games actually use MSI Files. In an idle state, uses about 3.4 MB of RAM. Put it to manual to save that amount."
Edited: Fits, does not crop. IMO, says the same thing.

Code: Select all

HKLM,"SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSIServer","Description",0,
"(MSIServer) Used by .MSI installers. If app setups fail or you see RPC Service or msiexec.exe errors, set to Automatic or Manual. When idle, service uses 3.4 MB RAM. Set to Manual to reclaim it. Disable if you never install or update software."

:P we don't directly need bv's full permit for doing a simple change\edit
2) if you say you took it one step a head in updating it, no problem, send me a link for the overview, so i may update some for everyone, when i get time to play with this again ..
tho at the moment its good as is.
i know of a small update it needs but nothing critical for now ;)
thanks !

Oh, cool. :) I'll make another pass through to clean up MY personal commentary :) I'll post a copy tomorrow and send you the link for review.

Just makes more sense to me to limit description length to what can actually be displayed :)

ok try rephrase some of the good tips instead of loosing them completely like: for the ( msiserver) service :
"safe to disable after you have completed installation of your applications, mainly Office and such"

maybe this will make some descriptions appear (same) as long, but some of these additional tips help pass ideas quickly
so we don't want to loose those, i still think bv did a great job adding these tips in his own good particular way

btw ( note ) regarding the limited display in services.msc, if still ( un noticed ) i have already re-edited all descriptions so they fit the given default space .

Not a problem. :) That example was my "personal edit" but I realize not everyone may want such brevity. Finding a way to keep it all in there, yet cut the size in half makes it more challenging (fun).

BV did do a great job. There's a lot of work put into them, and it definitely shows. Also, the descriptions are perfect for the website they're living on.

Whoops. I missed that line. Do you want me to edit the original descriptions, or edit the shortened descs you just made, or...what? :)

like if you find some descs, not as clear as it can\should be, by-sentence, phrasing, or-wrong .etc
just let me know and will update accordingly

Does anybody else have a problem with this latest release?.

I have started having problems with mu uA disc and get an error message as displayed in the image

Image

After hours of trying different configs I finally just used Ryan's latest pack (works perfectly on its own) and this addon and that is when the error is reproducible. It seems to be the fault of enu.exe as when I comment it out I can get past T39 and do not get the error. Does this exe hex edit any files as , after Googling for a while, I think the error is due to mismatched service pack files.

this exe included ways to edit some inf files, as a small cleanup, obviously it broke some inf file
btw did you add or change anything in this addon?

as a temp fix i have uploaded a version that doesn't include this small optimizer, that was more like a bonus addition for this addon not more!.

Hi ENU_user, thanks for the reply. I have only edited your addon to track down the problem, for the final install it is in its original state. I'll try your temp version and post back, thank you.

Well I have tried the temp addon and it does not stop @ T39, the adoon installs successfully but when the desktop loads my custom theme is displayed with the Windows Classic look.

I can load other custom themes and they display as normal but the theme that is set as the default has the look altered. I have tried with just Ryans pack again and all is well but the two times I have tried the temp addon I am unable to get it to work.

Does anyone else have this problem, it seems from reading this topic a few people use it, I don't want ENU_user wasting time if it is down to one of my custom actions, although the previous version worked flawlessly, I just dont have it any more to compare the differences.

I tried swapping the ini in the temp addon with the one in the above link to try and narrow things down but there is still the same problem, maybe it lies in the XProDesc.inf.

I also noticed a typo whilst having a look, there is an extra o in Tip ="coustomized services. apologies if its being picky

p.s
i only hope you are testing on a virtual machine before actually burning the cd
if that still doesn't work consider adding sfc_os.dll patch from the system file patches thread by zacam, that or for syssetup dll which ever does the trick
i am currently using the all-in-one system file patch's and it runs correctly
