Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder (KB922120-v5) Addon for Windows XP SP2

Description:
  • This addon directly integrates KB922120-v5.
Details:
  • Info link: KB922120
  • Intended for Windows XP SP2.
  • Uses files from the SP2QFE branch.
  • Not intended for RyanVM Update Pack 2.1.5 or later. It's already included.
  • Tested in Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 with RyanVM Update Pack 2.1.4.
  • Integrates with RyanVM Integrator v1.4.2 and nLite 1.2.1 (or later versions of either).
Credits:File Information:
  • Name: 5er_KB922120-v5_Addon.7z
    Size: 39 KB
    MD5: 1ADA4491C2013E1B810BF0CAF685F51F
Notes:
  • The KB article shows file versions of 5.1.2600.3010 while the actual v5 hotfix contains file versions of 5.1.2600.3029. Just so you know. ;)

The Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder protocol installs by default, just like it would when manually installing this hotfix. To disable the automatic protocol installation while keeping it available for later simply delete this line in KB922120.INF:

    Code: Select all

    HKLM,"%RUNONCE%","rspndr",,"%11%\rspndr.exe -i"

Changelog:
  • [2008/05/08 18:10 UTC] - SP2 addon officially obsoleted.
  • [2006/11/26 12:30 UTC] - Initial release. (v5)

I'd imagine that it's trying to find information about the network segment the computer is on. That's just a guess though.

For more information about LLTD, this document is available from Microsoft: LLTD: Link Layer Topology Discovery Protocol
Abstract
This specification describes how the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) protocol operates over wired (802.3 Ethernet) and wireless (802.11) media. As the protocol name suggests, the core functions of LLTD enable applications to discover the topology of a network. In addition, LLTD has optional QoS Extensions that applications can use to diagnose problems, especially those involving signal strength on wireless networks or bandwidth constraints in home networks.
I don't pretend to know what it all means. All I know is that this hotfix allows Vista systems to properly detect XP machines with this hotfix installed.

In this diagram Jayce-PC and Megan-PC are running Vista and the other two are running XP with KB922120 installed. Test is a virtual machine running on the host Duality. Duality, Jayce-PC, and Megan-PC are on the same switch. The hub shown is actually a virtual device that allows Test to share Duality's network interface, but Vista doesn't see any difference.

Thanks for the info mate. I made a backTrace on the ip list that tries to connect my comp via rspndr.sys. They were safe to ignore.

The Network Map is part of EXPLORER.EXE in Vista. No visible extra processes are started when using it. I somehow doubt replacing that file in XP will have good consequences...

This addon has been obsolete since RyanVM post-SP2 Update Pack 2.1.5, which includes that update.

It seems that, in Microsoft's infinite wisdom ;), KB922120 was not included in SP3. However, Ryan will include it in his upcoming post-SP3 Update Pack. :)

Thanks for the post! Didn't realize it was included in 2.1.5 and higher!

No problem, jumz.

This addon has outlived its usefulness.
