Internet Explorer 8 and the Microsoft Update website

Post by 5eraph » Wed Apr 29, 2009 11:19 am

The time has come for the obsolescence of Internet Explorer 7 with the release of IE8 on the Microsoft Update website as a high priority update. For those reluctant to update, like myself, the following registry entry will effectively hide the new update and prevent the Automatic Updates service from updating you if you have the service enabled.

REG file:

Code: Select all

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Setup\8.0]
"DoNotAllowIE80"=dword:00000001
INF file:

Code: Select all

HKLM,"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Setup\8.0","DoNotAllowIE80",0x10001,1
If the above code looks familiar to you... it should be. It is very similar to the code used to block the IE7 update:

REG file:

Code: Select all

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Setup\7.0]
"DoNotAllowIE70"=dword:00000001
INF file:

Code: Select all

HKLM,"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Setup\7.0","DoNotAllowIE70",0x10001,1
If you want to stick with IE6, use both the IE7 and IE8 codes above. :)

For those using my update pack:
  • If you haven't looked in 5erUpPck.inf then you may be pleasantly surprised to see that the block codes are already present, and have been since February. To enable the code, remove one or both of the well placed semicolons near the beginning of the file in front of the "AddReg = Kill_IE7" and "AddReg = Kill_IE8" lines. ;)

    This won't work post-install. You'll need to use the code above on a running Windows installation.
