Works fine here as well. You could also try using a proxy maybe? Not sure if that would help or not.

I used the Office 2007 Deployment kit or whatever it's called from the Microsoft Website. With that it creates an "answer" file from all the options/settings you pick. Then you just run the setup exe with the switch to use the answer file. Should be something like "setup.exe /adminfile filename.MSP"...

Linux is also another solution, if it's just being used for simple things. Many different distros out there.
I personally prefer running Windows 2000 on older computers, 98 is just going way to far back.

If you go the the Microsoft Update page, and click Change settings on the left hand side, you can choose to stop using MS Update.

yeah, i can say that it works quite well. no problems with wmp11 yet...
