Yay for bandwidth leeching assholes

Post by RyanVM » Tue Sep 19, 2006 10:39 am

Thanks to one specific IP address, I'm out of bandwidth for the month. Wheee. Downloads from my main site have been switched to a mirror for the rest of the month, but the rest of my hosted sites (such as addons.ryanvm.net and others) will have to be taken offline until the first of next month.

FYI - I have a roughly 2TB/month bandwidth quota. One IP address at the beginning of the month began DoSing my site, in the process causing me to use 60% of my monthly quota 7 days into the month. I had my host firewall the IP address and the requests stopped and the bandwidth usage numbers returned to normal. However, the new release yesterday brought unprecedented demand and on top of that, apparently that IP address was no longer firewalled. As a result, I've completely used up my bandwidth for the month.

I have no recourse at the moment but to take as much offline as possible until next month when my quota resets itself.

I'm incredibly sorry for the inconvenience this is sure to bring about, but I appreciate in advance your understanding for the situation I'm currently in.

EDIT: And to those whose sites I'm currently hosting (Kamil, hp38guser, Mrs. Peel, etc), I'm incredibly sorry for the short notice of all this. This completely blindsided me this morning when I woke up. Please PM me if you need to get any files from me.

Why don't you put a captcha or something to completely avoid direct linking?

I'm going to be taking stronger measures in the future to prevent this stuff. Blacklisting IPs and such.

I'd be surprised if this hasn't been suggested before, but why don't you send your update pack out via BitTorrent. If you create the torrent file and upload it yourself to demonoid or where ever, then attach the torrent file to this thread each month, we will know we are getting the real deal proper update pack file. I'd be happy to download/seed it? You can do this as well putting it on your server space, I'm sure alot of ppl would get it via BitTorrent as its faster than off the site.

That's definitely coming in the near future, but that will do little for the type of attack that really killed my bandwidth this month.

ryan does not like mirrors other than himself. I think this is stopping him setting a tracker. that was discussed somewhere here...

For those wondering, this is exact grief I have gone through this week. If anybody is interested you can thank 86.34.162.74, 196.205.129.242, and 82.201.226.185 - in that order - for all the downtime over at my place.

Great news everybody! I spoke to Dreamhost on the phone today and they've agreed to remove any overage charges caused by the IP address which consumed so much bandwidth.

I'll get the other sites up by the end of the night :)

RyanVM, IMO you should Restrict your Download Area for MEMBERS only,No one can be able to Download a single file without User Authentication...

This will also increase the Forum Users...:)

403 Forbidden

Post by Mr Reorg » Wed Sep 20, 2006 6:16 am

I am getting the following 403 Forbidden message when I try to download it.
You don't have permission to access /files/RVMUpdatePack2.1.2.7z on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
 I'm an innocent noob who's lurked for some time and posted (what little I have) in the main MSFN forums. I'M INNOCENT I TELL YA, INNOCENT.

Are you using a download manager? If so, use your web browser to download direct from the site.
Otherwise, you might be blocking referers, so this might be causing issues. If I'm wrong on both counts, you'll need to talk to Ryan directly.

No, unless my son installed/downloaded something without my knowledge. I have never received an error message like this before. I'll have to doublecheck my firewall log later, I have to get ready to go to work now.

I have a website / host sitting being unused.

Please PM me if I can help out.

50GB doesn't cover one day during peak times of the month and barely a day during off-peak periods. Thanks anyway for the offer.
