If you don't mind instability, frequent formatting, or legality, then the SP3 beta is for you.

RyanVM Update Pack is the way to go. SP3 Beta is very unstable.

So far SP3 is only an update/hotfix rollup. When Microsoft releases SP3 final to the public you will find release notes in KB936929.

XP SP3

Post by ~Viper~ » Mon Dec 10, 2007 3:55 am

I downloaded and ran SP3 for about a week. With SP3, XP does run about 10% faster, but there's still quite a few bugs they have to work out. For instance, if you have a hotmail email account, you can't access it from Messenger or IE. Good thing I also run Firefox or I couldn't have gotten to my email. I uninstalled it and everything is back to normal.

I've been using RyanVM's update packs for some time now, and thats the only update packs I use.

He knows that he is doing, even though its near killing me for this new update lol.

RyanVM all the way for me.

just switch to 64-bit XP. only about 20 updates have been released since the last x64 service pack, ryanvm's update pack is incompatible, almost none of the addons on this and other sites work, and unless im mistaken, there arent even any plans for a 64-bit SP3! :P

I ran some comparative tests using RC1 for SP3 and Ryan's latest stuff.

I preffer Ryan's work over SP3. Granted, I know it's still in testing, but I'm not impressed with the flaws.

And frankly, while I cannot emperically prove it, the system feels a lot more stable and responsive using Ryan's work than SP3.

I don't believe it is. Kernel Mode Cryptographic Module is another Vista backport that will see it's first XP light of day in SP3.

That's because the 64-bit SP2 is fairly new, where as the SP2 for 32-bit is almost 4 years old. Windows x64 is actually a 64-bit derivative of Server 2003, and can't be easily compared to Windows XP.

I'm not sure why everyone talks about legality of SP3 when Microsoft released a public download for it.

The benchmarks are showing faster boot time, and overall better performance with SP3. When SP3 is officially released in a final format, I'm sure Ryan will develop post-SP3 update packs, but I'm not even sure how many post SP3 updates exist at all.
Nihilism makes me smile.

what ever is newly released by windows update after some release of an sp whether beta or not these are already post sp updates ...

new updates mostly need to deal with new security holes but some times need to stand for a test to migrate stability aswell
thats how sometimes a hot fix may mess up more then it should ...

FWIW, I'd personally go for SP3 once it's final :P. I'm running the beta on my desktop now and other than no longer having a hacked uxtheme.dll, it's working fine.

Not happy at all with SP3 RC1. Noticeable performance increase, but also bugs and glitches. It gets worse if you uninstall it. I'd recommend to anyone trying it right now not to uninstall the RC1 as it doesn't uninstall properly.

It's definitely shaping up though, I can't wait until it's done.

That would be too good to be true  ...if they don't it would be nice if we could slipstream them both with a few other items and have it all play happy together

On December 4, 2007, Microsoft released a release candidate of Service Pack 3 (build 3264) to both TechNet and MSDN Subscribers. On December 18, 2007, this version was made publicly available via Microsoft Download Center. The latest testing build of Service Pack 3 is Release Candidate 2, build 3300, which was released to the private beta-testing group through its connect website on February 6, 2008.

So I guess no rc3 yet.

i'm currently using build 3311 which i got through windows update. it is a lot more stable than the other previous builds. but if i was about to make a slipstreamed install i'd go with the ryans pack i will wait till sp3 goes final before using it to slipstream.

I ran both 3311 (RC2-latest) and RyanVM's 2.2.1RC1; prefer RyanVM-just my 2 cents :)

Just so you guys know, I've decided (and already announced via my newsletter) that I will be making an SP3 pack once it goes final.

As much as I would love the addition of these two, I don't think they will put IE7 in, because IE8 is rumored to be due mid to late summer this year. And I can only dream about WMP12! lol

MS WXP SP3 RC2 is very much stable right now. The problem is it has a timebomb in it. Your whole PC will stop at a certain time (about 3 months but I'm not sure the exact period).

So go for RyanVM.

When the SP3 goes final... then go for it.

when sp3 goes final it will need again! to stand for a test against sp2 with RVMuptodates
yea, right now, RVM_updatpack beats sp3 without even nodding as it runs much better then any sp3 release so far ...

personally Id prefer this pack with all the updates ,so will see then,, when sp3 goes final! i wouldn't be so surprised that rvm_pack will still prove to work better then sp3 .. in performance SP3 does boot faster from the setup
but the updated sp2 mainly with WU seems to run much nicer afterall!

its early to assume what can be done with sp2 once sp3 goes final
but for now, its going to get very hard for sp3 guys to beat rvm_updatePack and team ...

J/k ;)

Not ...
