SP3 with updates fails

Post by posttoast » Thu Apr 24, 2008 4:41 pm

I have just slipstreamed Windows XP with SP3. This worked fine. However, when I use the RVM-integrator to install addons, things go wrong. I tried different combinations of addons, but each one results in this error during the "Copying files..."-phase of Windows setup:
The file 'napclientprov.mof' on (Unknown) is needed. Type the path where the file is located, and then click OK.
I really don't know what do do with this. Using the filename in Google didn't return any hits. Does anybody here have any clue what this might be? I am using the latest version of the integrator.

You seem to be slipstreaming WMP11. Boooggy mentioned what to do when this happens. Chironz found an alternate fix for this.

Nope, this also happens when I just slipstream DirectX 9C. Or IE7. I haven't even tried WMP11 yet.

Okay, but do either of the fixes provided work for you?

Haven't tried yet. Where can I find these files so I can put them in the root of the CD, the way Chironz describes? The files aren't in de i386 folder. Should I install Windows first without addons and then get the files?

Also: I'd like to know why this happens. Does anyone have a clue?

You may need to pull the files from an existing SP3 install, as you've suggested. I don't know where they're stored on the CD. They appear to be specific to SP3.

I don't know why this happens.

OK, I took the files from another SP3 install and placed them in the root of the CD. Works fine.

Weird stuff, but I am glad that it's fixed (sort of). Thanks for the help :)

Sir, this statement is incorrect. I have confirmed reports that directX9c is *not* a part of SP3. It still must be integrated.

I am pretty sure DX9c is in SP3, if u run dx diag after SP3 install you will see, if I remember correctly DX9c confirmed as installed ??? and a huge numbers of files all with a very recent date.

From all the posts here i have deciphered , the debate is whether March 2008 updates are included or not.

No offense, according to DxDiag running on a brand new XP installation (in VMWware Workstation) that used an XP Gold VLK source slipstreamed to SP3 build 5512 and nothing else, it is running DirectX v9.0c.

Here's a screenshot:

Image

As to which month's update of 9.0c, there's some files dated 8/23/2001 but about two to three times as many are dated 4/14/2008. The results appear to be about the same if you slipstream Gold->SP2->SP3. However, if you slipstream SP3 and use a DirectX addon, the files previously dated 8/23/2001 are now dated 8/16/2004, and qasf.dll is dated 4/26/2008 instead of 4/14/2008.

Here's an excerpt from DxDiag of my Gold->SP3 installation with no DirectX addon:

OK, just so I am clear: it is no longer necessary to install the DirectX9.0C addon?

As far as Directx9.0c, I'm not sure which is correct. In the other SP3 thread, Windows XP SP3 RTM Confirmed! on April 29, 2008, there was a brief discussion on that subject.

What I posted was that after a fresh slipstreamed SP3 install, DXdiag did indeed show 9.0c as current however if I ran the dxwebsetup file it would download and install(appeared to anyway) directx updates from 2006. A 23 MB download. If I attempted this on a fairly new running system I only noticed it download the March 2008 Directx update. Only a 2.6 MB download. From that it makes it appear that almost nothing is installed with SP3 as far as DirectX even though DXdiag appears to show it current.

In the other thread "project51" seemed to think that you still needed to download or slipstream the Directx updates even after SP3. The question becomes then how accurate is the dxwebsetup utility in deciding on how much to download and/or install.

That is a very good point. It could be similar to the WU/MU issue of not showing all the updates for SP3 that there should be. At least not .NET 3.0 since we don't know for sure if IE7 updates are necessary or not.

I intend on still using a DirectX addon anyway since it updated the DirectX files that SP3 didn't.

I'm assuming it's still installing the d3dx9*.dll files from the web installer.

Because you only needed the March 2008 files. The web installer only downloaded the new files or files you don't have, instead of it downloading everything (even the files you already have) and sorting it out later.

XP Service Pack 3 is listed as supported, it wouldn't be if the runtimes were already included.

The DirectX 9c addon was never DirectX 9c. They were runtimes for DirectX 9c, updates for DirectX 9c. DX9c has been included in SP2, and is still included in SP3, and still without the runtimes.

The file 'napclientprov.mof' on (Unknown) is needed. Type the path where the file is located, and then click OK.
I really don't know what do do with this. Using the filename in Google didn't return any hits. Does anybody here have any clue what this might be? I am using the latest version of the integrator.
I can verify what the OP is seeing and the fix posted works. The fix by pointing to the WBEM folder at least. On my test I was only integrating IE7 using NR_IE7en_Addon_1.1.0.7z to a prior slipstreamed SP3. Not WMP11. This error does not occur with a basic slipstreamed SP3 install. Also using the latest RVM_Integrator 1.5.3.

In the above test install when I continued the install with the missing file once XP finished installing IE would not run. I also could not get the Quick Launch toolbar to load. Also noticed that when I tried to change the Mouse Pointers, none of the other Schemes showed up.

As far as DirectX goes it sounds like 9.0c does not include the runtimes. I will say, although I have to do some more testing, when I have tried to integrate the previous DX9 addon to a slipstreamed SP3 I get errors that I don't get with SP2. I typically add the RVMAddonsDX9_1.4.7z and get a few errors with about 6 or 7 .inf files that will not load.
