Next-Gen Integrator with BitTorrent support..!!??

Post by Siginet » Thu Aug 16, 2007 2:28 pm

Hey johnathan,
I really like your echo tracker and was hoping you may be able to modify it for my needs. I found another tracking script that was open source but was abandoned and maybe you can take a look at it and implement some of the features or code something simular. You see... I think it would be great to have a torrent tracker that other users are able to signup and submit UpdatePacks/Addons and stuff. Also this script allows the tracker to send the file directly to the server as well so that it can seed the file too. :) If this was possible it would make sharing addons and stuff so much simpler.

If it were possible I could actually implement some sort of bit torrent client into the integrator itself so there could be an online DB for UpdatePacks / Addons and so on. Where the integrator could get updated packs, download new ones, and such and such. I have allready pondered the idea for a long time. I have come up with a way to create an entire online mysql database for things and specify where to download files from through the web... but I think it would be much better to use torrents if possible. If you are wiling to I'd like to put our heads together and create the next generation of the integrator community. :)

Oh... here is that abandoned source I was talking about:

The idea of what I want to do is actually not allowed by most hosting companies. Including dreamhost. But I have written an email to dreamhost and asked them if it was ok and they replyed that we can. As long as we don't host any illegal files. :D

So if someone is knowledgable enough to help create a script (or know of an existing script) that allows web server seeding. I would love to try it.

I tried TorrentFluxx as well... but I could not get it to work. If anyone has experiance with it I would definatly like some help.

P.S. I am currently going to try TorrentFlux-B4rt. Which is a modded Torrentflux.

Great idea!
a great solution for those who have to bear the limit of sharing sites.
and also a great solution of checking popularity of each addon/updatepack.
and also a great solution of sorting addon/updatepack by time/author/genre/...

and my suggestion is to add some forced tags that describe the software usage(ex. AIO & Multi-Addon Packs / CD-DVD Applications / etc...), language (ex. english / multi-language / etc...) , whether uninstallable, etc...
this helps users a lot while finding the addons they want.

That sounds like a great idea. I'm sorry for the delay in my reply, but I will certainly give it a look tomorrow (which is now today) and write more here. :)

Glad to here from you Johnathan. :D I'll wait for your thoughts on this. I hope we can put some sort of plan together. I think it will be a great addition to the integrator.

Does xarchive/xarchiver support MS Cab files? I know it supports 7zip, which is what most people are using anyway. You can try setting up a cron job to check the files archives to make sure nobody is uploading anything naughty. Read the header of the archive, then extract the archive, then parse the necessary Integrator plain-text files to be sure it's a legitimate AddOn, and not girls_playing_twister.avi stuck in a cab file or something.

If you need any help, just let me know. I had planned on getting something like this up and running sometime in the future. I still might, but it looks like you're beating me to the punch.

Unfortunately, there's no known way to have the server act as a true peer. It's unfortunate. :(

A server can most certainly act as a true peer. I mean, it's just another computer. If you have access to a dedicated server, then you could even run a popular client like uTorrent and use its WebGUI as an API, or you could run Azureus and use a real API (though that also means you'll be relying on a Java engine to remain stable, which is something I have a difficult time with).

I think what you mean is that W/M/LAMP can't act as a true peer, which is probably accurate.

I'm quite certain that he's referring to the server acting as a peer for this specific tracker. Understand, this tracker was specifically written to not be using a native process so as to not piss off my Dreamhost overlords (technically they don't allow BT trackers due to their resource usage). AFAIK, there's no easy way to server seed without a native process. If you have a suggestion, I'm sure Jonathan would love to hear it.

Yes but... I actually got permission from dreamhost a while back. So if a good method is made... we can use it. ;)

I totally would

I totally would love to hear your idea. I don't know what the state of other web bittorrent managers are currently, but sure as I am the lonely stalker of this forum sub-category, I would be happy to continue development of Echo the Tracker.

Jonathan
