Er... well GOOGLE might help!!!!
Download the Web installer.
Open it, accept all options blahblahblah, when it sez download complete, browse to ProgramFIles\Yahoo! \Messenger\install (or something like that) and take out the installer. It installs silently with the /S switch.

I have successfully been installing Yahoo Messenger via my unattended cd for a long time. I use the following which has always worked right upto the current version 8 including Yahoo Messenger 7:

Code: Select all

ECHO.
ECHO Installing Yahoo! Messenger 8.0.0.505
ECHO Please wait...
start /wait %systemdrive%\Install\Yahoo\ymsgr8us.exe /Q

The problem with yahoo that it opens at the end of the installation...
In fact i have always worked on the /S switch never tried /Q

if anybody knows how to install yahoo silently and force it to close at the end of the installation.
Also i could never figure out how to make yahoo not to run on windows start up automatically

Okay, I've finally gotten around to trying this for myself and here's what I've learned so far:
  • The /Q switch is not completely silent. There are no prompts, but two windows will appear; one showing the decompression of files and the other stating that system settings are being configured. However, the application will not run on completion of the setup program.
  • The /S switch is completely silent, but the application will run upon completion of the setup program.
I'd go for a happy medium where it was completely silent without automatically running, but the /Q switch works well enough for me.

Does anyone know if there's a way to suppress the creation of the desktop and quicklaunch shortcuts?

i've been using this for over a year now, successfully;

Code: Select all

REG ADD %KEY%\120 /VE /D "Yahoo Messenger" /f
REG ADD %KEY%\120 /V 1 /D "%APZ%\Yahoo\ymsgr8uk.exe /S" /f
REG ADD %KEY%\120 /V 2 /D "taskkill /IM YahooMessenger.exe /F" /f

Thanks for posting your taskkill code, warrior1109. :)

I've now managed to wrap everything into a single switchless silent installer executable. Now I just need to figure out how to easily prevent those cluttering shortcuts from appearing.

Let me properly test it first, then I'll start a proper thread.

EDIT: Done. :)

I think the best way to deal with unwanted shortcuts is to have a cleanup.cmd to do exactly that.

Well, I was hoping for a switch I could use on the installer, but that may be the best I can do. Thanks for the advice. :)
